Abstract

Semantic studies of Qur’anic vocabulary are often confined to partial lexical interpretations that separate the physical and metaphysical dimensions of meaning. This study highlights the semantic complexity of the lexeme safara (سفر), which possesses various semantic derivations—ranging from travel (safar), illumination (asfara), to angels (safarah)—that are frequently misunderstood as unrelated homonyms. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the semantic structure of the word safara in order to identify the core meaning that binds these variants within the Qur’anic worldview. Using a descriptive qualitative method with the Semantic Field Theory approach and componential meaning analysis, this study examines eleven Qur’anic verses containing derivations of the root safara. The findings reveal a novel insight: the derivations of safara do not merely denote “travel,” but rather revolve around the philosophical concept of al-inkisyāf (disclosure or unveiling). Safar signifies the unveiling of one’s true character and the discovery of new places; asfara denotes the unveiling of light from the darkness of dawn; and safarah refers to the unveiling of written revelation conveyed by angels. The theoretical implication of this study demonstrates that the Qur’anic derivational system integrates natural phenomena, human activities, and metaphysical entities within a coherent semantic network, while also challenging conventional lexical interpretations that limit safara solely to the notion of physical mobility.

Abstract

Low students’ learning motivation and limited vocabulary (mufrodat) mastery remain persistent challenges in Arabic language learning, leading to low student engagement and overall learning outcomes. This study aims to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through the implementation of the drill method supported by flashcard media. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with the researcher acting as the instructor in the Arabic language learning process involving 32 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and questionnaires to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the teaching and learning process and students’ responses. The results indicate that the systematic application of the drill method combined with flashcard media enhances students’ vocabulary retention, pronunciation accuracy, and learning enthusiasm. Flashcards function as visual stimuli that support memory reinforcement, while repetitive practice through the drill method deepens students’ understanding of vocabulary. In addition, students demonstrate increased motivation, self-confidence, and active participation during classroom activities. Therefore, the integration of the drill method and flashcard media proves to be an effective and enjoyable learning strategy for improving vocabulary mastery in Arabic language learning and can serve as an alternative approach for teachers in developing vocabulary instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze linguistic errors occurring in final project presentations by master's students in Arabic Language Education, semester 4, at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State University, Malang. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, the research focuses on gaining an in-depth understanding of the complexities of linguistic errors within their natural context. Data sources include both primary data—direct observations during presentation sessions and in-depth interviews with students and their academic supervisors—and secondary data derived from academic documents such as thesis guidelines, teaching materials, and theoretical literature on linguistic errors, including works by Al-Bayyinah (2019), Al-Masri (2020), and Al-Turk (2017) on scientific presentation structures. Data were collected without audio or video recordings to ensure participant privacy and ethical integrity. Data analysis followed the framework of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, complemented by Saldaña’s coding cycles involving descriptive, pattern, and thematic coding. Findings revealed various types of linguistic errors, including phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and discourse errors, with major contributing factors being the influence of native language, speaking anxiety, and limited speaking practice in Arabic. The results offer strategic recommendations for curriculum development and pedagogical improvement in graduate-level Arabic language instruction, particularly in strengthening spoken communication skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of picture media in improving Arabic vocabulary (mufrodat) comprehension among seventh-grade students at MTs Taswirul Afkar Surabaya. Learning Arabic vocabulary often poses challenges for students because Arabic words tend to be abstract and require a high level of memorization. Therefore, appropriate learning strategies are needed to help students understand vocabulary in a more concrete manner. Picture media are used as instructional tools to connect Arabic vocabulary with visual representations that are relevant to students’ daily lives. This study employed a qualitative approach with a field research design. The research subjects consisted of seventh-grade students and an Arabic language teacher at MTs Taswirul Afkar Surabaya. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation to obtain an in-depth understanding of the learning process and students’ responses to the use of picture media. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis, with data validity ensured through the criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The findings indicate that the use of picture media helps students better understand and remember Arabic vocabulary, increases learning interest, and encourages active student participation during the Arabic learning process. Therefore, picture media can be considered an alternative instructional strategy for teaching Arabic vocabulary that is contextual and appropriate to the characteristics of students at the madrasah tsanawiyah level.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of how the tragedy of love and exile in Qasidah Nūniyyah by Ibn Zaydun is constructed as a system of meaning that operates not only emotionally but also ideologically. Previous studies have predominantly emphasized its aesthetic and romantic dimensions, leaving its symbolic and mythological structures insufficiently explored. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the construction of tragic love and exile through the semiological framework of Roland Barthes, particularly his three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, this study examines selected verses containing major symbols such as night, tears, longing, fire, and exile. The findings indicate that at the denotative level, these symbols refer to literal experiences of separation and displacement. At the connotative level, they represent psychological suffering and identity fragmentation. At the mythological level, however, tragedy is naturalized as a process of spiritual purification and moral legitimation, where suffering becomes a sign of loyalty and dignity. The contribution of this research lies in demonstrating the applicability of Barthesian semiology to classical Arabic literature and revealing the ideological dimension embedded within Andalusian poetic symbolism.

Abstract

Based on observations, several Arabic language education students at the University of Jambi are graduates of public schools or non-religious educational institutions, so they lack a strong foundation in Arabic and require intensive programs to help them master speaking skills. The purpose of this study is to describe the process of learning maharah kalam and analyze the forms of learning in the continuing course of khitobah wal mundzarah as a strategy to strengthen the maharah kalam of Arabic Language Education students at the University of Jambi. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a case study type of research. This research was conducted by starting with observation and using structured interviews. Interviews were conducted with 5 students and 2 lecturers of the course as research samples. Then, the data obtained was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman and Saldana data analysis model, which includes the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the Arabic language learning process in the khitobah wal munadzarah course is carried out in stages, starting from theory, guided practice, practice, and output. The form of khitobah learning includes basic khitobah theories such as speech structure, speaking ethics, speech practice or public rhetoric, and conference/seminar simulations (students presenting papers or ideas in front of the class). Meanwhile, the munadzarah learning form consists of role-playing (students acting as orators or resource persons in certain scenarios), structured discussions with clear rules for constructing arguments, argument delivery exercises, and a final project in the form of an Arabic debate.
