Abstract

To understand the learning style of the learners is important and useful to decide what learning strategy is the most suitable to be implemented. Considering that significance, this study aims at analysing learning style of students of Travel Business Management, Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Bali (Bali Tourism Institute). The data was collected through questionaire in which the contentc is the adaptation of VARK questionaire which was developed by Flemming (1993, in Pritchard, 2009). Data was analysed quantitatively through tabulation and then described qualitatively. As the result, the students are found to have different learning styles, namely 6 students (20,69%) are aural, 5 students (17,24%) have read/write learning style, 15 students (51,72%) are kinaesthetic, and 1 students to each has bimodal kinaesthetic Read/write-kinaesthetic, bimodal aural-kinaesthetic, and trimodal visual-aural-read/write. Based on the result, it can be proposed a recommendation to the teacher that the strategies of teaching have to facilitate all the learning styles own by the students to make them able to learn at their best.

Abstract

This research attempts to explain a phenomenon that occurs psycholinguistics in everyday life, especially in the environment of English learner. The basic assumption is the English learner faces difficulties in producing English sentence orally, so that problems such as forgetting the language in producing the language could happen. The research will involve alumnus of English learners of English Language Institute LPBA Nurul Jadid domiciled in Jember. From the observations, there are approximately 86.7% of respondents admitted that they often run into problems in the production of English as second language. There are 60% of respondents admitted that they had experienced of forgetfulness in the production of English as second language in the level of the sentence. 80% in the level of words, 78.6% in the level of expression, and 71.4% in the level of the phrase. This study shows that forgetfulness in producing English has a neural factor that is the Short term Memory (STM) of the alumnus. They have difficulty in recalling the vocabularies in English.

Abstract

This study reveals the semantic fields from the "to see" verb in Javanese. The aims of this research is to describe the shape, function, meaning and role of semantic of each variant of the verb "to see". To realize this goal, qualitative research design was applied in this study and the semantic role theory of Vole and Van Valin (1984). Was also oriented in data analysis. Verbs that have semantic fields that are associated with the "to see" verb with intentional entities numbering 33. Each of them is ndêlok, ndêlêng, ningali, mirsani, ndeleng sacleraman, ndêlêng tênanên, ningali saestu, mirsani saestu, ningali sekedhap, mirsani sekedhap, mlengos, ngwasi, ngêmatake, ngematakên, ndhangak, dingkluk, nginceng, ngêlirêk, mêntêlêngi, ndelok mburi, and maca. The semantic roles of the arguments of each verb consist of agents and themes. This study only sheds light on the meaning field verb "to see" of the type of variant and a little about the general semantic role. For this reason, a more detailed study of the specific role of each variant of the verb is a topic that can be raised in the next study.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of code switching in English language learning, in terms of the form of code switching, the kind of code switching, the aim of code switching, the function of code switching and the causal factors of code switching. This study belongs to qualitative research. The subjects of this research were the English teacher and students. Meanwhile, the data were utterances of English teacher and students that contained code switching. The data were collected through observation, recording, note-taking and interview. Classroom activities, particularly in the teaching of English language, were recorded on video tapes and field notes. The data analysis revealed several findings. First, both teacher and students used word form of code switching, phrase form of code switching and sentence form of code switching when they were in the classroom. Second, the English teacher and the student used intern and extern code switching, temporary code switching, situational and metaphorical code switching. Third, the aim of using code switching done by the teacher and students were compensating for language limitation, to explain the material and strategy in teaching learning process. Fourth, the functions of code switching for teachers and student were as clarification, emphasis, repetition, translation, checking for understanding, tool for communication, developing vocabulary and tolerance. Fifth, the factors that caused code switching were to fulfil a need, to express or declare solidarity, to respect the listener and to be more informative.

Abstract

Music is one of the way to express emotions, opinions, and also criticism. The lyrics helps us to communicate, and spread its story. Argot in rap song is a sociolinguistic phenomenon that spreads in all languages, including French. The author conducted this study with the aim of knowing the formation of argot used, the meaning behind, and what correlation it has with situation in Marseille. The writer uses descriptive analysis method and theories that support this research are the theory of sociolinguistics and the process of forming argot Calvet (1994), as well as the theory of meaning Baylon and Mignot (1995). The conclusion contains apocope, apheresis, suffixation, and metonymy. The most uses type of formation is metonym. Metonym can deliver a figurative meaning to achieve dramatic effect, but still maintain its secretive nature. Argot has a relation with how singer express their situation and condition within their lyrics.

Abstract

This research is of two objectives, which are to examine the functions of Penebel Community’s expressions of prohibition and to reveal the meanings of the expressions. This research was conducted using qualitative research design. Data were collected by visiting the farmers’ habitats, observing their activities while recording using voice memo app in gadget, and conducting interviews to confirm the researchers’ understanding of the recorded messages. Results showed that the functions of Penebel inhabitants’ expressions of prohibition are informational and directives. Meanwhile the meanings of the expressions are both explicit and implied. The explicit meaning refers to the lexical meanings of the words that form it, which can be seen in the dictionary. The implied meaning is found based on the context of its use. Instead of containing illogical meanings and are considered to be out of date with the times, these phrases of prohibition needs to be preserved by providing their comprehensible meanings to the younger generation for they are a part of living culture and language.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the speech act functions found in the “Critical Eleven” film and reveal the conversational implicatures used by the film actors. To actualise this aims, this study was conducted using qualitative research designs and by making the speech act theory of (Levinson, 1983) and the speech act function theory of Searle (1979) as the basis for examining the speech act functions in the said film according to its type. The data were collected using the simak method, a method similar to observation one accompanied by an act of scrutinizing speeches of the actors in the film “Critical Eleven”. The oral data were collected from the conversations then transcribed into written data. The data analysis result are presented informally or descriptively. The results of data analysis showed there are five speech act functions in the film, namely representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The representative function is manifested in the act of giving witness, acknowledging, and stating. The directive one includes the act of asking, and urging. Commissive function includes expressing abilities and promising. Expressive function includes blaming, praising, and congratulating. Declarative function is manifested in the act of prohibiting. Examining the function and meaning of speech acts in the film “Critical Eleven” from the perspective of sociolinguistics is an important topic to raise in further research.

Abstract

Different procedures of translation are needed to analyze new testament bible of Mark’s gospel. The problems always come if new testament bible of Mark’s gospel from source language unknown in target language conceptly. The data sources of this research were taken from new testament of Mark’s gospel. The technique used in collecting the data was content analysis. The data were analyzed clearly based on the theory of translation procedures by Newmark (1988b). In presenting the data, it was used formal and informal method. According to the results, it can be concluded that found 11 procedures of translation, namely: Transference, Cultural Equivalent, Functional Equivalent, Descriptive Equivalent, Synonymy, Shifts or Transpositions, Modulation, Compensation, Paraphrase, Couplets, and Notes. Based on the results of the analysis, it was not found 4 procedures of translation, namely: Naturalization, Componential Analysis, Through-Translation, and Recognized Translation. The procedures of translation in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel mostly used were shifts or transposition, modulation, and synonymy. The data of shifts or transposition found were 136 of 636 data (21%). It can be concluded that actually holy text often applied shifts or transposition to make the process of translating text easily. In the other word, it was used different form from source text to translate into target text and it was applied also the words in target text that has similar meaning in source text,

Abstract

Culture and language are habitual things that are always done by the generation in a region. This research focused on the study of ethno-linguistic that discovered the grammatical meaning, cultural meaning and symbolic meaning of ‘Nyekah’ ceremony in Sesetan village, Denpasar. This research is an ethno-linguistic study in which the researcher will examine the procession of Nyekah in the perspective of linguistic that is related with culture. The method of data collection used is participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. There were 22 lingual elements that those data were categorized as elliptical sentences. Those data were analyzed to find the grammatical and cultural meaning. Furthermore, in ‘Nyekah’ ceremony there were 6 symbolic data which were used in the ritual. Every symbol had deep meaning that were related with religion, human life and nature.

Abstract

The research aims to find any lingual elements and meanings used by advertisers in “Sampoerna Hijau” Cigarette advertisements on Youtube. There are 5 editions of advertisements that are analized, “Edisi Dateng Kondangan”, “Edisi Selfie di Kondangan”, “Edisi Minum Es Kacang Ijo”, “Edisi Punyaku Lebih Nikmat” and the last is “Edisi Hijau Panas”. Seven Types of Meaning theory by Leech is used on this research. This study is design in a qualitative research. Researcher collected the data using observation methods. Then in the analysis of research data using Agih method with the basic technique that is Bagi Unsur Langsung or BUL techniques. The BUL method and technique are used by researcher to analyze the signs and forms found in Sampoerna Hijau cigarette advertisements so that they can easily classify these lingual signs and forms. The researcher found that the lingual form in the five editions of Sampoerna Hijau Cigarette Advertisements, namely: 10 interrogative sentences, 13 imperative sentences, 13 declarative sentences, 14 exclamation sentences, 2 nouns and 1 adjective. The meanings found in each lingual form are 5 meanings, with the following description: sentences that contain reflections as many as 12 sentences, sentences containing affective meanings of 22 sentences, sentences containing conceptual meanings of 15 sentences, sentences that contains a colloquial meaning of 2 sentences and the last sentence that contains connotative meaning of 1 sentence.
