Abstract

Abstract Naskh is the most productive topic that creates differences, both between classical scholars and contemporary scholars, as well as between classical scholars themselves. In general, the themes of the naskh produce four theories: naskh as the erasure of verses from the Qur'an, wether legal or redaction or both at once, naskh as the erasure of the previous prophet's Shari'ah; naskh as the erasure of miracles and naskh as the postponement of the application of verses of the Qur'an. So far, these four theories have not been reconciled, even though in fact there is no contradiction between all of these theories. Therefore, by adopting Aksin Wijaya's appreciative-critical and critical-appreciative thinking framework, the author will position each naskh theory as a friend in speaking as well as an opponent in exchanging ideas or vice versa. Firstly, where is the gap between each theory, so that it allows the author to criticize and at the same time stop its constancy not only as a theory, but also to stop its constant contradiction with other theories? Second, how to formulate each theory into a new theoretical building which the author calls naskh tawfīqī (reconciliatory naskh)? These two formulations of the problem result in the conclusion that: first, there is no contradiction between mask theories, so it is not appropriate to side with one while ignoring the other. Second, naskh tawfīqī as a novelty of this article is a new reading of verses that are considered contradictory by emphasizing the context of the verses, both internal and external and then looking for contextual equivalents in the contemporary world of thought. Keywords: naskh, tawfīqī, critic, reconciliation

Abstract

Abstract This article constituates a critical review of Mehdi Azaiez’s scholary work, “Sharing Qur’anic Meanings: Outlines for Dialogical Hermeneutic” (2023), proposing a methodological approach to harmonize contemporary trends in Qur’anic studies, particularly within Western scholarship, termed ‘dialogical hermeneutic’. Employing an explanatory-reflective framework, the review engages rigorously with relevant academic sources. It addresses three pivotal questions: firstly, how does Azaiez articulate dialogical hermeneutic and its applications?; secondly, why is the exploration necessary?; and thirdly, what insights emerge from his endeavors? Findings reveal dialogical hermeneutics as a collaborative approach, merging genealogical, anatomical, and anagnostic models in Qur’anic interpretation, fostering dialogue between Western and Islamic scholarly traditions. Azaiez’s application example in interpreting Surah al-Ikhlaṣ. While the conclusions drawn are still partial, the exposition of the method appears organized, making it potentially applicable for researchers in Qur'anic studies. However, it would be better if Azaiez releases new writings to complement its shortcomings. Keywords: Mehdi Azaiez; dialogical hermeneutic; contemporary Qur’anic studies

Abstract

Abstract Israiliyat spread widely through books of interpretation, stories of the prophets, and not infrequently from the talks of a few missionaries. In the case of Yusuf-Zulaikha, Israel succeeded in making the majority of Muslims in various parts of the world almost (or even already) believe that Zulaikha was the name of the wife of the king of Egypt who later became the wife of Prophet Yusuf. It is proven to be believed by the occurrence of Yusuf and Zulaikha's name in the prayers of the wedding ceremony. This research aims to reveal two things: First, what is the history of Israiliyat in the book Jamî' al-Bayân 'an Ta'wîli Âyât al-Qurân that is related to the story of Yusuf-Zulaikha? And Second, what is the quality of the Israeli narratives? To achieve that purpose, the writer relies on two theories at once. First, the historical theory that functions as research material to find out the consistency or inconsistency of the history of Israel; Second, the theory of al-jarh wa al-ta'dîl which is useful to know the credibility of each narrator. The connection between one narrator and another narrator will also be thoroughly studied through this theory. By using the qualitative research method, this research will produce the conclusion that, the enlightenment that is a little surprising that the assumption that is almost believed by the majority of Muslims about Zulaikha as the wife of al-'Aziz who later became the wife of Prophet Yusuf is sourced from the history of Israiliyat has so many flaws that it is not can be accepted, let alone believed to be true. Abstract

Abstract Interpretation of the Qur'an encompasses various methods and branches, depending on the study's requirements and the type of verse being interpreted. Each method offers a different and complementary perspective of analysis. One such method is the visualisation of the Qur'an, which involves interpreting the Qur'an through imaginary projections. This model of interpretation, also known as 'at-tashwir', was introduced by Sayyid Quthb. This method tries to strengthen the analysis with a visual point of view and then discuss it with psychological studies. The author poses two main questions: What is the visualisation of Qur'anic verses? And how does it correlate with psychological theories? The study will explore the meaning of verses in the Qur'an by emphasising the visual aspects present in the text. Visualisation is based on information that can be perceived by the five human senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. After obtaining the images, the data will be analysed psychologically, supported by other scientific disciplines such as biology, history, and the arts. The use of psychology and related disciplines' theories will aid in understanding the visualisation. The analysis aims to explore the workings of the five senses and the human body's response to different stimuli. The study found that visualising Qur'anic verses has a significant emotional impact on the reader. The human psyche is closely linked to physical and empirical realities, which mutually influence each other. Keywords: Qur'an, Visualisation, Senses, Imagination, Psychology

Abstract

Abstract The statement says that the hijab was an obstacle to women's development during colonialism in Egypt sparked a long discussion about the wearing of the hijab at that time, especially after Qasim Amin conveyed it in his book entitled Tahrīr al-Mar'ah (1899). On the other hand, the hijab also paved the way for the emergence of feminist discourse among Egyptian society. This article discusses the hijab discourse in interpretation (tafsīr) in Egypt after the controversy caused by the publication of Qasim Amin's book. This research shows that there are two conflicting tendencies of thinking about women, especially in the wearing of hijab. The first group thinks that the hijab is a barrier to women's development. While the second group considers the hijab is not a determining factor for women's progress. This tendency has genealogical roots to imperialism in Egypt. Using Miriam Cooke's theory of feminism which does not only refer to feminist actions and activism, but also thoughts and seeks to change perceptions of women's social roles and responsibilities, this article analyse at how the hijab discourse in two interpretations published after Tahrīr al-Mar'ah, each written by an Egyptian feminist woman. Focusing on two tafsir, namely al-Sufūr wa al-Hijāb written by Nazirah Zainuddin (1928) and Nazarāt fī Kitābillah written by Zaynab Ghazali (1994), this article elaborates on the verses of the hijab which are interpreted in these two books and sees that – to borrow Amina Wadud's term – prior text cannot be separated from the mufassir. This article concludes that the interpretation carried out by the two women bring the ideology of the feminist groups of the two interpreters, namely the Egyptian Feminist Union (EFU) and the Muslim Ladies Association (MLA). In a broader scope, this also cannot be separated from the history of British imperialism in Egypt, along with the discourse of feminism brought by the imperialists. Abstract

Abstract Shawkat M. Toorawa is a contemporary figure who wants to show the unity of Al-Qur’an by presenting its rhyming translation. According to him, the translator ideally should not only focus on how to copy the content to the diverse languages, but should also maintain the feel of the original text. Because of his translation orientation prioritizes readers understanding – not just copying the text-, he is very detailed and careful in looking for appropriate equivalents of the translated words, including lexical echo and hapax in the Al-Qur’an. Using descriptive analysis method and linguistic approach, the author means to examine Shawkat M. Toorawa’s translation method, as well as his perspective about lexical echoes and hapaxes in the Al-Qur’an. This research reveals three findings. One, the Toorawa’s translation uses a micro-structure approach, it caused the study of micro-structure of the text can produce a macro understanding of the text itself. Two, lexical echo in Al-Qur’an has function to maintain the narrative of the text because it ties the verse that comes later with the previous verse. Three, Toorawa maintains the unique structure of hapax by creating meaning that is appropriate as well as not popularly used in the meaning of other words.
