Abstract

This study aims to examine the feminist approach employed in the characterization of Megan Twohey. The data were analyzed using a qualitative method. The data were gathered by using an observation method that was implemented into three approaches: watching the movie on Apple TV, reading the dialogues, and taking notes. The data were noted after watching and analyzing the film and reading the dialogues several times. By applying Murphy's characterization theory, the study identifies key traits such as bravery, intelligence, and unstoppable, which are crucial in depicting a strong, resilient female character. Additionally, using Tong's feminist theory, the research situates these traits within broader feminist discourses, highlighting how the character embodies various aspects of feminist ideologies, including the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated society. This analysis not only underscores the complexity of Megan Twohey's character but also contributes to a deeper understanding of how contemporary films can reflect and promote feminist values by portraying multifaceted female characters.

Abstract

This paper examines how the use of grammatical cohesion contributes to the coherent of the news discourse in The Jakarta Post reporting on the war between Russia and Ukraine. It identifies and analyzes grammatical cohesion, specifically reference, substitution, and ellipsis, which exist in the news text to bring coherence in the news text. The results revealed the most dominant type of references applied in the text were anaphoric references, and these references are very important to ensure the integrity and readability of the text. The study therefore reveals a lack of substitution because there is the need for precision in war reporting. The insights gained contribute to a deeper understanding of how linguistic devices are employed in the media to build cohesive and coherent narratives, offering valuable implications for both discourse analysis and English language education.

Abstract

Online media is one of the communication tools used by producers to convey messages to consumers in advertisements. This study examines the impact of using hyperbolic language style on consumer behavior in shampoo advertisements on social media through a stylistic analysis. Hyperbolic language is a type of language style that involves exaggerated statements or claims, often used in advertising to create memorable and persuasive messages. The aim of this research is to explore how this language style influences consumer perception, engagement, and ultimately, purchase decisions. By analyzing Clear and Pantene shampoo advertisements in online media, this study identifies frequently used hyperbolic techniques and evaluates their effectiveness in capturing attention and enhancing consumer engagement. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The data in this research consists of sentences and signs, while the data sources are Clear and Pantene shampoo advertisements in online media. The method used to collect the data is the observation method without direct involvement. The researcher collects and observes Clear and Pantene shampoo advertisements in online media. The collected data is then reduced, classified, verified, and tabulated based on its type. Subsequently, the researcher conducts data analysis based on stylistic theory. Additionally, the researcher interprets the data and draws conclusions. The results of the study show that hyperbole significantly enhances the emotional appeal of advertisements, leading to higher consumer interest and interaction. Moreover, hyperbole is used to highlight the advantages of Clear and Pantene shampoo products without disparaging or belittling other shampoo products. This study underscores the importance of stylistic elements in advertising and provides insights into how marketers can strategically use hyperbolic language to optimize their social media campaigns.

Abstract

This study analyzes the characterization of Grace, the main protagonist in ” Ready or Not” (2019), a movie about Grace, a newlywed who must survive from deadly game of hide-and-seek on her wedding night. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to identify and understand Grace’s character and used the observation method for the data collection. The data was collected from the movie, and accessed through the “Loklok” platform. The characterization of Grace was analyzed from three dimensions: psychological, sociological, and physiological, based on the theory of Wellek and Warren (1962). The study found the characterization of Grace Le Domas's transformation from naive to survival. Physiologically, Grace’s appearance shifts dramatically from a pristine wedding dress to a tattered, bloodied garment, symbolizing her transition through the trauma of her ordeal. Psychologically, her transformation from innocence to a determined survivor emphasizes the movie's exploration of the psychological effects of extreme tension and survival instincts. Sociologically, Grace’s lower socio-economic status compared to the wealthy Le Domas family emphasizes her struggle and effect on her decisions, highlighting the movie's critique of class disparity. Her transformation from innocence to survival, and eventually to violence, illustrates the transformative potential of horror narratives to explore the darker sides of human nature. Grace's characterization is important, it reflects the movie's larger themes, which include the corruption of wealth, the breaching of moral and social norms, and survival. This study contributes to the field of literary analysis by enriching the understanding of character development, especially in horror narratives.

Abstract

In the context of parenting, the choice of language by parents becomes a critical tool for conveying values, rules, and emotional support to children. This study investigates parental communication preferences for using Indonesian versus Madurese in rural communities and their impact on child-rearing practices. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The method employed is the observation and participation technique, where the researcher observes and records the speech of rural communities related to parenting communication in Indonesian through recording and note-taking techniques. Besides, the researcher uses reflective introspective methods, based on the experiences of both the researcher and the informants. The researcher also conducts interviews with community leaders, linguists, artists, cultural figures, and rural community members. Once the data is collected, the researcher performs data reduction, classification, and validation according to the data type. Subsequently, data tabulation is carried out by coding each data entry listed in tables, followed by data interpretation and conclusion drawing. The research findings indicate a tendency among educated generations to raise their children using the Indonesian language, which is viewed negatively by Generation X. It is because the use of the Madurese language is considered an essential strategy in instilling moral values in children, especially in interactions with older individuals. The use of Indonesian is perceived as potentially distancing children from their cultural roots. Moreover, this study also finds that parental preferences for using the Indonesian language in parenting communication within rural communities encompass elements of nationalism, the role of Indonesian in rural societies, and Indonesian language communication in parenting in rural settings.

Abstract

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects various aspects of a child's development, including language abilities. This study aims to identify and analyze the fluency, articulation, and sentence structure abilities of autistic children at SMAN 1 Glenmore, Banyuwangi Regency. The research employs a qualitative descriptive design. The data in this study consists of words and sentences, with the data sources being autistic students from Class X IPS4 at SMAN 1 Glenmore Banyuwangi. The method used for data collection is the observation-participation method, where the researcher observes the spoken and written expressions of autistic students from Class X IPS4 SMAN 1 Glenmore Banyuwangi through recording and note-taking techniques. Additionally, interviews were conducted with the autistic students, teachers, parents, and the students' peers. After the data was collected, the researcher performed data reduction, classification, verification, tabulation, and coding for each data set. Finally, the researcher interpreted the data and drew conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the expressive language abilities of autistic children are still hindered by several factors, such as fluency in speaking, pronunciation, and unclear articulation, especially in words containing the letters or endings L, N, M, R, T, and NG. Autistic children tend to speak in short phrases and are experience significant challenges in active communication, nor can they convey information clearly. However, Bela Citra Kinanjur (BCK) is able to write independently with simple compositions, although some grammatical errors are still present, such as in the use of articles, spacing, and writing mechanics. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers help build the confidence of autistic students through public speaking activities, writing therapy, and word-building stimulation.
