Abstract

Mathematics demands high-level thinking skills, especially in problem-solving, and is characterized by systematic and logical reasoning. Beyond cognitive aspects, affective factors such as students’ interest in learning also influence their engagement and success. This study investigates differences in algebraic problem-solving ability based on students' interest levels and explores the relationship between the two variables. A comparative quantitative approach was used with Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric analysis and a correlation test. The sample consisted of 30 seventh-grade students at an MTs in Yogyakarta, grouped into low, medium, and high interest categories. Data were collected through a learning interest questionnaire and an algebra problem-solving test. The Kruskal-Wallis results showed a significance value of 0.135 (>0.05), indicating no significant difference in problem-solving ability among the groups. Similarly, the correlation test revealed no significant relationship between interest and ability. These findings suggest that learning interest does not directly affect students' algebraic problem-solving skills. Future research could explore other factors influencing mathematical problem-solving performance.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a systematic review of the application of Linear Programming (LP) in optimizing educational management. The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), with the literature selection process following the PRISMA framework by reviewing articles from the Scopus database published between 2015 and 2025. The analysis reveals that LP plays a significant role in addressing educational challenges such as class scheduling, resource allocation, and budget management. Moreover, the application of LP also contributes to the development of students’ analytical skills through practical mathematical modeling. The findings indicate that LP not only offers optimization solutions in educational management but also enhances students’ analytical abilities through data-driven decision-making and mathematical modeling. However, the study also identifies several critical gaps, including the lack of LP integration into basic curricula, limitations of models in accounting for social and emotional variables, and challenges in dealing with uncertain data. The study recommends the development of more contextual and integrative LP-based learning models using a multi-criteria approach. The novelty of this research lies in the formulation of a conceptual framework that combines LP with real-world, project-based interdisciplinary learning as a foundation for developing data-driven educational innovations.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of an inquiry-based learning model supported by animated videos on elementary school students’ learning interest and conceptual understanding in mathematics. The background of this research highlights difficulties in mathematical literacy at SDN 4 Pringgabaya, particularly in geometry, which may stem from the conventional teaching methods commonly used. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. A total of 50 fifth-grade students from SDN 4 Pringgabaya participated in the study, divided into two groups: the experimental group, which received inquiry-based learning with animated video support, and the control group, which received conventional instruction. The instruments used were a learning interest questionnaire and a conceptual understanding test, both administered as pretests and posttests. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Independent Samples T-Test or Mann-Whitney U for hypothesis testing, and the N-Gain test to measure improvement. The findings reveal that the inquiry-based learning model with animated video support had a significant effect on students' learning interest (Sig. 0.000 < 0.05). However, the impact on conceptual understanding did not reach statistical significance (Sig. 0.411 > 0.05), likely due to initial differences in student ability between the groups. Nonetheless, the N-Gain analysis showed a medium-to-high improvement in the experimental group (0.6826), while the control group remained in the low category (0.0498). Thus, the model proved effective in increasing students’ interest in learning and had a positive impact on their mathematical conceptual understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mathematical literacy skills of students in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) areas, specifically Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri Tiakur, on the topic of circles, in relation to their level of mathematics anxiety. The main focus is to examine how mathematics anxiety affects students’ abilities to understand, represent, and solve contextual mathematics problems rooted in local culture. This research employs an exploratory method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects consist of six students selected purposively based on categories of high, moderate, and low anxiety. Data were collected through an anxiety questionnaire, a PISA level 3 problem, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis included reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that mathematics anxiety influences student performance in solving contextual problems. Students with high anxiety can still demonstrate reflective and procedural abilities if they possess strong conceptual understanding. Conversely, students with moderate or low anxiety may struggle when lacking reflective and conceptual skills. The study concludes that authentic context-based learning, such as ethnomathematics, and attention to students’ affective aspects are essential to enhance their mathematical literacy, particularly reflective thinking and problem-solving skills

Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ metaphorical thinking skills in the topic of circles. Metaphorical thinking is a higher-order cognitive ability that enables students to relate abstract mathematical concepts to real-life experiences through six thinking stages: Connect, Relate, Explore, Analyze, Transform, and Experience (CREATE). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. Data were collected through observation, written tests on circle material, and semi-structured interviews. The results show that most students were able to connect circle concepts to real-life situations (Connect indicator) and identify relationships among circle elements (Relate indicator). However, some students still faced difficulties in the Explore and Analyze stages, which require deeper conceptual reasoning. The study concludes that metaphorical thinking skills play an essential role in helping students meaningfully and contextually understand circle concepts

Abstract

This study aims to identify students’ difficulties in solving Two-Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) problems in terms of their computational thinking skills and levels of self-confidence. The study incorporates four indicators of computational thinking combined with students’ self-confidence levels to examine their patterns of difficulty more comprehensively. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving two ninth-grade students from MTsN Muaradua who were selected based on the results of a self-confidence questionnaire and a computational thinking test. Data were collected through questionnaires, written tests, and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that students with high self-confidence were able to solve SPLDV problems across all four indicators through logical, reflective, and systematic steps. In contrast, students with low self-confidence experienced difficulties at the abstraction stage and particularly at the generalization stage when required to formulate a general equation from the obtained results. Low self-confidence led to hesitation in connecting relationships between variables and hindered reflective thinking. These findings indicate the need to strengthen affective aspects alongside the development of computational thinking in SPLDV learning.

Abstract

A persistent issue in mathematics education at the elementary level is students’ difficulty in comprehending problems, which consequently leads to low learning outcomes. This study aims to analyze teachers’ and students’ needs as well as their experiences in mathematical problem solving. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, involving 30 student respondents and 12 teacher respondents. Data were collected through a needs analysis questionnaire concerning the learning media currently used. The results indicate that, in general, the preferred learning media include images and videos that can be accessed repeatedly at any time, provide explanations accompanied by examples, have a duration of 5–10 minutes, and incorporate real-life problem contexts. Moreover, the most effective learning process is suggested to employ real-world contexts through the PMRI (Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education) approach. Students’ problem-solving experiences serve as indicators of mathematical competence; however, the stage requiring the most instructional intervention is the implementation phase, particularly in connecting mathematical concepts to everyday life situations. The findings underscore the importance of providing learning media that align with students’ and teachers’ needs and implementing contextual approaches to enhance students’ mathematical competence.

Abstract

This study started from the problem of low interest in learning and lack of understanding of mathematical concepts in elementary school students, especially in the material of circles. To overcome this problem, an inquiry-based learning approach was used which was supported by animated video media. By using an inquiry learning approach assisted by animated videos, this study aims to determine its effect on students' interest in learning and understanding of mathematical concepts. The research activities were carried out in class IV SDN 4 Pringgabaya in the 2024/2025 academic year using a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental design of the nonequivalent control group design type. The research subjects were divided into two groups, each consisting of 26 students, namely the experimental group and the control group. Data were collected through a questionnaire to assess learning interest and a written test to measure understanding of mathematical concepts. Based on the results of the normality test, the data were not normally distributed, so data analysis was carried out using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric test. The results of the analysis showed a significance value of 0.000 for both aspects studied, namely learning interest and conceptual understanding (p <0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. This shows that the use of animated video-assisted inquiry has proven effective in increasing learning interest and understanding of elementary school students' mathematical concepts.
