Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine the concept of social poverty at local context of two extreme geographically rural and urban areas. The logic of the article is structured as follows. Firstly is the identification social class at urban and rural contexts, in which social poverty is taking place. Then, it is followed by describing shortly the government programs on poverty alleviation, i.e. PNPM, Dana Desa, KAT and Health Insurance, in which trust in government could be built. Theoretical analysis are mainly referring to Weber, Bourdieu, and Putnam. Social capital formation is hindered mostly by closed system of social class in urban context, and by long unresolved isolation in rural context. The implementation of the government programs could be increasing trust in government. But on the other hand, social capital at rural context had declined in its capacity to solve their own problems. The bottom-up and top-down approach in the programs coordinated by the related ministries, gave more space to the poor for participation.

Abstract

This article substantive describes The Theory of Speaking Codes from Gerry Philipsen. Briefly, these include background birth of the theory; the substance of Speaking Code Theory; shape/appearance of ethnography; criticism of the theory; and conclusion. The discussion showed that one of the five core theory is related to the arguments stated in the form of propositions, that “where there is a cultural difference, there will be found different speaking code". From the meaning of ‘postulate referred to’ in relation to a number of example case about the working Theory of Speaking Codes in reality daily life before that, this indicates that for Indonesia this theory can actually be a confirmation and practical guidance for each individual of an Indonesian ethnic community nation in cross-cultural communication in order to make harmonization.

Abstract

This study adopts Market School activities that have been done by volunteers of Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta, on a case study of traditional market empowerment program in 50 districts / cities by 2015. The research has three objectives, namely: (1) to introduce participatory models, (2) to increase knowledge and capacity of trader, and (3) to achieve the impact of Market School. In order to achieve those objectives, the researcher uses the method of action research, specifically Participatory Action Research. This research result shows us that the Market Facilitator has played the role in simplifying the process though some methods of data/issues collection such as in-depth interview, brainstorming and problems prioritizing. In terms of education, Adult Learning Method (ALM) with popular way and attractive package really energized the member of Market School to join actively. The same good process was also noticed from the result of issues collection. Both observation data and issue priority show that physical related problems are the biggest issue, followed by issues related to trader and other problems related to marketing management. This condition indirectly explains that the revitalization on the physical aspects in market bringing significant impact on revitalization for the other aspects.Anyway the impact of the Market School are: (1) The use of various data collection techniques were responded positively by market player, (2) Participants in Market School get new necessary insight and skill that they never get before, such as simple accounting, how to set layout and arrange the goods, marketing management, accessing the capital, and how to run more updated business model such as online business,(3) The relationship between trader and management is getting better and more communicative, and (4) Building a sense of belonging from the trader to the market increases.

Verbal symbols are symbols in the form of words and a series of words (sentences) both spoken and written. Nonverbal symbols are all symbols that are not in the form of words, such as kinesics (body movements), facial expressions and eye gaze. There are various expressions of emotion. There are natural expressions without being bound by culture that are universal, there are contextual ones bound by cultural rules. In addition, although there are universal expressions of human emotions, it is not universal when and in what situations humans express these emotions because it is controlled by local cultural norms.

Abstract

Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) are groups of workers who work abroad. Indonesia as a country that has a large workforce with a majority of low education, has difficulty in providing decent employment in the country, so working abroad is a choice for millions of PMI in an effort to improve and answer life's needs. As a country sending large migrant workers, PMI needs protection relating to their rights and obligations as PMI, both before placement, placement period and post placement. Even though there is a regulation that states that every PMI who wants to work abroad must get knowledge of the country where they work, this facility is considered inadequate to provide PMI abroad.Facilities that are considered very comfortable and easy to protect PMI can be done through social media facilities. Along with the fact that all PMIs have cellular phones, the use of social media is considered to be more effective in reaching more people, cheaper, more convenient, able to access the latest news and easy to share (viral). Just as it is currently done by PMI in Taiwan every time a PMI wants to find and provide information to others PMI.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship between cultural diversity and the potential for cross-cultural conflicts that occur between ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indigenous people in Indonesia. Even though they have been present in the archipelago for thousands of years, the stereotype of the presence of ethnic Chinese is still very strong, namely, with the assumption that they are immigrants who only live here looking for food. Not to mention the prejudice that says that the Chinese are not willing to blend in and tend to be exclusive coupled with the ethnocentric attitude of the indigenous ethnic that the Chinese are a minority group. This study uses a literature study, trying to explain, describe and analyze the conflicts experienced by ethnic Chinese which are collected through books, articles, research results, and relevant written sources. The results of the analysis state that the ethnic Chinese conflict with the Indigenous ethnic group has occurred for a long time. The suspicion factor is the main reason for the conflict. Ethnic Chinese are always the target if there is a conflict, even though the conflict is from another ethnic group. This shows that the existence of ethnic Chinese is still not fully accepted. Cultural diversity is a huge potential for Indonesia if managed properly. For this reason, it is necessary to have empathy, openness, tolerance, respect or differences and develop good cross-cultural communication to avoid misunderstandings.
