Abstract

In Indonesia, multilingualism is a common phenomenon, where individuals regularly switch between multiple languages and dialects in their daily communication. Within this multilingual environment, people often learn several words from their second (L2) or third (L3) language alongside their native tongue (L1). This study aims to investigate the primary linguistic features affected by interlingual interference among multilingual learners at IAIN Langsa and how the principles of Optimality Theory can help explain the observed patterns of interlingual interference in the language learning processes of these students, specifically those in the Arabic Education Department. To address these questions, the research focuses on the language spoken by multilingual learners proficient in Acehnese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Arabic at IAIN Langsa. Data collection involved fieldwork, interviews, and recordings, with five students as the research subjects. The study results indicate that interlingual interference has a multifaceted impact on multilingual learners in the Arabic Education Department at IAIN Langsa. The findings demonstrate that Acehnese phonology influences the development of Arabic words. This is evident in how Acehnese-Arabic speakers modify the final phoneme /d/ to /t/ in three words: [a.had] becomes [a.hat], [ah.mad] becomes [ah.mat], and [mau.lid] changes to [mo.lit]. Multilingual learners may transfer pronunciation patterns, intonation, and accent elements from their native languages into the target language, resulting in pronunciation difficulties and challenges in acquiring the phonological system of the target language.

Abstract

In navigating the complexities of implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, English teachers find themselves at the forefront of educational innovation. The English teacher’s role becomes pivotal in sculpting an effective learning experience within the framework of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study is aimed to investigate the English teachers’ perspective and challenge on implementing Merdeka Curriculum in English teaching and learning process. This study delves into the English teachers’ perspective and all their challenges when they implemented Merdeka Curriculum. Through qualitative descriptive, the study aims to shed light the various perspectives and challenges encountered by English teachers, providing valuable insights for curriculum improvement and professional development in language action. Interviewing three English teachers who teach at madrasah which becomes pilot project for implementing Merdeka Curriculum, subsequently, the data is obtained indicating that they hold the perspective that the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English language learning has advantages in achieving material targets without rushing and in fostering student engagement, which is a requirement of the Merdeka Curriculum. According to them, these two aspects are positive outcomes of implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in English language learning. However, having positive aspects does not mean there are no challenges. The research subjects in this study stated that the biggest challenges in implementing the Merdeka curriculum in English language learning are understanding and accommodating the diversity of students’ character and learning styles, which will impact the determination of an effective model for English language instruction.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the form and cultural meaning of the toponymic variants of naming hamlets in Sembalun District, East Lombok. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The data in this research includes primary data obtained from books and official documents and secondary data in the form of information from sources who know the meaning of the names of hamlets in Sembalun. Then, the techniques used are library study techniques, interviews, recording and note taking. The analysis used is structural language analysis and anthropological linguistic analysis of the hamlet name terms used in naming hamlets in Sembalun District. The research results include three categories, namely word form, toponym variants, and the meaning of hope. First, form language units in the form of word compositions, with classification in the process of forming noun compositions with nouns, metaphorical noun compositions, noun compositions with adverbs, and noun compositions with adjectives. The composition of nouns with adverbs is the most dominant word composition unit found in the names of hamlets in Sembalun. Second, toponym variants are classified into embodiment aspects, social aspects and cultural aspects. Aspects of embodiment are found more at the level of the form of water, nature, and conditions of place (topography). Third, the meaning of naming hamlets in Sembalun District is classified based on the meaning of hope and the meaning of memory. The naming of hamlets in Sembalun District is more directed towards the hope that its people will have guidance in life, and be able to always surrender to their creator.

Abstract

This research analyzes the phenomenon of code-switching in the video titled “The Science of Love-Maudy Ayunda's Booklist,” uploaded by Maudy Ayunda on a video-sharing platform. The research methodology involves data collection through video analysis to identify instances of code-switching between Indonesian and English in Maudy Ayunda's discourse. Following identification, an analysis is conducted to understand the reasons behind the use of code-switching and its impact on public communication. The research findings indicate that code-switching is employed to enrich information delivery, emphasize concepts, and reach a broader audience. This phenomenon reflects the cultural and linguistic complexity in multilingual societies. Code-switching also plays a role in social inclusion and effective communication. This study provides valuable insights into cross-cultural and cross-linguistic communication and its relevance in the context of globalization and social media.

Abstract

Research on the Form and Meaning of Mosque Naming in Mataram City: This Morphosemantic Study aims to describe the form of mosque names morphologically and examine their meaning semantically. This research is a type of research with a descriptive qualitative approach. The data in this research are the names of mosques in Mataram City, while the data sources in this research include mosque administrators, the public, articles and other media. The data collection method in this research uses the Listening method with advanced techniques, the Listening Involvement Cakap technique, the Free Listening Involvement Cakap technique, the Note taking technique and the Recording technique. Apart from that, the Listening method is strengthened by the Interview method with the Cakap Semuka advanced technique. Furthermore, it is also strengthened by the Documentation method. The data analysis methods used include the Intralingual Matching method, the Extra Lingual Matching method and the Distributional method. The method for presenting data analysis in this research uses informal methods. The results of this research include the morphological forms of mosque names which are classified into words and phrases. Based on their meaning, mosque names are divided into lexical meaning and contextual (socio-cultural) meaning.
