Abstract

This article explores the intersection of cultural identity, sustainability, and design in Asia-Pacific. As globalization influences contemporary design, the challenge for designers lies in preserving local traditions while embracing global trends. The cultural heritage of the Asia-Pacific, deeply rooted in historical, religious, and social contexts, shapes artistic and design practices that reflect the unique values of the region. However, environmental crises such as rising sea levels, deforestation, and pollution necessitate the adoption of eco-friendly solutions in design. This article examines how designers can address these pressing environmental issues through sustainable architecture, green urban planning, and ethical product design while maintaining a strong cultural identity. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the importance of collaboration among universities and institutions across the region to foster sustainable design education and community-driven solutions. By engaging with global and local perspectives, designers can create innovative works contributing to cultural resilience and environmental sustainability. The concept of Kala Manawa Kalpa, which emphasizes the cyclical relationship between time, culture, and nature, provides a guiding framework for integrating traditional wisdom with modern design practices. Ultimately, this article argues for a harmonious convergence of culture, sustainability, and design, offering pathways for the Asia-Pacific region to navigate the challenges of the 21st century while preserving its rich cultural legacy. Through such an approach, design can play a pivotal role in shaping the region's sustainable and culturally vibrant future.

Abstract

Abstract

Pramoedya Ananta Toer is the most influential literary figure in modern Indonesian literature, with over 50 outstanding literary works that have had a profound impact not only on Indonesian literature but also on the world literary stage. Pramoedya's two visits to China during the 1950s facilitated substantive exchanges with prominent Chinese writers. Pramoedya assimilated conceptual frameworks from China's developmental experience into his intellectual praxis. Simultaneously, engagement with Chinese literary works significantly expanded his creative horizons. Chinese academia has initiated translations of Pramoedya's works as early as the mid-20th century, subsequently developing dedicated research trajectories. This study traces his intellectual engagements in China, examines the historical evolution of Chinese scholarship on his literary works, and analyzes distinctive aspects of Pramoedya studies within China's academic paradigm.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores the complex relationship between language and culture in Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind), a novel by Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Set during the Dutch colonial period in the early 20th century, the novel presents a multilingual environment where Dutch, Malay, and Javanese languages interact within a socially stratified society. The central research problem addressed is how language operates as both a tool of colonial control and a medium for cultural resistance and identity formation. Through the lens of critical sociolinguistics and postcolonial cultural theory, this study examines how linguistic practices in the novel reflect broader power dynamics, colonial ideologies, and cultural negotiations. The protagonist, Minke, embodies a linguistic and cultural hybrid, navigating between colonial education in Dutch and his native cultural roots expressed in Malay and Javanese. His linguistic choices mirror his shifting identity, revealing a deeper tension between imposed authority and indigenous self-determination. Pramoedya’s strategic use of multilingual narration is interpreted as a form of subversive storytelling that challenges the dominance of the colonial language while asserting the significance of native cultural perspectives. The novelty of this research lies in its interdisciplinary focus on how literature can function as a site of linguistic resistance and cultural recovery in the face of colonial hegemony. By analyzing the novel’s language politics, this paper contributes to broader discussions on the role of language in postcolonial identity formation and the intersection between linguistic power and cultural expression in Southeast Asian literature.

Abstract

This article compares expressions of Indonesian cultural nationalism through two figures from distinct creative mediums: Pramoedya Ananta Toer in literature and I Nyoman Ngendon in the visual arts. Pramoedya, through his novel This Earth of Mankind and his steadfast resolve in voicing social injustice, and Ngendon, through paintings that parallel his role as a guerrilla fighter, both reflect the spirit of social realism amid colonial repression. Their creative practices function as acts of resistance, awakening national consciousness and articulating collective values rooted in the zeitgeist of their time. Drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics, this analysis examines the relationship between narrative, biographical experience, and symbolic representation embedded in their works. The study adopts a framework grounded in the physics concept of distance of closest approach, emphasizing a nuanced reading of the proximity between artwork, social history, and the creative dynamics of both figures. Nationalism and the spirit of nationhood are thus not understood as abstract ideas alone, but as lived, internalized, and embodied experiences manifested through artistic forms within distinct social spheres.

Abstract

Architecture and interior design not only represent aesthetic and functional aspects, but also act as tools for constructing identity, power, and social class. This study analyzes Nyai Ontosoroh's house in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel Bumi Manusia as a representation of social class ambiguity and spatial symbolism in the colonial context of the Dutch East Indies. Through an interdisciplinary approach between literary studies, architecture, and postcolonial theory, this paper explores how the physical form of the house, the division of space, and interior elements become a means of resistance against colonial and patriarchal social structures. Nyai's Indisch-style house, complete with a garden, a carpeted attic, a spacious living room, and a luxurious bathroom, not only reflects high social status, but also becomes an arena for negotiating gender and racial identities. The results of the analysis show that the domestic space in this novel is a "narrative architecture" that contains political and cultural meanings, and reflects a complex and ambivalent colonial reality. This study contributes to the discourse on decolonizing architecture and the importance of reading space as a social text.

Abstract

This paper Pramoedya Ananta Toer, a major literary figure in Indonesia, has made significant contributions to the Malay literary world through works that champion social justice, nationalism, and historical consciousness. In Malaysia, his works have found a place in educational and academic domains despite being banned or rejected in his home country during the New Order regime. This study traces the reception history of Pramoedya’s works in Malaysia, identifies the ideological factors shaping this acceptance, and analyses how he has been appreciated by Malaysian scholars. Using a qualitative approach combining in-depth interviews, textual analysis, and documentary research, this article argues that Pramoedya’s contributions are valued not merely through the lens of political controversy, but from perspectives of humanism, postcolonial values, and regional literary solidarity within the Malay world.

Abstract

Pramoedya Ananta Toer is widely known for his humanitarian narratives that place human beings at the center of values. This idea finds its relevance in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Bali, which is rich in traditions and a value-based social structure. Although both reflect humanitarian values, there is still limited research linking Pramoedya’s humanism with the cultural practices of indigenous communities such as those in Tenganan. The results of this study reveal three key points. First, there is a connection between Pramoedya’s narrative and the social practices in Tenganan, reflecting the relationship between ideas and the implementation of values. Second, the respect given to traditional leaders is based on their social responsibility, not merely their status. Third, the traditional structure in Tenganan demonstrates collective humanitarian values through mutual cooperation (gotong royong). These findings affirm that Pramoedya’s humanistic values are not only alive in literary works but also manifested within contextual local cultural practices.
