Abstract

The enclosed article, “The Monotheist Laozi” seeks to explore Laozi’s Dao De Jing through a comparative theological framework, with particular emphasis on its affinities with Islamic spirituality and Sufi metaphysics. The paper argues that Laozi’s vision was essentially monotheistic, and that later ritualistic and polytheistic interpretations were historical accretions rather than original doctrine. The study employs a comparative exegetical method, drawing on both primary Daoist sources and Qur’ānic concepts such as istighnā, taqwa, sulook, ḥaqīqah, maʿrifah, and faḍl. It also considers Indo-Islamic perspectives, particularly Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s recognition of Laozi as a prophet-like figure. The Dao De Jing presents the Dao as an absolute, ineffable source of all existence, with spiritual practice emphasizing humility, self-effacement, and alignment with its natural order—paralleling the Qur’anic notions of tawḥīd and taslīm. In governance and ethics, the Daoist sage embodies restraint, moral integrity, and intuitive action, showing that true authority and freedom arise from ego-effacement and surrender to a transcendent principle.

Abstract

Drawing on the theoretical framework of experimental phonetics, this study investigates the development of Mandarin tone acquisition among Cuban learners at beginner, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels. Through a combination of acoustic analysis and perceptual assessment, the research examines tone production and error patterns with respect to pitch range, tonal contour, and fundamental frequency movement. Data were selected from a corpus of Cuban learners of Chinese, yielding a sample of 10 representative participants: 5 beginners, 3 intermediate learners, and 2 advanced learners. Each participant read 99 monosyllabic syllables, with the neutral tone excluded. Fundamental frequency data were obtained using Praat, and four experienced raters conducted perceptual evaluations. The findings indicate a general upward trend in tonal competence as proficiency increases, with all four Mandarin tones showing relatively high accuracy overall. The relative difficulty of the tones is ordered from Tone 1 to Tone 2, Tone 4, and Tone 3, suggesting that basic tonal awareness is already present at the initial learning stage. The results further reveal that tone acquisition follows a non-linear developmental trajectory: beginner learners tend to overproduce tonal features, intermediate learners prioritise fluency over accuracy, and advanced learners demonstrate a more balanced, though not fully native-like, performance. Persistent confusion between Tone 2 and Tone 3 emerges as the most salient error type. Moreover, learners consistently exhibit lower pitch registers across levels, likely influenced by their first language. Tonal stability improves steadily with proficiency, indicating increasing control over tone production.

Abstract

This paper, based on activity theory and adopting a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews, investigated the features and influencing factors of Chinese language learning motivation among six international students learning Chinese in a local key university located in central China. Results revealed that the participants displayed a medium to high level of Chinese language learning motivation; and that their Chinese language learning motivation was influenced by five socio-cultural factors, including subject-related factors (language learning planning awareness, strategies, and interest), mediational tools (textbook difficulty and teaching facilities), rule-related factors (graduation stress and exams), learning communities (teachers and peers), and labor of division factors (teacher-student relationship, peer relationship). These findings offer implications for improving Chinese language teaching and learning efficiency to international Chinese language learners.

Abstract

By collecting 124 relevant literature on international Chinese language education research under the Belt and Road Initiative from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database over the past decade (2015–2025), this study employs a scoping review methodology and utilizes CiteSpace visualization software to analyze its current status and development trends. The findings reveal that: 1) The overall development of international Chinese language education under the Belt and Road Initiative exhibits considerable fluctuation, broadly divided into two phases—rapid development and fluctuating adjustment—with 2018 serving as a turning point. 2) Research hotspots primarily encompass four areas: innovation in the “Chinese + Specialized Subject” composite talent cultivation model, regional and country-specific Chinese language education research, the transformation and high-quality development of Confucius Institutes, and the dissemination and advancement of Chinese language education. 3) In the context of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, international Chinese language education is characterized by diverse, broad, and dynamic research trends. Analyzing the current state and developmental trends of international Chinese language education research under the “Belt and Road” framework can provide valuable insights for future studies.

Abstract

This study focuses on the adjective pairs “Zhong/Qing” in Chinese and “Mugubda/Gabyubda” in Korean, aiming to compare their adjective-noun collocational patterns based on corpus data. Starting from their basic meanings, this paper analyzes sentence structures in which these adjectives appear either as predicates or attributives. Through large-scale corpus extraction, the study categorizes the semantic extensions and syntactic functions of these collocations. Additionally, the study integrates second language acquisition theories to observe error patterns among Chinese and Korean language learners. The findings reveal notable semantic discrepancies and usage divergences between the two languages, offering valuable insights for cross-linguistic teaching and learning.

Abstract

Full-time teachers in International Chinese Language Education serve as a vital force in sustaining the development of Confucius Institutes. Research on their self-awareness can contribute to fostering teachers' professional growth. Grounded in Rogers' self-theory, this study investigates the cognitive disparities between the "real self" and the "ideal self" among 49 full-time teachers, employing narrative questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that the "real self" manifests in roles such as "mission bearers" and "challenge responders," yet is constrained by environmental pressures and career-related uncertainties. In contrast, the "ideal self" aspires to more dynamic and professional identities, such as "cultural ambassadors" and "professional mentors." This dichotomy highlights the tension between institutional expectations and teachers' self-actualization.By applying self-theory to the analysis of international Chinese language educators, this study proposes actionable strategies focusing on institutional support and teacher development. It offers both a theoretical framework and practical recommendations to enhance full-time teachers' professional identity and advance the high-quality growth of Confucius Institutes.

Abstract

International Chinese language teaching plays a pivotal role in promoting the global development of the Chinese language. Effective teaching design is essential for ensure coherent, fluent, and high-quality teaching. To provide a comprehensive overview of the development in this field, this study employs CiteSpace to conduct a visualization-based bibliometric analysis of 6,962 CNKI publications from 2003 to 2023, examining publication trends, institutional contributions, keyword clusters, and citation bursts. The findings reveal a steady increase in research output, with constructivism serving as the primary theoretical foundation. Error analysis and case-based teaching designs are widely used, with research focusing on task-based activities, classroom processes, and integrated course design. However, writing instruction and studies on non-ethnic Chinese learners, beginners, and intermediate or advanced learners remain underexplored. Micro-level research on classroom practices dominates the field, while macro-level studies on curriculum development, teaching systems, syllabus design, and digital resource development are relatively scarce. In recent years, the rise of educational technologies and new national educational initiatives has brought cultural instruction, online teaching, and the integration of ideological-political elements into the curriculum to the forefront, reflecting a shift from purely language-skill-oriented designs toward comprehensive paradigms that integrate language, culture, and values. This study provides a systematic overview of the field, identifies evolving research hotspots, and offers insights for enhancing international Chinese teaching design.
