Abstract

Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s literary works serve as both a historical testimony and a defiant act of resistance against state repression in Indonesia. This study examines Pramoedya’s contributions to literature and human rights, highlighting how his works have shaped discourse on freedom of speech and democratic principles in Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, this paper analyzes his writings alongside historical and legal developments concerning free expression. Despite Indonesia’s democratic progress, defamation and blasphemy laws remain tools of suppression, echoing past restrictions. Through comparative analysis, this study underscores the enduring relevance of Pramoedya’s literary resistance in advocating for unrestricted intellectual freedom. Safeguarding free speech is not merely a legal obligation but a fundamental commitment to truth and justice, ensuring that voices like Pramoedya’s are never silenced again.

Abstract

This work serves as a visual expression rooted in deep concern over environmental exploitation and the ongoing degradation of marine ecosystems. Through a sustainable fashion approach, this couture garment is crafted using post-consumer materials such as discarded denim, damaged compact discs, and plastic bottles, serving as a critical response to the consumerist culture that negatively impacts nature. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing the stages of exploration, experimentation, and formation as outlined by Alma M. Hawkins. It also incorporates the humanistic philosophy of Pramoedya Ananta Toer as a cultural lens to frame the narrative. The creative process reveals that fashion design can be a powerful medium for ecological critique, offering an alternative narrative that fosters collective environmental awareness. This work affirms that fashion is not merely about visual aesthetics, but also a space of resistance—one that advocates for humanity and sustainability.

Abstract

This paper explores subaltern representation and digital solidarity, connecting literary resistance in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s works with contemporary digital expressions, exemplified by Band Sukatani’s protest song. It addresses how Pramoedya’s narratives of subaltern struggles resonate in modern digital contexts. Utilizing textual analysis of selected Pramoedya novels, content analysis of Sukatani’s lyrics, and online discourse analysis, this study applies theories from subaltern studies, nationalism and identity, and digital affect to examine persistent issues of censorship, institutional oppression, and mobilization of digital solidarity. Findings demonstrate continuity in forms of resistance from literary to musical and digital platforms, highlighting the enduring relevance of Pramoedya’s works and contemporary activism through digital media. The study concludes that subaltern resistance remains dynamic and robust, reinforced by digital cultural expressions that sustain and amplify the legacy of Pramoedya Ananta Toer.

Abstract

This article examines how mise-en-scène functions as a cinematic narrative device in The Earth of Mankind (Bumi Manusia, 2019), directed by Hanung Bramantyo and adapted from Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s seminal novel. Set in the Dutch East Indies during the early 20th century, the film visually constructs themes of colonial tension and postcolonial identity through its use of setting, costume, lighting, color, and spatial composition. By analyzing key scenes, this study reveals how mise-en-scène not only reflects the socio-political conditions of the colonial era but also shapes the viewer’s understanding of character psychology and resistance, particularly through the protagonist Minke’s transformation. The visual contrasts between European and native spaces, as well as symbolic props and body language, contribute to a layered narrative that transcends dialogue. This article argues that mise-en-scène in Bumi Manusia is integral to the storytelling process, serving as a visual language for articulating Indonesia’s colonial history and national consciousness.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of patriarchy in 13th-century Javanese feudal society through an analysis of Arok Dedes by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The research centers on the character of Dedes, symbolizing gender oppression. Although Dedes holds the high position of queen, she remains constrained by the patriarchal system, positioning her as a tool of male authority. This dynamic is evident in her forced marriage to Tunggul Ametung and her political involvement with Arok. Utilizing both sociological and historical perspectives, the research reveals the ways in which the patriarchal structure, understood within its historical context, shapes the social and political positioning of women. Additionally, the study incorporates hypergamy theory, demonstrating that Dedes' marriage was not merely a personal decision but a strategic political maneuver reinforcing male dominance. The findings offer valuable insights into the continued influence of patriarchy in modern society, encouraging discussions on women's empowerment and the pursuit of gender equality. Ultimately, this study contributes significantly to feminist theory and power studies, offering a fresh perspective on the portrayal of women in Indonesian history and literature.

Abstract

Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s literary works expose histories of oppression, resistance, and national identity, giving voice to those silenced by colonialism and authoritarianism. While his influence on literature is widely acknowledged, its intersection with contemporary visual art remains underexplored. This article examines how text-based artistic practices reinterpret and extend Pramoedya’s legacy, using layering, erasure, and fragmentation as visual metaphors for censorship and resilience. Drawing on cognitive theory, expression theory, and visual semiotics, the artistic process integrates his words into images of painting and mixed media to create a dialogue between past and present, literature and image, memory and erasure. The findings reveal that visualizing literary narratives deepens historical reflection and challenges cultural amnesia. This study contributes to both artistic and academic discourse by showing how contemporary art can reclaim silenced histories and expand Pramoedya’s influence beyond literature into the realm of visual expression.

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses about Senandung tak Bertahta exhibition which departs from the situation and conditions of Balinese society in the frame of socialist realism Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Balinese society is still struggling to meet their living needs behind the glittering tourism sector. Take for example the Kerobokan area of Bali which is always under pressure with the rate of growth, between struggling, surviving, actually giving up, especially on the issue of land which is squeezed and lured by investors' enticements. The data source was obtained through a qualitative approach using a descriptive analysis method by utilizing library media. The Senandung tak Bertahta exhibition is a representative to voice the phenomenon, through three works that represent the voices of the buried community, the context of body ownership and the issue of fake identity. The Senandung tak bertahta exhibition will be studied using the theory of Socialist Realism which is in line with Pramoedya's thoughts and the works will be studied using theories by Adorno, Foucault and Julia Kristeva which describe the problem of the helplessness of society which is in line with the context of socialist realism. By studying symbolic elements, visual composition, and social context, this exhibition shows how contemporary art is still relevant as a medium for the struggle of lower-class discourse, as proposed in Pramoedya's literature.

Abstract

This study represents literary characters in contemporary ethnic fashion design, emphasizing the character of Nyai Ontosoroh from Pramoedya Ananta Toer's novel Bumi Manusia. Nyai Ontosoroh was chosen to represent a strong, intelligent indigenous woman who resists colonialism and patriarchy. The purpose of this research is to interpret Nyai's character values into visual clothing forms through a descriptive qualitative approach with textual narrative analysis. Values such as assertiveness, independence, and courage are translated into clothing design silhouettes, the selection of sekar jagad batik motifs, and symbolic color combinations. The influence of 19th-century European fashion is implemented through the distinctive silhouette of the kebaya kutubaru, reflecting Nyai's character as a traditional woman with progressive ideas. This research also applies the principles of narrative fashion, which uses clothing as a medium for conveying stories and cultural values. This paper reveals that clothing design can serve as an effective visual medium for expressing literary narratives and cultural identity. The representation of Nyai Ontosoroh's character through design not only produces aesthetic works but also expands reflective, contextual design practices rooted in local values. This research contributes to the development of an interdisciplinary approach between fashion, literature, and cultural studies in Indonesia's creative sector.
