Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of social media exposure in enhancing English vocabulary mastery among Generation Z learners. The rapid growth of digital technology has positioned social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube as prominent sources of informal language input, particularly for digitally native students. Grounded in the theory of Comprehensible Input, this research examines whether structured exposure to English-language content on social media can significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model. The participants consisted of 20 Generation Z students from the English Education Department at a regional university in Indonesia. Data were collected through a vocabulary test administered before and after a seven-day social media exposure program, as well as a questionnaire measuring students’ engagement with English-language content on social media. The data were analysed using paired sample t-test and simple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. The mean score increased from 50.75 in the pre-test to 82.25 in the post-test, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the regression analysis indicated that social media engagement had a significant positive effect on vocabulary mastery, explaining 37.8% of the variance in post-test scores (R² = 0.378, p = 0.004). These results suggest that higher levels of engagement with English-language content on social media are associated with better vocabulary outcomes. social media exposure can serve as an effective supplementary tool for enhancing English vocabulary mastery among Generation Z learners. When used purposefully, social media provides authentic, multimodal, and contextual language input that aligns with learners’ digital habits and supports vocabulary acquisition beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using Talkpal AI on improving Arabic vocabulary mastery among students at Al-Azhar Kelapa Gading Islamic High School. The background of this study is based on the low level of Arabic vocabulary mastery among students, which is caused by the use of learning media that is not interactive enough, thereby impacting students' low motivation to learn. In fact, the school has adequate supporting facilities, such as smart TVs in each classroom, which enable the application of technology-based learning media. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a nonequivalent control group design. There were 44 students participating in the study, divided into an experimental class and a control class. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and Arabic vocabulary tests. The results showed that the average posttest score of the experimental class (32.50) was higher than that of the control class (26.27). The Mann-Whitney test showed a significance value of 0.002 (< 0.05), which means that there is a significant effect of using Talkpal AI on improving students' Arabic vocabulary. Thus, Talkpal.ai is proven to be effective as an artificial intelligence-based learning medium in helping to improve students' mastery of Arabic vocabulary.

Abstract

The integration of communication processes occurs when conventional and digital communication patterns are used simultaneously, allowing communication activities to take place both face-to-face and through mediated channels. This condition has become increasingly relevant as the need for health information grows more dynamic and is obtained from diverse sources. This study aims to analyze the direct effect of information sources on learning factors and the effectiveness of health communication, the direct effect of learning factors on the effectiveness of health communication, and the indirect effect of information sources on the effectiveness of health communication through learning factors. The main concepts examined in this study include information sources, learning factors, and health communication effectiveness. This research employed an explanatory quantitative approach involving 97 students from Grade X and XI at SMA Sejahtera 1 Depok City. Data were collected through a survey using a Google Form questionnaire and analyzed using multivariate analysis. The results indicate that information sources have a direct and significant effect on both learning factors and the effectiveness of health communication. Learning factors also have a direct and significant effect on the effectiveness of health communication. However, learning factors do not mediate the relationship between information sources and health communication effectiveness. Future studies are recommended to involve a larger sample size and adopt a mixed-methods approach to allow for comparative analysis, such as multi-group analysis.

Abstract

One important effort in developing character education based on local wisdom is the rediscovery and exploration of folktales that are scattered and preserved among ethnic groups throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The Bugis ethnic group is one of the communities that possesses a rich collection of folktales. Bugis folktales are traditional literary works born from the spiritual experiences and imagination of their creators. Nevertheless, these stories have also played a significant role in shaping the life journey of the Bugis people and humanity in general. More importantly, Bugis folktales are not merely traditional literary works but also serve as a source of moral teachings. Moral values such as honesty, perseverance, obedience, mutual respect and appreciation, mutual reminder, compassion, patience, and others can be found in various folktales. These moral messages have the potential to serve as references for character formation within the Bugis community and even for national character development. This study is expected to be beneficial for both the Bugis ethnic community and Indonesian society in general, particularly in the context of character formation based on local wisdom. Revealing the meanings and values embedded in each folktale is expected to contribute significantly to the development of character education.

Abstract

Local wisdom is understood as local policy (local wisdom), local knowledge (local knowledge), or local intelligence (local genius). It may be interpreted as the product of human intellect, deep feelings, character, behavioral patterns, and moral guidance aimed at achieving human dignity. Mastery of local wisdom elevates individuals toward noble character. The concept of local wisdom held by the Selayar community is partially implemented in dideq oral texts. These concepts need to be documented, revitalized, and disseminated so that they continue to live within the community to which they belong and become part of individual character formation not only for the Selayar people, but also for the wider community of South Sulawesi and Indonesian society in general. This study aims to reveal concepts of local wisdom, particularly the attitudes of sipakatau, sipakaingaq, and sipakalabbiriq found in dideqoral literature. The primary data were collected through field research using recording, interviews, transliteration, and translation techniques. Data analysis was conducted based on Roland Barthes’ concepts of denotative and connotative meaning. The results of the study indicate that sipakatau and sipakalabbiriq are two inseparable values. Mutual respect and mutual appreciation coexist and strongly characterize the life of the Selayar community, as clearly reflected in dideq texts. Meanwhile, sipakaingaq represents an attitude of mutual reminder among community members, manifested in behavior, speech, and religious observance.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ understanding of the Makassar local language among eighth-grade students at SMP Telkom Makassar. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of seven Grade VIII classes involving 183 students. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test administered before and after the instructional intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively and using normalized gain (g) based on Hake’s formula. The results show that the average pre-test scores ranged from 35.58 to 43.27 and increased to 62.24–83.52 in the post-test. The g-Hake analysis indicates that six classes achieved a medium improvement category (g = 0.342–0.557), while one class reached a high category (g = 0.734), with an overall weighted g of 0.513. These findings indicate that Makassar language instruction is effective in improving students’ understanding and has potential to strengthen linguistic competence and preserve local culture in schools.
