Abstract

This study provides a contrastive analysis of interjections in the Indonesian and Mandailing Batak languages, focusing on their morphological characteristics. By comparing these two languages, we aim to highlight their similarities and differences in the use and formation of interjections. This analysis is limited to a morphological review to prevent overlap with topics related to verb types and verb formation processes. Utilizing both descriptive qualitative research methodology and comparative-contrast descriptive methodology, we systematically compare the interjection morphology in both languages. The methodologies differ in their application: the descriptive qualitative approach involves detailed observations and descriptions of interjection usage, while the comparative-contrast approach focuses on identifying and analyzing the distinctions and similarities between the languages. The primary data source comprises example sentences created by the researcher, ensuring linguistic acceptability. The researcher's specific tasks include selecting relevant sentences, analyzing their morphological structures, and categorizing the interjections. Data collection encompasses the specific interjection systems of each language, and each grammatical category's realization is examined. Contrasts are drawn based on the analysis outcomes after thorough data collection.

This study is a descriptive qualitative research with a gender performativity approach. The study focuses on the female punk movements in Ujung Berung, Bandung, using participant observation, recording techniques, and interviews with various stakeholders including community leaders and local residents. The researcher observed the resistance and movements of female punks through recording and noting techniques. Additionally, the researcher conducted interviews with female punks, community leaders, and local residents. After the data was collected, the researcher performed data reduction, classification, validation, and coding in tables, followed by interpretation. The research findings indicate three main roles in gender resistance within the punk subculture, they were the role of women in the punk subculture; the expression of identity and gender resistance; and the impact of women's movements within the punk subculture

Abstract

This research examines politeness and impoliteness strategies in the Sundanese language as used on the Ridwan Remin YouTube podcast. Analyzing these strategies provides insights into cultural and social norms, enhances understanding of interpersonal communication within the Sundanese community, and demonstrates how traditional linguistic practices evolve in modern media contexts. As podcast media gains popularity, studying these strategies in this digital format reveals how traditional practices adapt to reflect broader social and cultural changes. This qualitative study utilizes politeness theory by Brown & Levinson (1987) and impoliteness theory by Culpeper (1996), alongside pragmatics, to explore how speakers manage social relationships through language in a podcast setting. The research focuses on the podcast episode "Soleh Solihun: Working with Sincerity (in Sundanese)," uploaded on Ridwan Remin's YouTube channel on May 31, 2021. By analyzing the podcast transcript, the study identifies various politeness and impoliteness strategies used by speakers and evaluates listener responses. This research not only contributes to understanding linguistic strategies in digital communication but also offers implications for future studies on communication practices in evolving digital platforms.

Abstract

Advertisements are a crucial tool for companies to promote their products, utilizing both verbal and visual signs. This study explores the verbal and visual signs in iPhone 14 advertisements, focusing on their denotative and connotative meanings. The research employs observational methods for data collection and qualitative descriptive methods for analysis, drawing on Saussure's (1983) theory for sign description and Barthes' (1967) theory for meaning interpretation. The findings reveal 12 verbal signs, 8 visual signs, 20 denotative meanings, and 16 connotative meanings across two advertisements. The study highlights how advertisers use verbal and visual signs to create distinct concepts and make their products known to the public

Abstract

Nunas nede is a cultural ritual inherited from the ancestors of Kesik Village, Masbagik District, East Lombok. The nunas nede tradition is believed to be an expression of a request for rain and gratitude for the blessings of fertile agricultural land and harvests that have been given to the people of Kesik Village. The nunas nede tradition consists of two core activities, namely ngayu ayu and gawe adat (core event). Each procession in the Nunas nede tradition is a symbol of the beliefs of the people of Kesik Village. These symbols describe the meaning in the Nunas nede tradition. This research was conducted to analyze the meaning of the Nunas nede tradition using Clifford Geertz's symbolic interpretive theory. There are three concepts in Geertz's theory, namely the knowledge or cognitive system (mode of), the value or evaluative system (mode for); and (3) symbol system. These three concepts will produce a system of meaning from the nunas nede tradition. The results of the research show that the symbols in the nunas nede tradition are the begibung symbol meaning establishing ties of friendship and social equality in society, the dulang symbol meaning gratitude, the nyawik symbol meaning maintaining the balance of nature and the spring symbol meaning the source of life. From these symbols, the meaning of the nunas nede tradition is obtained, a request for rain to fall as well as a form of community gratitude which is a link between friendship and strengthening family ties, by working together to maintain the balance of the universe which is the source of life.

Abstract

This experimental study investigates the impact of Project Strategy on the argumentative writing skills of eighth-grade students. The study aims to (1) evaluate the students' writing proficiency using Project Strategy, (2) assess their skills without this strategy, and (3) determine if Project Strategy significantly enhances their writing ability. The population consists of 120 students, with a sample of 60 students selected randomly. Data were collected through essay tests, and a pretest confirmed the groups' homogeneity. The experimental group's mean pretest score was 63.00, while the control group's was 53.50. Post-treatment, the experimental group's mean score improved to 73.33, indicating a good proficiency level, compared to the control group's 63.67, which was deemed adequate. Hypothesis testing showed a significant effect (tcount = 5.110, ttable = 2.002), suggesting that Project Strategy positively influences students' writing abilities. Based on these findings, it is recommended that English teachers adopt innovative strategies to improve writing skills, emphasizing the importance of effective paragraph construction in English education.

The research results indicated a significant improvement in students' proficiency in vocabulary after the use of the Cake program, as shown by a mean pre-test score of 53.67 and a post-test score of 76.00. The paired T-test confirmed this disparity with a significance value of 0.000, suggesting that the enhancement in students' learning outcomes was not a result of chance. The study's findings indicate that using the Cake application is a successful method for enhancing pupils' proficiency in English vocabulary. This program not only improves vocabulary abilities, but also stimulates students' enthusiasm for studying English with its captivating interactive elements. Hence, it is advisable for educators to contemplate using digital tools such as Cake to boost vocabulary acquisition inside the classroom setting.
