Abstract

This research investigates the use of picture media to improve students’ ability to read and understand descriptive texts. The study addresses three main questions: (a) How is picture media implemented to enhance reading comprehension of descriptive texts? (b) How does picture media improve students’ comprehension of descriptive texts? and (c) How does picture media improve students’ overall reading ability? The participants were 25 seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kodi Utara, Sumba Barat Daya, who were taught using picture-based learning to support comprehension development. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were analyzed using descriptive and statistical techniques. The results show a clear improvement in students’ reading comprehension through the use of picture media. This improvement is reflected in the increase from the pre-test mean score of 1.164 in Cycle I to the post-test mean score of 1.936 in Cycle II. These findings indicate that picture media effectively enhances students’ reading ability in descriptive text learning.

Abstract

The challenge of literacy often serves as a significant barrier for students in accessing knowledge and realizing their full potential. This research stems from a deep concern regarding the low reading comprehension of students at SMP Negeri 3 Lamboya, West Sumba, NTT. The study aims to enhance students’ reading comprehension by using Reciprocal strategy. It is not merely a set of techniques, but an empowering, dialogue-based approach that trains students to assume active roles as critical thinkers and inquirers, focusing on four pillars: Summarizing, Questioning, Clarifying, and Predicting. This study involves 30 students across two cycles, focusing on gradual training and the intentional transfer of discussion leadership from the teacher to the students. The findings reveal a significant and palpable improvement, evident both quantitatively (increased test scores from pre-cycle to Cycle I and Cycle II) and qualitatively (increased student enthusiasm in discussions, greater confidence in asking questions, and the ability to self-monitor comprehension difficulties). The strategy has proven to be effective not only in boosting reading comprehension but also in fostering self-confidence and collaborative skills among the students.

Abstract

This study explores how TikTok can be utilized as a tool for teaching contextual vocabulary in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning and examines students' perceptions of this approach. This descriptive qualitative study employed thematic analysis of interview data collected from twelve first-semester English Department students who were interviewed about their experiences learning vocabulary through TikTok content from “English With Rhys”. The findings reveal that TikTok serves as an effective alternative medium for vocabulary learning, offering accessibility, engagement, and authentic contextual examples. The twelve participants reported increased motivation due to the entertaining and accessible format, and demonstrated an improved understanding of vocabulary usage in authentic contexts. However, challenges include potential distractions from entertainment content and the need for additional strategies like note-taking and repetition for better retention. TikTok demonstrates significant potential as a supplementary tool for contextual vocabulary instruction, complementing rather than replacing formal classroom learning.

Abstract

Understanding the meaning of lyrics in contemporary popular music can be difficult because many expressions carry intentions that exceed their surface definitions. Responding to this issue, this study investigates how literal (lexical) meanings and context-based meanings operate in several tracks from Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox album. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach in which the selected lyrics are examined through semantic classification, comparing dictionary-based meanings with the interpretive shifts that emerge from the surrounding lyrical environment. The analysis indicates that while numerous words retain straightforward lexical senses, their significance frequently expands when considered within the emotional and narrative structure of the songs. For example, in When I Was Your Man, the term man evolves from a simple reference to gender into an indicator of emotional development, regret, and accountability. Similarly, expressions such as heaven and locked out in Locked Out of Heaven evoke symbolic and affective layers not present in their literal meanings. Overall, the study highlights that a comprehensive interpretation of modern song lyrics requires attention to both lexical meaning and the contextual forces that reshape it.

Abstract

This study examines the communication strategy used in the Sampoerna A-Mild cigarette advertisement “Solusi Lo, Masalah Buat Gue” within the context of Indonesia’s strict advertising regulations. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic framework, the research analyzes how visual and verbal signifiers such as urban heat, traffic congestion, and the motorcyclists’ actions are linked to signified meanings including frustration, pragmatism, and individual initiative. The findings show that these signs are intentionally connected through arbitrary associations that construct a narrative of resourcefulness and non-conformity. The slogan “Solusi Lo, Masalah Buat Gue” functions as the central linguistic element that unifies the advertisement’s sign system and contributes to an implied identity distinction between individuals who act creatively and those affected by such actions. The study highlights how the advertisement communicates brand identity indirectly, demonstrating how cigarette companies adapt meaning-making strategies to operate within regulatory constraints. These findings expand the understanding of semiotic mechanisms in regulated advertising and show how arbitrary sign-linking serves as a strategic tool for maintaining brand presence without explicit product depiction.

Abstract

English at the senior secondary school (SMA) level plays a crucial role in helping students develop communication skills and fostering an understanding of the importance of English for enhancing the nation’s competitiveness in the global arena. However, in practice, many students still experience difficulties with vocabulary, as revealed through interviews with the tenth-grade English teacher. Poster images serve as an effective and efficient instructional medium for delivering messages or information to students. By providing visual representations of objects along with their meanings, poster images can support students in expanding their vocabulary. This study aims to describe how the use of poster images improves vocabulary mastery among tenth-grade students at SMA Islam Baitur-Rohmah Malang in 2024. The findings from classroom observations and learning activities indicate an improvement in student performance. The average score in Cycle I was 65.5, increasing to 75.5 in Cycle II. In Cycle I, 15 students (58%) achieved mastery, while 10 students (42%) had not yet met the criteria. In Cycle II, all 25 students (100%) achieved mastery. These results show that all tenth-grade students successfully reached the expected minimum mastery level (>70%) in Cycle II, with the mastery rate increasing to 100%.

Abstract

Speaking ability in English is a core skill that reflects a learner’s overall language proficiency. However, many students still encounter various obstacles when attempting to speak. This study examines the speaking difficulties faced by eighth-grade students at SMP N 2 Waikabubak. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of difficulties students experience and the factors contributing to those challenges. The participants in this study were eighth-grade students and English teachers at SMP N 2 Waikabubak. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation checklists and interviews. Interview responses were gathered from students, and the data were analysed through stages of observation checklist review, transcription, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students’ speaking difficulties stem from two main sources: linguistic and psychological factors. Linguistic barriers include limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and inadequate grammar. Psychological factors involve low self-confidence, shyness, anxiety, and fear of making mistakes.
