Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of the constructivism approach in language learning by connecting Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development with modern educational practices. Constructivism theory emphasizes that learning is an active process in which students build knowledge through experience and interaction with the environment. In the context of language learning, this approach is considered relevant to increase student engagement and support more meaningful learning. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Participants consisted of 10 teachers and 20 students who were selected by purposive sampling based on their experience in applying constructivist learning methods. The results show that the constructivism approach can increase students' active participation, improve critical thinking skills, and provide a more contextual and relevant language learning experience. Teachers who apply Piaget's principles, such as experiential learning, reflection, and collaboration, report increased student learning motivation. However, challenges in implementing this method include time constraints, a rigorous curriculum, and a lack of support resources for project-based learning. The study concludes that although constructivist approaches have great potential in language learning, further support is needed in terms of curriculum flexibility and resources. Recommendations for educators include increased use of technology and project-based teaching strategies to support more interactive and participatory language learning.

This study is a R&D (Research and Development) approach using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The book that had been developed was implemented in the English learning process at the class XI of Tourism Vocational High School Dompu, Department of Travel and Tourism Business with a total of 27 students, in academic year 2024. The validity test results of the developed book obtained from media expert is 88% (very valid) and 92% (very valid) from material expert. Moreover, the practicality test result from students and teacher was at the level “practical” with average score 3,8 or 76%. Lastly, based on students’ speaking test result, the average total score obtained by 27 students is 77. On other word, 100% students or all 27 students obtained average scores more than or equal to 70. It means all students have successfully done the task with good scores. Based on that, the use of English for tourism book based on tourism places in Dompu is effective to improve students’ speaking skill. Another remarkable finding in this reseach is that both teacher and students strongly agree that the material in book is able to stimulate students to be active in the learning process.

Abstract

This study analyzes the difficulties faced by EFL students in learning English phonology and phonetics at the English Department of Victory University of Sorong. The research involved 46 participants from the 5th and 7th semesters who had completed the English phonology and phonetics course. The findings reveal that students encounter significant challenges due to various factors, including interference from their first language (L1), inconsistencies in English spelling and pronunciation, and limited exposure to authentic speech and diverse accents. Additionally, cognitive constraints such as processing limitations and insufficient phonological working memory further hinder their ability to apply phonological theory in real-world communication. The lack of focused phonological training in the curriculum, combined with psychological barriers like pronunciation anxiety, also contributes to the students’ struggles. These findings highlight the need for enhanced phonological instruction, increased exposure to varied spoken English, and strategies to build student confidence, which are essential for overcoming the difficulties in mastering English phonology and phonetics.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the teaching methods employed by lecturers to enhance speaking skills among university students in Karawang. Mastery of speaking skills in a foreign language is crucial for students, not only for academic success but also for professional development in the future. Despite its importance, teaching speaking skills often faces challenges, such as determining the most effective methods to improve students' speaking abilities. This research adopts a qualitative approach using narrative inquiry to explore various teaching methods utilized by lecturers and the perceptions of students towards these methods. Data were collected through interviews and classroom observations involving five randomly selected students who have participated in speaking courses. The findings indicate that teaching methods incorporating active interaction, constructive feedback, and the use of technology significantly enhance students' speaking skills. Students responded positively to more interactive and technology-based methods, which allowed them to practice speaking in contexts closer to real-life situations. The study also revealed that students' confidence in public speaking increased when supported by a positive learning environment and inclusive teaching methods. This research provides valuable insights for educators in developing more effective teaching strategies to improve students' speaking abilities. Therefore, the findings from this study are expected to contribute to the development of better curricula and more innovative teaching programs in higher education.
