The method used in this research is a quantitative approach with the correlation method. The sample consisted of 30 eleventh grade IPA students at SMAN 12 Rejang Lebong. The instruments used in this research, namely a questionnaire used to measure the level of reading habit and a writing test to measure the level of students' critical thinking skills. There are several results from this research, including the following; the reading habit of the eleventh grade IPA students of SMAN 12 Rejang Lebong is quite good with an average of 74.37. Some students have very good reading habits, but there are still some students who have poor reading habits. Second, students' critical thinking skills in writing analytical exposition texts in eleventh grade IPA students at SMAN 12 Rejang Lebong are low because they have an average score of 62.57, but some students have good critical thinking skills. And the last, the correlation between students reading habit and critical thinking skill. There is a positive significant correlation between the both variables with a sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.00 < 0.05 and a Pearson correlation of 0.615. So it can be concluded that there was a positive significant correlation between students' reading habit and critical thinking skills in eleventh grade IPA students at SMAN 12 Rejang Lebong with a high correlation.

Abstract

This study's main goal was to ascertain whether the silent way method had a significant effect on the vocabulary achievement of eighth-grade students at SMPN 29 Bengkulu Tengah. In this research, a quasi-experimental design was used. In this study, there were two classes of students. The first group includes the experimental class, while the second includes the control class. The two groups were then given a pre-test and a post-test. With the two classes, various strategies were employed. The experimental class was instructed using the silent way method, whereas the control class was instructed using the direct method, as a result of the application of this strategy in classroom instruction. This study's sampling technique was a purposive sampling method. During the gathering of data, the researcher used the test as a research tool. The test consists of 20 valid multiple-choice questions that are presented in this method. The researcher tested the validity of the hypothesis using the independent sample t-test in the SPSS 22 program. According to the findings of the hypothesis test, the independent sample t-test (sig. 2-tailed) result was 0.000, which is less than 0.05, and the t-count value is 4.698, which is more than the t-table df=22 (2.07387). Therefore, it can be stated that the silent way method of teaching had a significant effect on vocabulary achievement among students at SMPN 29 Bengkulu Tengah.

This research is conducted on the basis of the researcher’s observatthathere the students are getting difficulties to understand the meaning of texts. The objective of the research is to find out the effectiveness of GIST strategy to teach students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. This research involved 50 students. 25 students were in the experimental class and 25 students were in the control class. The researcher used cluster random sampling to determine a sample. An instrumented test to collect the data used test. They are pre-test and post-test. The type of test is multiple choices test. The assessment of the test result was focused on students’ reading comprehension on narrative texts. Furthermore, the data was analyzed by using statistical analysis technique and the hypothesis used t-test. Based on the computation of result, the average of pre-test score of experimental class was 65.5 and the control class was 57.72. Meanwhile, the average of post- test score in the experimental class was 80.2 and the one in the control class was 72.2. So, it can be concluded that based on the result, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The reason alternative hypothesis was accepted because the p- value (0.045) was lower than sig. α = 0.05 (5%). So, it means that there was a significance increase after applying GIST strategy on teaching students’ Reading comprehension on Narrative text
