Abstract

The Siamese catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) is a strategic freshwater commodity in Indonesian aquaculture; however, its growth performance in the field is often hampered by low feed conversion efficiency and water quality issues in intensive farming systems. This article presents a literature review on the potential of the commercial probiotic Raja Lele a product based on a consortium of Lactobacillus sp., Acetobacter sp., and yeast that has long been widely used in catfish (Clarias sp.) farming for application in Siamese catfish grow-out.  This review found that supplementation with probiotics comprising lactic acid bacteria and fermentative bacteria consistently improved specific growth rates, feed conversion efficiency, survival rates, and water quality in Siamese catfish rearing systems. Direct evidence from Siamese catfish was combined with cross-evidence from the application of the Raja Lele probiotic in Sangkuriang catfish, which showed comparable patterns of growth enhancement and immune response. This study concludes that the Raja Lele probiotic has the potential to be adapted as a functional feed supplement in Siamese catfish aquaculture, with the caveat that the dosage and frequency of application still need to be specifically tested for this species.

Abstract

Pangasius (Pangasius sp.) is a leading freshwater fishery commodity in Indonesia, but its success is greatly influenced by stocking density, especially in confined spaces. High stocking density can lead to competition for space and food, thereby triggering aggressive behavior and cannibalism among individuals. This study aimed to examine the effect of placing patin fish in small tanks on the occurrence of cannibalistic behavior. Observations were conducted on ten patin fish reared together in a single 18-liter bucket for seven days, at a stocking density of approximately 0.56 fish per liter of air. Visual observations were conducted periodically to identify the presence of wounds, fin or tail damage, and indications of aggressive behavior among the fish. The data obtained were descriptive and qualitative. The results of the observations showed that one smaller fish suffered complete loss of its tail after being preyed upon by another individual and subsequently died, while the other nine fish showed no injuries. The survival rate was 90%, with a cannibalism index of 10%. This case falls under Type A cannibalism, which refers to death resulting from the loss of vital body parts necessary for movement. These findings indicate that the primary trigger for cannibalism is not just overall stocking density, but rather the striking differences in body size among individuals within a single tank. Therefore, standardizing fry size and adjusting the number of fish to the tank volume should be a top priority in small-scale catfish farming to reduce the risk of cannibalism and improve fish survival.

Abstract

Feed management is one of the most important factors determining the success of aquaculture, particularly in the culture of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). Excessive feeding (overfeeding) is still commonly practiced because farmers assume that providing more feed will accelerate fish growth. In fact, uneaten feed accumulates as organic waste, reducing water quality and increasing fish mortality. This article aims to explain the effects of overfeeding on water quality, fish growth, and survival based on literature studies. The discussion covers fish nutritional requirements, water quality deterioration due to feed waste, physiological responses of fish to poor water quality, and the utilization of fish waste as an alternative feed ingredient. The study indicates that excessive feeding increases ammonia concentration, decreases dissolved oxygen, reduces feed efficiency, suppresses fish growth, and ultimately increases mortality. Therefore, proper feeding management combined with good water quality management is essential to achieve sustainable striped catfish aquaculture..

Abstract

Feed is the main factor that determines the success of fish farming because it affects growth, health, and production efficiency. The application of the concept of balanced nutrition in feed formulation is important to meet the nutritional needs of fish according to their species and growth phases. This article aims to examine the concept of balanced nutrition in the formulation of farmed fish feed through a literature review method with a descriptive approach. The literature is obtained from national and international scientific articles published in 2021–2025 through Google Scholar, Open Journal System (OJS), ScienceDirect, and Crossref. The results of the study show that the balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, and essential fatty acids plays an important role in increasing growth, feed utilization efficiency, immune system, and fish survival. In addition, the use of alternative feed ingredients based on agricultural waste, fishery by-products, and aquatic plants has the potential to reduce production costs if formulated according to the nutritional needs of fish. The application of the concept of balanced nutrition supported by the use of local raw materials is an important strategy in increasing the productivity and sustainability of fish farming.

Abstract

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most economically important freshwater aquaculture commodities in Indonesia. In aquaculture production, feed accounts for the largest proportion of production costs, representing approximately 60–70% of the total operational expenses. Therefore, improving feed efficiency without compromising fish growth performance has become a major concern in tilapia farming. This article aims to analyze the efficiency of commercial feed and formulated feed on the growth performance of Nile tilapia based on findings from previous studies. The study employed a literature review method by examining national and international scientific publications related to fish growth, feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency, and survival rate. The review indicates that commercial feed generally provides consistent growth performance due to its balanced and standardized nutritional composition, whereas properly formulated feed can achieve comparable growth when prepared with appropriate ingredient proportions and nutritional balance. In addition, the use of formulated feed has the potential to reduce production costs, making it a more economical alternative for fish farmers while maintaining satisfactory growth performance.

Abstract

Water quality is one of the main factors that determine the success of catfish cultivation, especially in the seed phase which is still vulnerable to environmental changes. This study aims to analyze the effect of water change frequency on the growth of catfish (Clarias sp.). The study used an experimental method with four treatments, namely no water change (P0), water change once per week (P1), twice per week (P2), and three times per week (P3). The observed parameters included an increase in the weight and length of catfish fry. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and followed by the Duncan test at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the frequency of water change had a real effect (p<0.05) on the growth of catfish flies. The P3 treatment produced the best growth with an average weight gain of 9.30 g and an increase in length of 6.20 cm. More frequent water changes are able to maintain water quality, reduce ammonia accumulation, and increase the availability of dissolved oxygen so that the metabolic process and nutrient utilization take place more optimally. Thus, regular water change is one of the effective water quality management strategies to increase the growth of catfish seeds.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of substituting fish meal with black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) maggot meal in artificial feed on the growth and survival rate of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications, namely P0 (0% substitution), P1 (25% substitution), P2 (50% substitution), and P3 (75% substitution) over a 40-day rearing period. The parameters observed included absolute weight growth, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), and water quality. The results showed that treatment P1 (25% substitution) produced the highest absolute weight growth of 24.77 grams with an SGR of 4.42%/day, the lowest FCR of 1.10, and the highest survival rate of 95.6%, which was not significantly different from the control (P0). In contrast, increasing substitution up to 75% (P3) tended to decrease growth performance and survival rate due to the high fat and crude fiber content of BSF maggot meal. Based on these results, it can be concluded that BSF maggot meal can replace fish meal up to a level of 25% without decreasing the growth performance and survival rate of catfish.

Abstract

Intensification of marine fish farming (mariculture) is often faced with the threat of bacterial infectious diseases, especially vibriosis and streptococcosis, which result in high mortality rates and significant economic losses. The conventional use of synthetic antibiotics has triggered antimicrobial resistance (AMR), residue accumulation in export commodities, and damage to marine ecosystems. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of natural ingredients as alternative antimicrobial agents in the treatment of marine fish through a systematic literature review approach. The natural ingredients studied include plant extracts (mangrove leaves Rhizophora apiculata and ketapang leaves Terminalia catappa), essential oils (cloves Syzygium aromaticum and lemongrass Cymbopogon citratus), and bioactive compounds of propolis. The results of the review indicate that mangrove and ketapang leaf extracts have strong inhibitory power in vitro against Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and are able to increase the survival rate of grouper and white snapper up to >85% in vivo. Clove and lemongrass essential oils exhibit very low Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values ​​(50-75 µg/mL) while also functioning as natural sedatives and stress-reducing agents.

Abstract

Giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy) is a freshwater aquaculture commodity of high economic value, yet its growth rate is relatively slow and the cost of fishmeal-based feed continues to rise. Microalgae such as Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris are known to contain high levels of protein, pigments, and bioactive compounds, making them a potential alternative nutrition supplement in giant gourami feed. This review was compiled using the literature review method, aiming to examine and summarize research findings on the effect of microalgae supplementation on the growth, body composition, and immune response of giant gourami. The results show that supplementation of Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris at a certain dose (around 6 g/kg feed) can improve growth, body composition, and the non-specific immune response of giant gourami. However, the optimal dose, microalgae processing method, and economic feasibility of its use at commercial aquaculture scale still require further research.

Abstract

Vitamins and minerals are essential micronutrients that play an important role in improving the health and productivity of farmed fish. This study aims to examine the role of vitamins and minerals in growth, immune system, feed efficiency, and fish resistance based on the results of research in the last five years. The method used is a literature study by collecting and analyzing scientific articles from Google Scholar, Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, DOAJ, and Garuda. The analysis was carried out through literature selection, identification of key information, comparison of research results, and descriptive synthesis. The results of the study show that vitamins play a role in metabolism, growth, reproduction, antioxidant activity, and increased immune response, while minerals function in bone formation, enzyme activity, energy metabolism, blood formation, and osmoregulation. Proper vitamin and mineral supplementation has been proven to improve feed efficiency, growth rate, disease resistance, and fish survival rate. However, the effectiveness of supplementation is influenced by fish species, dosage, feed formulation, and environmental conditions of the farm. Therefore, the preparation of balanced feed is an important strategy to support the sustainability and productivity of aquaculture.
