Abstract

is study examines textual discourse in the animated movie “Raya and the Last Dragon,” with a focus on grammatical and lexical cohesion to understand how language supports narrative coherence and emotional impact. Although there is substantial research on textual cohesion and discourse patterns in various contexts, there is a notable gap in investigating how animated films, which merge visual and verbal elements, use these linguistic techniques to construct complex narratives. This research addresses this gap by applying Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theoretical framework to analyze how cohesive devices function within the film’s dialogues. Through the descriptive-qualitative method, the research explores cohesive devices to enhance our comprehension of this linguistic phenomenon. Data collection involved meticulously observing the movie and analyzing the data through both formal and informal methods. The analysis revealed 416 instances of grammatical elements, with references being the most frequently used. These references ensure clarity and continuity in dialogues by linking back to previously mentioned characters or objects, thereby keeping the conversation smooth and coherent. In the lexical analysis, 78 instances were identified, with repetition being the most common. Repetition emphasized key themes, strengthened emotional connections, and effectively conveyed the movie's main messages. This study provides new insights into how animated films uniquely employ cohesive devices to enhance storytelling and character development, and contributing to the broader field of textual discourse analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the feminist approach employed in the characterization of Megan Twohey. The data were analyzed using a qualitative method. The data were gathered by using an observation method that was implemented into three approaches: watching the movie on Apple TV, reading the dialogues, and taking notes. The data were noted after watching and analyzing the film and reading the dialogues several times. By applying Murphy's characterization theory, the study identifies key traits such as bravery, intelligence, and unstoppable, which are crucial in depicting a strong, resilient female character. Additionally, using Tong's feminist theory, the research situates these traits within broader feminist discourses, highlighting how the character embodies various aspects of feminist ideologies, including the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated society. This analysis not only underscores the complexity of Megan Twohey's character but also contributes to a deeper understanding of how contemporary films can reflect and promote feminist values by portraying multifaceted female characters.

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital advertising landscape, understanding how semiotic elements function is crucial for creating effective advertisements. A deep understanding of semiotics is essential for grasping how advertisements convey complex meanings to their audiences. While semiotic analysis is commonly applied in advertising, there is still a gap in understanding how signs and messages in digital commercials work together to create meaning. This study explores the interpretation of signs and messages in the Grand Filano YouTube advertisement by applying Saussure's semiotic theory (Lepschy, 1985), (Barthes, 1977), and Wierzbicka’ (1996). The goal is to uncover how these semiotic elements combine to communicate meaningful messages. This research employs a qualitative approach, using direct observation to collect data from the Grand Filano YouTube ad. The data collection involved observing and categorizing written text, slogans, visuals, colors, and non-verbal communication. The findings reveal that the Grand Filano advertisement effectively integrates these components to convey complex messages. The signs carry both denotative and connotative meanings that enhance the ad's impact. For instance, vibrant colors convey energy and confidence, while neutral tones suggest purity and luxury. The study concludes that the combination of signs and messages generates powerful meanings and influences the audience. This research provides practical insights for marketers, highlighting the strategic use of color and symbolism to craft more persuasive and engaging advertisements.

Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a crucial role in making conversations clear and smooth, but their function in stand-up comedy remains underexplored. While previous research has examined DMs in speeches and films, little attention has been given to their use in comedy. This study focuses on cognitive DMs, which reflect thinking processes, elaboration, or self-correction, and analyzes their use in Matt Rife’s stand-up routine. Unlike other DMs, cognitive DMs convey the speaker’s mental state, guide the audience’s comprehension, and signal self-monitoring, all of which are integral to the comedic performance. The descriptive qualitative method was used to examine a popular 2023 stand-up special, focusing on how Rife uses these markers to structure his jokes and connect with the audience. This study found 151 cognitive DMs, categorized into four types: elaboration such as “like”, thinking processes like “um”, Assessment of the listener’s knowledge about utterances like “you know what I mean”, and self-correction “I mean”. The most frequently used marker was “like,” primarily serving the function of elaboration. The study shows that cognitive DMs help with timing, clarifying jokes, and engaging the audience. This research sheds light on how DMs are used in comedy and suggests that further study could improve our understanding of their role in making humor effective and engaging.

Abstract

This paper examines how the use of grammatical cohesion contributes to the coherent of the news discourse in The Jakarta Post reporting on the war between Russia and Ukraine. It identifies and analyzes grammatical cohesion, specifically reference, substitution, and ellipsis, which exist in the news text to bring coherence in the news text. The results revealed the most dominant type of references applied in the text were anaphoric references, and these references are very important to ensure the integrity and readability of the text. The study therefore reveals a lack of substitution because there is the need for precision in war reporting. The insights gained contribute to a deeper understanding of how linguistic devices are employed in the media to build cohesive and coherent narratives, offering valuable implications for both discourse analysis and English language education.

Abstract

TThis study analyzes the types of flouting maxim conveyed by the characters in the movie No Hard Feelings. No Hard Feelings is a movie about a desperate woman who almost loses her house and decides to date a wealthy couple’s son to solve the problem. Flouting maxim occurs when the participant disobeys Grice’s conversational maxims in a conversation. This study used the theory from Grice (1975) concerning the cooperative principle to discover the types of flouting maxims. The types of flouting maxims were collected by qualitative method through an observation of the utterances done by the characters in the movie. This study also used theory from Halliday (1989) to analyze the context of the situation based on the conversation. The result of this study revealed that there are 4 types of flouting maxim found in 25 data, namely flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of manner, and flouting maxim of relevance. The highest flouting maxim in the No Hard Feeling movie is the flouting maxim of quantity because most of the characters added more or less unnecessary information to their statement. The main character disregarded most of the maxim of quantity. The main character flouted the maxim by providing excessive detail to stress the audience hence the character wanted to control the conversation to achieve her goal as a main character. This study focuses on demonstrating the dialogues that were considered flouts in the movie and correlates the flouts with linguistic theory.

Abstract

Compound sentence, as a type of sentence structure, are sometimes considered easy to construct due to their limited range of conjunction options, such as for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so along with punctuation marks, such as semicolons (;) and commas (.) to bridge the clauses. However, the fact of its use is often inappropriate, especially in written form. The primary objective of this study is to identify the construction of coordination used in the compound sentences found in the reviews of The Apurva Kempinski Bali on Agoda.com website. Additionally, the study aims to analyze the constituent structure of each compound sentence using tree diagrams. The data of this study were taken from period of time April until July 2024. The data were analyzed by using the observation method and qualitative descriptive methods. To analyze the types of coordination in compound sentences, this study applied the theory proposed by Quirk and Greenbaum (1973). The constituent structure of each compound sentence was analyzed by using tree diagram theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991). The result of this study show that there are three types of coordination in compound sentence: syndetic coordination, asyndetic coordination, and a combination of both types. Out of 40 data of compound sentences, there are 21 data that contain syndetic coordination, 15 data contain asyndetic coordination, and 4 data contain asyndetic coordination. The dominant type of coordination used is syndetic coordination. However, there is a type in which the sentence construction seems to belong to another type such as syndetic coordination which looks like a combination coordination between syndetic and asyndetic coordination.
