Abstract

Background: Indonesia's engagement with the ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement (ACIA) is intended to promote regional investment flows and support domestic economic development, especially for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Despite formal compliance, structural and institutional barriers remain, limiting the benefits MSMEs receive. Aims: This study aims to evaluate the extent of Indonesia’s compliance with ACIA through three stages (output, outcome, and impact) and to analyse its influence on MSME development in Indonesia. Methods: A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted, grounded in Ronald B. Mitchell’s compliance theory. Data were obtained from policy documents, academic literature, and official reports. Thematic content analysis was used to assess how formal commitments translate into domestic policy adjustments and real economic impacts for MSMEs. Result: Indonesia has shown formal compliance by ratifying ACIA via Presidential Regulation No. 49/2011. Policy adjustments include initiatives promoting partnerships between foreign investors and local MSMEs. However, the impact remains limited due to poor digital literacy, weak institutional support, and a lack of targeted incentives. Although access to capital and markets has marginally improved, substantial transformation has yet to occur. Conclusion: While Indonesia has formally complied with ACIA and introduced policies to empower MSMEs, the effectiveness of these measures is hindered by systemic weaknesses. The compliance process reflects symbolic and procedural alignment but lacks substantive integration at the grassroots economic level. Future efforts must focus on building institutional capacity, improving MSME readiness, and designing inclusive financing schemes. This study contributes to international regime theory by bridging global policy frameworks with domestic development agendas, positioning MSMEs as critical agents in the global political economy.

Abstract

Background: Employee performance is pivotal in driving organizational success, particularly in highly dynamic sectors such as the automotive industry. Within such environments, interpersonal communication and work motivation are considered essential factors influencing work outcomes. However, practical gaps often arise, leading to underperformance despite theoretically favorable conditions. Aims: This study aims to investigate the effect of interpersonal communication and work motivation on employee performance in the Body Repair Division at Honda Semarang Centre. Methods: A quantitative associative approach was employed, involving a saturated sample of all 30 employees. Data were gathered via a structured questionnaire measured on a Likert scale and analyzed using multiple linear regression. Instrument validity and reliability were confirmed, and classical assumption tests were conducted. Results: Findings reveal that both interpersonal communication and work motivation significantly and positively influence employee performance, both independently and collectively. The model’s coefficient of determination (R²) is 0.949, suggesting that 94.9% of performance variation is explained by these two variables. Descriptive statistics indicate high average scores across all variables with strong internal consistency. Conclusion: This study affirms that fostering open, empathetic, and supportive communication channels, coupled with effective motivational strategies, substantially boosts employee performance. The high explanatory power of the model underscores the strategic value of psychosocial factors in human resource management. These insights not only validate existing theories by Devito and Herzberg but also offer actionable recommendations for practice. Organizations should prioritize interpersonal engagement and incentive systems as integral components of their performance management frameworks, particularly in performance-intensive industries. Sustained investment in these areas is likely to result in improved employee satisfaction, reduced operational frictions, and enhanced organizational productivity.

Abstract

Background: The categorization of women as “good” or “bad” remains deeply embedded in patriarchal values, often perpetuated through family, religion, and social environments. With the rise of digital media, especially platforms like YouTube, adolescents are exposed to alternative representations of womanhood, such as those exemplified by public figure Karin Novilda (Awkarin). These portrayals challenge conventional gender norms and prompt young audiences to reinterpret established social values. Aims: This study explores how teenagers socially construct the concepts of “good” and “bad” women and how these constructions are reflected in their perceptions of Karin Novilda’s online persona. It also seeks to examine the persistence of gender-based double standards in adolescents’ judgments of public figures. Methods: Using a qualitative approach and the constructivist framework of Berger and Luckmann, the study engaged 12 adolescents aged 16–19 through in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was employed to understand how social values are externalized, objectified, and internalized through social interactions and media exposure. Result: Findings reveal that teenagers associate the notion of a “good woman” with obedience, modesty, and conformity to religious and familial values. In contrast, expressive behavior, particularly on social media, is often deemed inappropriate. Despite this, many respondents still consume content from figures like Karin, showing a dissonance between moral judgment and digital engagement. Gender-based double standards were also evident, with women receiving harsher criticism than men for similar behaviors. Conclusion: This study concludes that teenagers’ perceptions are shaped by a dynamic social construction process influenced by traditional norms and digital media. While dominant values still persist, signs of critical reflection and negotiation are emerging among adolescents. These findings underscore the need for integrating critical media literacy and gender education into youth development strategies to foster more equitable perspectives on gender roles.

Abstract

Background: Literature functions not only as a medium of storytelling but also as a reflective space to explore cultural identity. The Madurese culture, though rich in traditions, values, and philosophical depth, is often represented through reductive stereotypes in mainstream narratives. Such portrayals risk eroding the authentic identity of the community. Aims: This study aims to analyse the structural elements of the novel Tanjung Kemarau by Royyan Julian and uncover representations of Madurese cultural identity through the lens of literary anthropology. Methods: Using a qualitative descriptive method and a literary anthropology framework, the novel was examined through its themes, characters, conflicts, settings, symbols, myths, and embedded philosophical values. Data collection included textual analysis and triangulation with ethnographic sources and expert consultations. Results: The findings reveal that Tanjung Kemarau integrates Madurese cultural elements, such as the value hierarchy of bhuppa', bhâbhu', ghuru, rato, the honour-bound principle potèa tolang è tembhâng potè mata, and community rituals like petik laut and matchmaking. Characters and settings illustrate tensions between traditional values and modern social dynamics. Myths and legends embedded in the narrative reflect a syncretic worldview rooted in ancestral wisdom. Conclusion: Tanjung Kemarau serves as more than a fictional narrative; it becomes a cultural archive that documents, critiques, and symbolically reconstructs Madurese identity. The novel validates literature’s potential as an ethnographic medium to reveal complex social realities and challenge dominant cultural discourses. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the study contributes to cultural preservation and supports culturally responsive literary education in a multicultural context.

Abstract

Background: Local traditions play a crucial role in maintaining the cultural identity of coastal communities. One such tradition is maccera tasi', a maritime ritual practiced by fishermen in Carede, Palopo City. Although rich in symbolic and spiritual meaning, this tradition has not been conducted since 2017, raising concerns over cultural sustainability. Aims: This study aims to explore the cultural meaning embedded in the maccera tasi' tradition and to investigate the socio-cultural reasons behind its cessation. Methods: Employing a descriptive qualitative design, this research utilized communication anthropology and ethnological approaches. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving 15 informants from diverse stakeholder groups, including fishermen, traditional leaders, and cultural officials. Results: Findings revealed that maccera tasi' is perceived as an expression of gratitude, spiritual devotion, and social solidarity. Its discontinuation is attributed to shifting religious perspectives, lack of government support, and the impact of modernization. The tradition still resonates with the community’s collective memory, though younger generations increasingly question its relevance. Conclusion: The study highlights that maccera tasi' embodies more than ritual—it is a medium for symbolic communication, identity negotiation, and community cohesion. Its demise reflects broader societal transformations, particularly the friction between ancestral customs and evolving Islamic values. However, the potential for revitalization remains, provided there is collaborative effort from local stakeholders to repackage the tradition into a culturally appropriate and religiously acceptable format. Theoretically, the study contributes to communication anthropology by demonstrating how traditional symbols are not only preserved but reinterpreted in response to changing contexts. Practically, it urges inclusive cultural policy interventions to safeguard intangible heritage through adaptive, participatory, and context-sensitive strategies.

Abstract

Background:The development of coastal infrastructure such as breakwaters is often considered a technical solution to overcome the problem of sea waves, but its impact on the social dynamics of coastal communities, especially the division of labor and economic roles in fishing households, has rarely been studied in depth. Aims:This study aims to reveal how livelihood diversification becomes an adaptation strategy for the Njar Kulon fishing community, Kranji Village, in responding to changes in infrastructure, and how these changes affect gender roles in the family. Methods:This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Data were obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of two fishing families as the main informants, as well as several supporting informants. The analysis was conducted using a domain and taxonomy approach based on the concept of material diagnostics and gender as performance. Result:The results of the study show that the construction of the brook limits women's access to the sea and encourages them to move to informal jobs on land. This change shifts women's economic role to be more dominant in the household, especially during the lean season. Diversifying livelihoods becomes a survival strategy taken by all family members. Conclusion:Physical infrastructure has complex social impacts, including the restructuring of gender roles in fishing families. Therefore, development planning in coastal areas needs to consider social aspects and involve community participation, especially women, so that development is responsive and sustainable.

This tradition contains the values of gratitude, spiritual protection, friendship, and almsgiving. The processions carried out included Qur'an sermons, tumpeng carnivals, joint prayers, istighosah, and people's markets. This tradition not only survives but also adapts to the social dynamics of modern society. Conclusion: The Rebo Wekasan tradition remains the cultural and spiritual binder of the people of the Holy Village. It becomes a meaningful space for social interaction and the preservation of local wisdom values across generations. Its sustainability proves that cultural traditions can survive and adapt in the midst of changing times.

Abstract

Background: The development of social media as a digital public space has changed the way individuals express opinions, including in the form of criticism. However, not all criticisms submitted meet the rules of communication ethics, thus giving rise to the phenomenon of offensive and unconstructive comments. Aims: This study aims to find out how Communication Science students of the University of Medan Area perceive the ethics of criticism on Instagram social media, especially on @Medantalk accounts which are often a public discussion space. Methods: This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with interview and observation methods. Informants were selected by purposive sampling from active students who use Instagram. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis techniques. Result: The results of the study show that most students have a negative perception of the practice of criticism on social media today. They assessed that many comments were not delivered politely, were not objective, and often contained hate speech. Conclusion: This perception shows the need to increase ethics-based digital literacy among students. In addition, learning digital communication ethics needs to be strengthened so that social media can become a healthy and constructive space for criticism.

Abstract

Background: The issue of banning puppets by Ustadz Khalid Basallamah in his lecture in early 2022 triggered public controversy and became the main spotlight in various media. Puppets, which have been known as a cultural da'wah media, are suddenly questioned from the perspective of religious law, thus giving rise to a debate between traditional values and Islamic interpretation. Online media such as Republika.co.id and Detik.com are the main channels in framing this issue. Aims: This study aims to analyze how the framing of news is carried out by Republika.co.id and Detik.com on the issue of wayang ban by Ustadz Khalid Basallamah, as well as reveal the difference in perspectives between the two in compiling media narratives Methods: This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the Framing analysis model of Zhondang Pan & Gerald M. Konsicki, which includes four text structures: syntactic, scripted, thematic, and rhetorical. Data were obtained from news articles in both media during February 2022 and analyzed based on the textual elements that shape the way the media frames reality. Result: The results of the study show that Republika.co.id frame the issue with a moderate Islamic approach, support local culture-based da'wah, and display a peaceful and harmonious narrative. Instead, Detik.com highlights controversial aspects by featuring public figures' responses and political-legal narratives. These differences show how ideology and reader segmentation affect news framing. Conclusion: The media has an active role in shaping public perception of religious and cultural issues through framing strategies tailored to their identities and interests. Therefore, media literacy is important so that the public can respond to news critically and objectively.
