Abstract

Coffeehouse (Qahveh-Khaneh) painting, a vibrant Iranian folk art form flourishing during the Qajar era (18th-20th centuries), has been primarily studied through its aesthetic or sociological aspects. This research uniquely investigates its multimedia nature, revealing a dynamic interplay with the oral storytelling tradition of Naqqali and the theatrical performances of Ta'zieh. To analyze the historical development, artistic characteristics, social functions, and cultural impact of Coffeehouse painting within the Iranian context, highlighting its multimedia character and its relationship with Naqqali and Ta'zieh. A qualitative thematic analysis of existing scholarly literature, predominantly in Persian, was conducted. Sources were reviewed, translated, and analyzed to identify recurring themes and patterns. Coffeehouse paintings served as a powerful medium for disseminating religious beliefs, shaping national identity, and bolstering morale during a period of colonial influence. The art form's visual conventions and narrative strategies were deeply intertwined with Naqqali and Ta'zieh traditions. This study reveals Coffeehousepain ting as a significant force in shaping Iranian cultural identity and underscores the importance of studying multimedia art forms within their specific socio-historical contexts.

Abstract

Digital technology has significantly transformed the concepts and practices of art, including the creation of art and design. Cinesonic emerged as an innovative form that integrates the visual and the aural into a unified and holistic aesthetic through multisensory experiences. Consequently, it has fostered extensive artistic expression, depth and diversity of meaning, and the emergence of new paradigms in contemporary culture. This study aims to describe cinesonic as a medium for the recreation of art and culture while simultaneously fostering visual-aural awareness in everyday human activities, which are often overlooked. The development of visual-aural awareness has the potential to enhance the depth and quality of audience appreciation. This research is qualitative, employing a descriptive-analytical method. A historical explanation approach is utilized to guide the description within spatial and temporal boundaries. Data were collected from prior papers and works discussing the cinesonic movement and its realities in art and design. The paper focuses on examining the definition, history, and application of the cinesonic concept across various contexts. The findings reveal that cinesonic expands the boundaries of traditional aesthetics, offers sharp social critique, and creates multisensory interactions that are highly relevant to the digital era. At an advanced stage, cinesonic is anticipated to become an art form capable of enhancing artistic experiences, fostering awareness, and shaping new insights into the relationships between humans, technology, and their environments.

Abstract

Gamelan Mandolin is a type of traditional Balinese music that is played by plucking. The Mandolin gamelan, which is thought to have originated from China, is still preserved by the people of Pupuan Village, Tabanan. One form of application of creativity and innovation in the world of music is in the development of the mandolin gamelan. Gamelan mandolin is a form of musical experiment that combines Balinese gamelan instruments with the mandolin, a musical instrument originating from China. In the creation process, the mandolin gamelan presents new challenges in terms of playing techniques, harmony and timbre which are different from gamelan in general. This article aims to examine the creativity of musicians in designing and processing gamelan mandolin instruments, as well as how these innovations have had an impact on the development of traditional and contemporary Balinese music. Using a composition and performance analysis approach, this research shows that the mandolin gamelan is not just a musical experiment, but also a means of enriching the Indonesian musical repertoire through mixing different cultural elements. Through creativity and innovation in the development of the mandolin gamelan, space is created for the evolution of traditional music that remains relevant amidst global musical developments.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the significant changes in Balinese shadow puppetry (wayang) resulting from the integration of technology in the global era. While the introduction of technology has opened new opportunities for the development of Balinese wayang, there are concerns that its use may undermine traditional values, affect the creativity of the puppeteers, and potentially threaten the preservation of this art form. Based on this, the study poses two main research questions: (1) How does technology influence the creativity of Balinese wayang in the global era? and (2) What are the impacts on the preservation and advancement of Balinese wayang? This qualitative research employs data collection methods such as observation, interviews, and literature review. The data were analyzed descriptively and interpretively, supported by creativity theory. The results indicate that technology has stimulated boundless innovation in Balinese wayang, leading to more engaging audio-visual performances. Moreover, the use of technology has contributed to the resurgence of the wayang-watching culture in Balinese society, while supporting the sustainability of this art form in the global era.

Abstract

This paper explores the role of music education in upholding children’s dignity within the context of Japan's evolving demographic and multicultural landscape. Japan faces a rapid population decline, prompting an increased reliance on foreign workers and their families. This demographic shift introduces challenges for children of foreign descent who often navigate between their native language and Japanese in educational settings. The paper examines the ethical responsibilities of music educators in fostering inclusivity and addressing cultural dilemmas. It emphasizes that music, as a social and ethical practice, significantly influences children's psychological, social, and intellectual development. The discussion highlights the need for curricula that respect diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, proposing innovative approaches such as intercultural music workshops. These workshops enable foreign and Japanese children to engage in mutual learning by sharing traditional songs from various countries. The paper also underscores the importance of community-based initiatives and crowdfunding in supporting such educational endeavors. By prioritizing the dignity and holistic development of all children, this study advocates for a transformative approach to music education that reflects the values of a multicultural society. The findings contribute to global discussions on inclusive education and the ethical responsibilities of educators in diverse communities.

Abstract

Pucuk Bang, or Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis, was established as the identity and mascot of Bangli Regency during the leadership of Regent I.B. Gede Agung Ladip (1990–1995, 1995–2000) and officially declared on Bangli's 771st anniversary on May 10, 1991. Regent Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta (2021–2026) aimed to revive Bangli's taksu through the creation of the Pucuk Bang Dance as a visual icon, communication medium, identity symbol, and representation of Bangli’s vision and mission, fostering emotional connections and broad acceptance. The Pucuk Bang flower embodies purity, love, sincerity, and courage. "Pucuk" symbolizes the peak or forefront, and "Bang" (red) represents bravery, spirit, and the deity Brahma, a manifestation of God. It reflects courage and rising to the top with purity, love, and sincerity. The Pucuk Bang concept was transformed into a creative work integrating music, dance, and technology, deeply exploring textures, shapes, colors, and meanings. Inspired by Bangli’s heritage, such as Baris dances and Gong Gede gamelans, it uses the Tri Angga structure (kawitan, pangawak, pangecet). The musical work is united by nine dancers symbolizing the Universe's greatness as Sarining Padma Bhuwana. The Pucuk Bang flower embodies purity, love, sincerity, and courage. Abstract

This research examines the influence of Chinese cultural values on the development of Balinese painting, focusing on how cultural interactions have enriched its artistic identity. Using qualitative methods with a historical approach and visual analysis, the study identifies Chinese cultural elements such as Yin-Yang philosophy, cosmology, motifs like Nekara Pejeng, Chinese coins, dragons, and decorative techniques integrated into Balinese art. The findings reveal that these influences are most evident in the styles of Kamasan painting, where forms, colors, and decorative motifs reflect a process of acculturation. Balinese artists have successfully incorporated these Chinese elements into their works while preserving their cultural identity. This research highlights the importance of cultural exchange as a driving force in the evolution of Balinese painting, offering both academic and practical contributions to the understanding of how cross-cultural interactions can enhance artistic traditions.
