Abstract

This research examines the perceptions and attitudes of urban Muslim youth in Indonesia towards modernity and globalization. Urban Muslim youth navigate the challenges and opportunities of a globalized world while striving to maintain their religious and cultural identities. This study aims to explore the factors influencing their perceptions, including religiosity, family dynamics, education, economic conditions, and technological advancements. Through a comprehensive literature review, this research highlights how these factors interplay to shape the worldview and behaviors of young Muslims in urban settings. The findings reveal that while some urban Muslim youth embrace modernity and globalization, seeing them as opportunities for technological advancement and improved quality of life, others perceive them as threats to their traditional values and religious identity. The study underscores the importance of understanding these perceptions to address the social and religious development of urban Muslim communities. By providing insights into the attitudes of urban Muslim youth, this research contributes to the broader discourse on religious and cultural identities amidst the forces of modernity and globalization.

Abstract

Religion plays a significant role in the social life of humans. Its function is not limited to the individual's spiritual aspects but also encompasses broader social dimensions, including the formation of communal identity, social solidarity, and societal stability. This study aims to explore the dialectics of religion in the urban community of Tolerance Village in Bandung through the perspective of Emil Durkheim's functionalism of religion. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-critical method. The results indicate that religious practices in Tolerance Village serve not only as a personal expression of an individual's relationship with God but also as a means to build communal identity and strengthen social solidarity. Functionalism of religion, within the context of religious dialectics, fosters harmony and religious teachings interpreted contextually can create inclusive and tolerant religious practices, in accordance with local culture and the needs of urban society. This study's findings are expected to serve as a reference for further research in specific religious phenomena and religious studies in general.

Abstract

This study examined the ways in which Muslim communities in DKI Jakarta have adapted and demonstrated resilience in the context of environmental challenges. This study focuses on the adaptation strategies developed by Muslim communities in response to environmental disturbances, including flooding, pollution, and water quality degradation. To investigate these strategies, the study employs theoretical approaches drawn from the fields of socio-ecological resilience, climate justice, and urban green infrastructure. The research methods employed included a qualitative analysis of environmental policies, community practices, and adaptive responses. The findings indicated that the resilience of these communities was underpinned by robust religious values, social cohesion, and pioneering adaptation strategies. The implementation of urban green infrastructure has been demonstrated to enhance the adaptive capacity of communities in response to climate change. Furthermore, this study underscored the necessity for the equitable distribution of environmental benefits in order to safeguard vulnerable communities. One limitation of this study was that its analysis was predominantly qualitative and focused on Muslim communities in DKI Jakarta. The findings of this study made a significant scientific contribution by demonstrating that a holistic approach that integrated social, cultural, and ecological aspects could effectively enhance community resilience to climate change. Additional research is required to test this hypothesis in diverse contexts with a more comprehensive quantitative approach.

Abstract

Research conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Research and Development Agency (Balitbang Kemenag) in 2020, the Indonesian Survey Institute in 2022, and the Indonesian National Counterterrorism Agency in 2023 indicates that radicalism continues to be a significant issue in Indonesia, necessitating a variety of solution proposals to achieve harmony among religious communities. This study examines the social dynamics and interactions among religious communities within the context of the Rice Alms Movement in Kampung Toleransi, Bandung, Indonesia. Employing an ethnographic approach, the research aims to understand how the rice alms movement contributes to the development of social harmony and solidarity in a pluralistic society. The study subjects include five key roles in the community: the Neighborhood Association Head (Ketua RW), Religious Leaders, Community Leaders, Youth Leaders, and Academics. Data collection methods involved in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document studies. Data analysis was performed using NVIVO 12 software. The findings indicate that the Rice Alms Movement has successfully strengthened solidarity and empathy among residents from diverse religious backgrounds, while also reducing economic disparities. The involvement of religious communities and the younger generation are key factors in the success of this movement. This research provides empirical evidence on the role of religious practices in promoting social harmony and tolerance among religious communities. Recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of the movement include developing a more organized management system, continuous educational programs, and collaboration with local government and non-governmental organizations. The findings of this study contribute to the academic understanding of the relationship between religion, social solidarity, and community development, and provide practical insights for similar initiatives in other pluralistic societies.

Abstract

This study examines the role of philanthropy in the creative economy sector, focusing on the challenges and opportunities faced through a literature review. The creative economy plays a vital role in economic growth and cultural development, while philanthropy provides critical resources to support creative initiatives. However, the integration of philanthropy in this sector faces several challenges, including alignment between philanthropic goals and the needs of the creative industry, equitable distribution of funds, and evaluation of the impact of philanthropic contributions. The literature suggests that philanthropy can enhance innovation and cultural diversity, but there is a gap in understanding and communication between philanthropists and creative professionals. The effectiveness of philanthropic efforts is often hampered by bureaucracy and a lack of strategic alignment. Opportunities to enhance the role of philanthropy include strengthening collaboration between philanthropic organizations and creative actors, leveraging technology for more efficient fund distribution, and developing metrics to measure the impact of philanthropic investments. This study suggests that a more strategic, inclusive, and transparent approach to philanthropy in the creative economy sector could unlock substantial benefits, promoting innovation, cultural enrichment, and economic resilience. This study provides important insights for developing best practices in philanthropic engagement in the creative economy sector, ensuring that the needs of diverse creative communities are met and sustained.

Abstract

The phenomenon of divorce due to online gambling in East Jakarta has become a worrying issue, with a significant increase in recent years. This study aims to identify the factors that lead to the rise in online gambling-related divorce rates and develop effective strategies for recovery. The research method involves collecting data through surveys, in-depth interviews with affected families, and analyzing Islamic legal literature regarding online gambling. The results of the study showed that online gambling addiction causes serious damage to family structures, including severe financial problems, mental health disorders, and erosion of trust between family members. The study also found that ease of access and economic incentives are the main reasons people engage in online gambling. The impact of these findings underscores the need for comprehensive interventions, such as public education on gambling risks, emotional and financial support for affected families, and affordable rehabilitation programs. This study concludes that recovery strategies that involve collaboration between governments, health institutions, and local communities are urgently needed to reduce the negative impact of online gambling and help families get back on a healthier track. Proactive and collaborative efforts can effectively address this problem and reduce the divorce rate related to online gambling in East Jakarta.

Abstract

In practice, Islamic preaching in this era is more often displayed and preached only on the narrow aspects of spirituality and morality. Meanwhile, aspects of culture, social, economy, let alone politics are rarely mentioned. The involvement of preachers in politics is still considered taboo. In such conditions, Zainudin MZ emerged to break the taboo. With a brave attitude, the kyai not only preached politically verbally but also directly entered into the practice of democratic politics that was full of deceit. By using a qualitative descriptive method that uses research data in the form of books, journals, and videos related to Zainudin MZ's political thoughts and movements, several findings were produced: first, the relationship between preaching and politics for Zainudin MZ is an integralistic relationship that is reflected in his preaching material on the ethics of political preaching and criticisms of government policies. Second, Zainudin MZ's political activities are based on a strong spirit of Islamism. It was proven when mass organizations and political parties were prohibited from using Islamic principles with the implementation of the sole principle of Pancasila, Zainudin immediately left the world of practical politics and focused on preaching. For him, there was no point in being in a party if the principle was not Islamic. When the sole principle was revoked, he returned to being active in politics and even became the general chairman of the Islamic party. Third, Zainudin's involvement in practical politics found a new phenomenon that preaching politics is difficult to realize in the realm of democratic politics. Therefore, after feeling that his preaching idealism could not be implemented practically, Zainudin MZ chose to withdraw from politics and called his involvement in past politics the era of ignorance. Fourth, the substance of Zainudin MZ's preaching is very relevant for urban society, especially in maintaining Muslim identity and in facing various social, cultural and political challenges.

Abstract

Since religious literacy originated in Western society, it is important to first address its application in America and Europe. The teaching of the Bible in American contexts faces several serious issues, particularly in Texas public schools. These issues include anti-Semitism, sectarianism bias, the authority to interpret the Bible as God's word, understanding Judaism through a Christian lens, the Bible as a science textbook, and the Bible's role as the foundation of America. If Bible education in general continues to confront numerous issues in America, then Indonesia's issue is determining whether religion must be taught in formal education. Practically speaking, religious literacy refers to the capacity to comprehend various religious doctrines and rituals to maintain societal harmony and prevent conflicts stemming from religious differences. The significance of religious literacy and civic education in Islamic education and pesantren will be emphasized in this article. This article employs interdisciplinary methodologies to conduct qualitative research. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies are the approaches used to collect the data. Comparative constant and symbolic interaction are the analysis techniques used. This article concluded that teaching about religion in accordance with the religious literacy idea is far superior to placing a strong emphasis on dogma and indoctrination. The religious education policy determines whether religious literacy instruction is successful. It is necessary to reconstruct and rework the goal and methodology of religious education in the instance of Indonesia.
