Abstract

The crisis of transcendental values in modern society reflects a tendency to reduce the spiritual-substantive dimension into formal symbolism lacking transformative social power. This condition reveals an imbalance between individual piety and social praxis, as well as the limitations of normative-doctrinal approaches in Islamic Studies, Theology, Philosophy, and Sufism. The research gap lies in the absence of an integrative model capable of operationalizing transcendental values as a methodological foundation for social transformation, particularly within a counseling framework. This study employs a qualitative-conceptual method based on literature review, critical analysis, and philosophical hermeneutics. It integrates the epistemology of transcendental values (tawhid, ihsan, tazkiyatun nafs) with the prophetic paradigm (humanization, liberation, transcendence) within an emancipatory counseling approach. The study argues that transcendental values must be reconstructed both epistemologically and methodologically to function as spiritual and moral capital for just social change. Furthermore, the reinterpretation of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar as a dialogical and transformative counseling process becomes key to bridging the gap between spirituality and social reality. This research contributes by proposing a prophetic-emancipatory counseling paradigm to strengthen social ethics in contemporary society.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of constitutional thought in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh siyasah), focusing on the normative foundations of the Qur'an and Hadith, the position of revelation and reason in Islam, and Ibn Taymiyyah's construction of the relationship between religion and the state. This research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that Islamic constitutional thought is grounded in the principles of tawhid, justice, trust (amanah), consultation (shura), and leadership accountability. Revelation functions as the supreme source of authority, while reason serves as an instrument of ijtihad. Constitutional matters belong to the sphere of ijtihadiyah, open to dynamic thinking and contextualization. Ibn Taymiyyah's thought affirms the integral relationship between religion and state through the realistic and contextual concept of siyasah shar'iyyah, remaining relevant to contemporary constitutional discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between levels of public political engagement and the classification of political parties within a democratic framework. This study examines how the ideology, social base, and policy orientation of political parties can influence the level of citizens’ engagement in the political process. The methodology employed is qualitative, utilising a literature review that analyses various scientific sources, documents, and relevant literature to achieve a comprehensive understanding. The research findings indicate that political parties characterised by a clear ideological identity, a robust organisational structure, and openness to public aspirations are more likely to enhance citizens’ political engagement. Conversely, parties that lack transparency regarding their actions and fail to consistently fulfil their promises may erode public trust and participation. Furthermore, it was found that political education and access to information are key drivers in boosting public participation. This research enriches the field of political science, particularly regarding the strategic role of political parties in facilitating democratic participation. In practice, these findings can assist policymakers in formulating strategies to strengthen democracy by bolstering political parties and empowering the public in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

The Rearticulation of Amar Ma’ruf Nahi Munkar as Emancipatory Social Counseling: Toward a Transformative Anti-Oppression Theology. This article examines the rearticulation of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar as an emancipatory social counseling paradigm grounded in transformative anti-oppression theology. The study is motivated by the tendency to interpret amar ma’ruf nahi munkar primarily as an instrument of individual moral control, limiting its potential as a framework for addressing structural injustice and social oppression. The objective of this study is to analyze the concept of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar from the perspective of transformative Islamic theology and to formulate a prophetic-emancipatory counseling model that integrates theological, psychological, and sociological dimensions. This research employs a qualitative approach based on library research using a critical-hermeneutic method. Data sources include the Qur’an, Hadith, classical exegetical works, Sufi and Islamic philosophical literature, as well as contemporary academic publications relevant to the topic. The analysis is conducted through textual interpretation, contextual analysis, and conceptual reconstruction. The findings reveal that amar ma’ruf nahi munkar possesses significant potential as a mechanism of critical consciousness that encourages both personal transformation and social change. The integration of divine values, self-awareness, and collective action produces a prophetic-emancipatory counseling model characterized by dialogue, participation, and liberation-oriented transformation. The novelty of this article lies in repositioning amar ma’ruf nahi munkar from a normative moral doctrine into a social counseling framework capable of linking religious reflection, the internalization of prophetic values, and social transformation within the broader discourse of transformative anti-oppression theology.

Abstract

This article departs from the epistemological crisis in contemporary Islamic studies, which reveals a disconnection between religious texts and the social realities of modern society. The concept of amar ma‘ruf nahi munkar has generally been understood in normative, legalistic, and moralistic terms, functioning more as an instrument of social control than as a mechanism for humanistic and emancipatory social transformation. On the other hand, developments in critical social sciences and modern counseling approaches have not yet been adequately integrated into the paradigm of Islamic theology. The research gap lies in the limited studies that reconstruct amar ma‘ruf nahi munkar as a form of social counseling grounded in a theology of advocacy through a prophetic-emancipatory approach. This article employs the theoretical frameworks of prophetic theology, social hermeneutics, and emancipatory counseling theory to construct a new paradigm for the relationship between text and context in Islamic studies. This research is a qualitative library study using a critical hermeneutic approach and theological-social discourse analysis of primary and secondary sources in Islamic studies, philosophy, and social sciences. The article argues that amar ma‘ruf nahi munkar needs to be reconstructed from a paradigm of moral judgment into a paradigm of social assistance that is dialogical, participatory, and transformative. Through a prophetic-emancipatory counseling approach, religion functions not merely as a source of normative legitimacy, but also as a praxis of social liberation that restores human dignity.

Abstract

This article discusses the paradigm of secular thought in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh siyasah) by examining the dynamics of modern Islamic political thought, the position of the state as a domain of ijtihadiyah, and the evolving forms and models of secular thought. The background to this study is based on significant changes in Islamic political discourse, which are increasingly influenced by modernization, globalization, and interaction with Western political systems. In this context, a tendency has emerged among some Muslim thinkers to adopt a secular approach in understanding the relationship between religion and the state. This research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach, drawing on classical and contemporary literature related to Islamic jurisprudence and secularism. The analysis is conducted descriptively and analytically to identify the characteristics of the paradigm of contemporary Islamic political thought, explain the state as a domain of ijtihadiyah (intelligible text), and examine the forms and models of secular thought in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh siyasah). The results indicate that contemporary Islamic political thought is dynamic and pluralistic, with a shift from a normative approach to a more contextual and rational one. State governance is understood as part of ijtihadiyah, thus allowing for various forms of government systems suited to the needs of society. Meanwhile, the secular paradigm in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh siyasah) is characterized by a functional distinction between religion and the state, as well as an emphasis on universal values such as justice and the welfare of the people. This paradigm has developed into several models, including moderate, substantive, liberal, and integrative-contextual secularism. Thus, it can be concluded that the secular paradigm of thought in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh siyasah) represents a form of intellectual adaptation to the challenges of the times, opening up space for renewal in Islamic political thought, while still generating debate regarding the boundaries between secular values and sharia principles.

Abstract

The Naksa incident of June 5 1967 was an epistemic shock for the Arab world. The defeat of Israel that led to the loss of the Sinai, the Golan, and the West Bank not only destroyed the region, but also undermined collective faith in the Arab project of renewal, unity, and progress. In the midst of narratives that blame external factors or divine destiny, Sadeq Jalal al-Azm 1934–2016 comes with a sharp analysis based on historical materialism. This article examines the construction of al-Azm's thought through a qualitative literature study with primary sources: Self-Criticism after the Defeat 1968 and Critique of Religious Thought 1969. The results of the study show that al-Azm broke with the theological-fatalistic explanation for defeat and replaced it with a structural diagnosis. He highlighted cultural dogmatism, magic in understanding religion, and the failure of Nasser's revolution to reach the level of public consciousness. The nationalism-socialism project only changed the political-economic structure, but failed to overhaul the superstructure of thought. As a solution, al-Azm proposed Hukumah Madaniyyah or civil secularism as a prerequisite for democracy and sustainable progress. Different from Hassan Hanafi who built the "Islamic Left", al-Azm places religion as a relative historical-social phenomenon. This article positions al-Azm as a “critical mirror” that encourages honest dialogue between tradition, revelation, and modern rationality.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Islamic spiritual values, specifically patience (ṣabr) and sincerity (ikhlāṣ), within contemporary visual media using Hasan al-Basri’s perspective of Akhlak Tasawuf. While previous studies on the film Ayat-Ayat Cinta (2008) predominantly focused on polygamy, feminism, or cultural commodification, this research addresses a critical academic gap by analyzing the film as a visual laboratory for internal spiritual transformations. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, data was collected through rigorous observation of dialogues and scenes, validated via source triangulation. The findings reveal that patience is represented as an active ethical response through three manifestations: ṣabr ’ala al-ta’ah, ṣabr ’ala al-musibah, and patience as the highest spiritual station (maqam). Concurrently, sincerity is depicted through horizontal, vertical, and transformative dimensions. These two pillars act as determinant factors in structuralizing the spiritual character development of the main character, Fahri. This study implies that popular cinema serves as an effective pedagogical vehicle for internalizing classical Sufi ethics among modern urban Muslim societies, bridging the bifurcation between classical Islamic texts and modern screen culture.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of affirming the position of the Sunnah as a source of Islamic law after the Qur'an, amidst ongoing debate regarding its validity. This article aims to analyze the position of the Sunnah as a source of Islamic law, examine the basis for its validity based on the Qur'an, hadith, consensus of the Companions, and rational evidence, and explain its role in the Qur'an's development of Islamic law. The research uses a qualitative approach with library research through a review of relevant primary and secondary sources, followed by descriptive-analytical analysis using a normative approach. The results indicate that the Sunnah has strong legitimacy as the second source of Islamic law after the Qur'an, both normatively and methodologically. As-Sunnah also functions as a reinforcement (ta'kid) of the provisions of the Al-Qur'an, as an explanation (bayan) for verses that are still global, general, or absolute, as well as forming laws (tasyri') on matters that are not explained explicitly in the Al-Qur'an. Thus, As-Sunnah is an authoritative and integral source of law in the formation and development of Islamic law.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation in Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab and its implementation in Islamic Religious Education. The study uses a qualitative approach with the type of library research. The primary data source of the study is Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab, while secondary data sources include books, journals, and relevant previous research. The data collection technique is carried out through documentation studies, while data analysis uses content analysis methods. The results of the study indicate that religious moderation according to M. Quraish Shihab is based on the concept of wasathiyah which emphasizes an attitude of balance, justice, tolerance, deliberation, respect for diversity, and rejection of extreme attitudes in religion. These values have strong relevance to Islamic Religious Education and can be implemented through integration in learning objectives, development of teaching materials, teacher role models, the use of discussion and deliberation methods, and strengthening the moderate character of students. Thus, M. Quraish Shihab's thoughts can be the basis for developing moderate, inclusive Islamic Religious Education, and oriented towards the formation of the character of students who are able to live harmoniously in a pluralistic society.
