Abstract

The paper aims to identify the essential methodology adopted by Sayyid Qutb in his classic work, tafsir Fi Zilal al-Qur’an. The work laid out highly profound interpretation and scriptural analysis of the Qur’an and its universal moral and political ideas based on cultural-linguistics and dynamic framework. The work set forth to expound socio-ethical principle of the Qur’an and its ideological postulate and implication in contemporary perspective. The study is based on qualitative approaches in the form of library and documentary survey. The data were obtained from related primary and secondary sources and analysed using descriptive, historical and analytical approaches. The finding shows that Sayyid Qutb had formulated an inclusive method of philosophical interpretation of the Qur’an that outlined his dynamic framework (haraki) of religious and ethico-legal views as its core ideological basis and premises. The pattern of thought and interpretation were influenced by this method in the development of his tafsir which underline his socio-political doctrine and philosophy and idealism which highlighted the essence of Islam and its underlying values in contemporary civilization.

Abstract

This study explores Abu Thanâ' Shihâbuddîn Al-Alûsî's interpretation of Qur'anic verses addressing self-harm (ẓālim li nafsih) and its relevance to the modern phenomenon of self-inflicted harm. Using a qualitative, descriptive-analytical method, the research examines Al-Alûsî's tafsir in Rūh al-Ma'ānī, particularly regarding verses such as Qs. Al-Baqarah: 195, Qs. Ali-Imran: 117, and others. Al-Alûsî interprets ẓālim li nafsih as actions violating divine commands, encompassing spiritual, moral, and physical dimensions. He emphasizes that such acts result in self-inflicted harm both in this world and the hereafter. The research draws parallels between ẓālim li nafsih and self-harm, illustrating how the latter reflects a crisis of spirituality and morality. Al-Alûsî highlights the importance of repentance, spiritual reflection, and maintaining a strong relationship with Allah SWT to heal spiritual wounds caused by self-harm. His interpretation underscores the Qur'an's guidance for addressing internal struggles through a holistic approach combining spiritual, social, and moral support. The study concludes that Al-Alûsî's insights provide a meaningful framework for understanding and addressing self-harm within an Islamic context, offering hope and a path to redemption for individuals affected by this issue.

Abstract

Food security is a multidimensional global challenge with material, spiritual, and social aspects. This research explores the concept of food security in the Al-Qur'an through a thematic (maudu’i) tafsir approach, analyzing relevant verses to understand its principles and applications. The study identifies the concept of food security in the Qur'an, analyzes its principles based on Qur'anic verses, explains the roles of individuals, families, and society in supporting food security, and examines related challenges based on thematic interpretations of the Qur'an. Using a qualitative method with literature study and thematic interpretation, the research analyzes Al-Qur'an verses through authoritative tafsir books supported by related literature. The results show that the Qur'an emphasizes a holistic concept of food security with spiritual, social, and material dimensions, stressing sustainability, fair distribution, and ecosystem balance. Principles include sustainable resource management, strategic planning, and distributive justice. The responsibility lies with individuals consuming halal, families ensuring welfare, and society supporting fair distribution. Key challenges identified are resource exploitation, unequal distribution, and climate change.

Abstract

This research explores the concept of qiwamah (men's leadership over women) as outlined in Qur'an 4:34, focusing on the interpretations of Quraish Shihab and Husein Muhammad. It examines how these interpretations address both traditional understandings and their applicability to modern social contexts. Employing a qualitative and comparative approach, the study draws on primary sources, such as Tafsir Al-Misbah and Husein Muhammad's writings, alongside additional literature. The findings highlight that the Qur'an attributes men's leadership to their inherent advantages and financial responsibilities. Quraish Shihab interprets this verse as universally valid, while Husein Muhammad views it as context-dependent and adaptable to contemporary conditions. Both scholars engage with the division of leadership roles in domestic and public spheres, yet their approaches reflect differing perspectives on its relevance to current societal norms.

Abstract

This study deeply examines the principles of Tadabbur (contemplation) of Surat Al-Baqarah in Muhammad Ratib An-Nabulsi's exegesis, "Tadabbur Āyātillāh fī al-Nafsi wa al-Kawni wa al-Ḥayāti," and its relevance to contemporary Qur'anic interpretative studies. Tadabbur is essential for holistic Qur'anic comprehension, yet systematic literature on its principles remains limited, especially approaches integrating spiritual, cosmological, and practical life aspects. An-Nabulsi offers a unique methodology bridging sacred texts with modern realities. Employing a qualitative-analytical approach, this study explores An-Nabulsi's Tadabbur principles, highlighting how his exegesis provides a transformative framework for applicable Qur'anic understanding. Findings indicate that An-Nabulsi's principles are highly relevant, offering a new lens for addressing modern human challenges, while enriching the scholarly treasury of tafsir, rendering the Qur'an a dynamic life guide. This research contributes to the development of comprehensive Qur'anic Tadabbur methodologies.

Abstract

This research discusses how Wahbah al-Zuhaili interprets verses that hint at nepotism in Al-Tafsir al-Munir fi al-'Aqida wa al-Syari'ah wa al-Manhaj. The verses discussed in this research are based on terms that are the principle of nepotism in the Qur'an such as al-Khiyanah, al-Ghill, Syafa'ah sayyi'ah, ittiba' al-Hawa, and ja'l wazir min Ahl. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach to conceptually examine various matters related to nepotism from the perspective of the Qur'an. Therefore, this research is a type of qualitative and thematic research through literature review, namely by writing, reducing, presenting data, and analyzing it. The purpose of this research is to find out how the interpretation of Wahbah al-Zuhaili in Al-Tafsir al-Munir fi al-'Aqidah wa al-Syari'ah wa al-Manhaj regarding verses that hint at nepotism. The results of this research show that Wahbah al-Zuhaili views nepotism proportionally by distinguishing between negative and positive. Negative nepotism occurs if the position is given only because of proximity, without regard to qualifications, so it includes betrayal, ghulul, and intercessory sayyi'ah, ittiba' al-Hawa, and ja'l wazir min Ahl. On the other hand, nepotism is allowed if it is based on competence, honesty, good intentions, and does not violate the Sharia. Harun's appointment by Musa is an example of legitimate nepotism because it is based on preaching motivation and qualifications. For al-Zuhaili, justice, qualification, and intention are the main yardsticks in evaluating nepotism.

Abstract

Environmental degradation results from humans disobeying God's command to maintain harmony with nature. All elements of the universe reflect God's word and form an ecosystem. When humans disrupt this balance through selfish actions, nature reacts in ways harmful to human life, underlining that everything is subject to Allah's will. This study analyzes the concept of environmental damage in the Qur'an using Abdussatar Fathullah Said's maudu’i method and explores its connection with Yusuf Qardawi's idea of hifzhul bi'ah (environmental preservation). Using qualitative library research, it finds that the Qur'an's teachings on preventing environmental harm align with hifzhul bi'ah: 1) Humans, as earth's caliphs, must preserve and protect nature (QS Al-Baqarah 2:30); 2) The Qur'an commands maintaining and forbids destroying the environment, as in QS Al-A'raf 7:56 and other verses (QS Al-Baqarah 2:11-12, 60, 205; Al-A'raf 7:56, 74, 85; Hud 11:85; As-Syu'ara 26:150-152).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the story of the Prophet Yusuf in Surah Yusuf using a psychological approach to understand the spiritual values contained in the story. The method used is a qualitative study with a psychological Quranic interpretation approach through a review of related verses and interpretations from Tafsir Al-Azhar (Buya Hamka) and Tafsir Al-Misbah (Quraish Shihab). The results of the study indicate that the story of the Prophet Yusuf contains important psychological themes such as resilience to trauma, self-control, forgiveness, and spirituality as a foundation for psychic strength. This story not only provides motivation but also psychological solutions in dealing with conflict, social pressure, and life's temptations. In conclusion, the integration of spiritual and psychological values in Surah Yusuf can be used as a reference in the development of spirituality-based therapy and the formation of a resilient and noble Islamic personality. This study has practical implications for Islamic psychology and religious education in the Indonesian socio-cultural context.

Abstract

The Ulul Azmi prophets in the Qur’an—Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and Muhammad SAW—faced deep psychological conflicts amid severe trials from their communities. This study explores their inner struggles and the moral and psychological lessons (ibrah) relevant to developing emotional intelligence today. Using qualitative thematic interpretation and interdisciplinary analysis combining tafsir and psychology, it reveals unique emotional challenges for each prophet: Nuh’s frustration from rejection, Ibrahim’s dilemma over sacrificing his son, Musa’s trauma and guilt, Isa’s social pressures, and Muhammad’s burden of leadership and rejection. Their responses demonstrated core emotional intelligence traits like regulation, patience, empathy, and resilience. The prophetic narratives thus provide valuable lessons for emotional and spiritual resilience in modern life. Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the integration of Qur’anic verses and physical science concepts in Indonesian high school physics textbooks, focusing on the interpretation of lightning through QS. Hud:67. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and critical content analysis, this research combines semiotic theory from Roland Barthes and Charles S. Peirce, alongside a comparative exegesis (tafsir muqaran) of Ibn Kathir, Al-Alusi, and Tantawi Jauhari. The findings reveal that interpreting the word ṣayḥah (الصيحة) as “sound wave” in the textbook neglects its theological and linguistic dimensions. This misinterpretation violates the principles of Qur’anic hermeneutics and constructs a myth that the Qur’an contains explicit modern scientific theories. The study concludes that a proper integration between science and Islam must be grounded in valid interpretative methodology and semiotic awareness. It offers a conceptual contribution toward developing a more rigorous, hermeneutical, and ethical model of Islam-science integration.
