Abstract

The rapid transformation of modern society driven by technological advancement, globalisation, and socio-cultural change has generated significant challenges for Islamic education, particularly in addressing moral decline, spiritual alienation, and the dehumanisation of educational practices. This study aims to analyse the concepts of moral and spiritual education in the thought of Buya Hamka and examine their relevance to contemporary Islamic education. The research employs a qualitative library research approach using philosophical hermeneutics as the primary analytical framework. Primary data were derived from Hamka’s major works, including Tasawuf Modern, Lembaga Budi, Pribadi Hebat, and Tafsir al-Azhar, while secondary data were obtained from scholarly books, journal articles, and related academic studies. Data were analysed through content analysis and contextual interpretation to identify the fundamental principles and educational implications of Hamka’s ideas. The findings reveal that Hamka’s educational philosophy is founded upon an integrative paradigm that harmonises intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions. Moral education is centred on character formation through value internalisation, exemplary conduct, and ethical habituation, while spiritual education emphasises the strengthening of faith, worship, self-control, and inner purification through the framework of modern Sufism. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated examination of morality and spirituality as a unified epistemological foundation of Islamic education. The study concludes that Hamka’s thought offers a relevant and transformative educational paradigm capable of addressing contemporary moral and spiritual crises while promoting holistic human development based on religious humanism and Islamic values.

Abstract

The social transformation of the 21st century marked by globalisation, digitalisation, artificial intelligence disruption, and deepening moral crisis demands a fundamental reconstruction of Islamic educational paradigms. Despite the growing body of research on Islamic education, the integration of Prophetic Social Science (Ilmu Sosial Profetik) as a philosophical foundation for Islamic educational transformation remains underexplored. This study aims to analyse and reconstruct Kuntowijoyo’s thought on Prophetic Social Science as a philosophical basis for developing Islamic education oriented towards social transformation in contemporary society. Employing a qualitative library research design with conceptual analysis and critical hermeneutics as its analytical framework, this study systematically examines primary sources from Kuntowijoyo’s major works alongside peer-reviewed international literature. The findings reveal that the three pillars of humanisation, liberation, and transcendence constitute a coherent and operationalisable framework for Islamic educational transformation. Humanisation strengthens human dignity and social consciousness against dehumanisation; liberation builds critical awareness towards structural injustice; and transcendence provides ethical and spiritual grounding in navigating the dynamics of digital society. The novelty of this study lies in the development of the Transformative Prophetic Islamic Education (TPIE) model  a conceptual framework that systematically integrates these three dimensions into a unified paradigm for individual formation, social transformation, and 21st-century civilisational development. Unlike existing approaches that treat these dimensions separately, the TPIE model offers a comprehensive synthesis that bridges normative Islamic values with emancipatory social praxis. Theoretically, this study expands the discourse of Islamic educational philosophy by integrating the Prophetic Social Science paradigm with critical pedagogy, transformative learning theory, and social transformation theory. Practically, it provides an actionable conceptual framework for developing Islamic educational policies, curricula, and pedagogical practices that are more humanistic, emancipatory, and oriented towards sustainable civilisational development.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of overprotective parenting and its implications for students' character development in the modern era through a literature review. The study is motivated by the increasing tendency of parents to provide excessive protection due to concerns about children's safety, academic achievement, and future success. Using a qualitative approach with library research, this study synthesizes recent empirical findings and theoretical perspectives on overprotective parenting, helicopter parenting, and character education. The analysis reveals that overprotective parenting is characterized by excessive parental control, intensive intervention, restricted autonomy, and dominance in children's decision-making processes. Although intended to protect children, such parenting practices may inhibit the development of essential character traits, including independence, responsibility, resilience, decision-making ability, and social competence. The study further identifies several contributing factors to overprotective parenting, including parental anxiety, perceptions of environmental threats, social pressure, digital media influence, and uncertainty in modern society. To address these challenges, the study proposes balanced parenting, guided autonomy, responsibility-based learning, parent–teacher collaboration, and parenting literacy as strategies to strengthen students' character. The findings contribute to the literature on parenting and character education by emphasizing the importance of balancing parental protection with children's opportunities to develop autonomy and resilience.

Abstract

This study discusses the role of Islamic education in supporting the mental health of Generation Z in the digital era. Generation Z faces various psychological pressures, such as anxiety, overthinking, academic pressure, cyberbullying, identity crises, and the influence of social media. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach through an examination of various relevant scholarly sources. The findings show that Islamic education plays an important role in strengthening spirituality, building resilience, and improving students’ psychological well-being. Islamic values such as patience, gratitude, reliance on Allah, remembrance of Allah, prayer, self-reflection, and moral development can help Generation Z manage emotions, find meaning in life, and face pressure in a more positive way. In addition, Islamic education can also serve as an ethical guideline in the use of technology and social media. Thus, Islamic education functions not only as religious learning but also as a holistic approach to maintaining the mental health of Generation Z.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has influenced nearly every aspect of life, including Islamic education and the character formation of students. The emergence of social media, digital platforms, and the highly open flow of information has brought positive impacts, such as easier access to knowledge. However, it has also given rise to various moral issues, including cyberbullying, the spread of misinformation (hoaxes), hate speech, and the decline of communication ethics in digital spaces. This situation requires Islamic education to adopt more adaptive approaches so that religious values can continue to be effectively internalised among the younger generation. This study aims to examine the challenges of Islamic character education in the digital era, analyse strategies that can be implemented, and identify learning innovations that are relevant to modern technological developments. The research employs a qualitative approach using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method through the collection, selection, and analysis of various scholarly works related to Islamic character education and the digitalisation of education. The findings indicate that Islamic character education requires the integration of religious value reinforcement and digital literacy to enable students to use technology wisely, critically, and responsibly. Furthermore, the use of interactive learning media, blended learning approaches, and educational social media platforms is considered effective in enhancing the internalisation of moral and spiritual values. Therefore, Islamic character education plays a crucial role in shaping a generation that is not only technologically competent but also possesses moral integrity, spiritual awareness, and social responsibility amid the ongoing development of digital society.

Abstract

This study aims to explore teacher innovation in fostering students' love for the school environment through classroom cleanliness programs at SD Assunniyyah Kencong. A clean and comfortable school environment is a crucial element in creating a conducive learning atmosphere while shaping environmental awareness from an early age. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation and in-depth interviews. The results indicate that the teacher's role is vital in increasing student awareness through various innovations, such as creative class duty programs, cleanliness competitions, award systems, clean living practices, and the integration of environmental education into the curriculum. These innovations are proven effective in increasing student engagement in maintaining cleanliness and fostering a sense of belonging to the school. Program success is supported by active collaboration between teachers, students, and the school, despite challenges regarding low student awareness and limited facilities. It is concluded that teacher creativity is the determining factor in developing environmentally conscious characters in elementary students. This initiative must be implemented continuously with the support of all school members so that a culture of cleanliness becomes deeply ingrained in the students' character. Well-planned teacher innovation significantly influences the creation of a clean, healthy, and sustainable learning environment for the students' future.

Abstract

Contemporary Muslim societies face political transformation involving democracy, citizenship, religious authority, state power, and public ethics. Debates on Islamic politics often remain polarized between formalistic legalism and secular exclusion, making contextual reconstruction necessary. This study aims to formulate a renewed framework of Islamic political thought that connects classical Islamic principles with contemporary civic realities. This research used a qualitative conceptual design with a library research approach. Data were taken from recent peer-reviewed literature on Islamic political thought, maqasid, democracy, citizenship, governance, and public reason. Data collection was conducted through documentation, source selection, thematic classification, and critical reading. Data were analyzed through conceptual analysis and philosophical-hermeneutical interpretation to build a contextual model of Islamic political reasoning. The main finding shows that Islamic political thought needs to move from state-centric legalism toward an ethical-deliberative paradigm based on justice, welfare, plural citizenship, accountability, and non-coercive morality. The study concludes that Islamic political concepts remain relevant when reinterpreted through maqasid-oriented reasoning, democratic participation, and sensitivity to contemporary realities. This article contributes a conceptual model for developing Islamic political discourse that is ethical, inclusive, democratic, and responsive to modern public life.

Abstract

This conceptual article reconstructs Islamic governance through maqasid al-Shariah by shifting the focus from formal compliance to public value, institutional trust, and measurable maslahah. Contemporary governance in Muslim societies is often trapped between procedural modernity and symbolic religiosity: institutions may display Islamic labels while policy design, accountability, and public welfare remain weak. The study therefore asks how maqasid al-Shariah can be translated into a practical governance framework for law, policy, finance, and public administration. Using an integrative literature review and maqasidi hermeneutic analysis, this article synthesizes recent studies published between 2021 and 2026. The analysis identifies four findings. First, Islamic governance requires a normative anchor that joins tawhid, amanah, justice, shura, and ihsan with contemporary principles of transparency, participation, and evidence-based policy. Second, maqasid must be operationalized as indicators of protection, empowerment, and flourishing, not merely as abstract legal objectives. Third, a reconstructed model should connect rule legitimacy, institutional capability, ethical leadership, and public accountability. Fourth, the maqasid approach expands governance evaluation beyond economic growth toward human dignity, social justice, environmental stewardship, and intergenerational welfare. The article contributes a maqasid governance matrix and an implementation cycle that can guide future empirical research and policy evaluation in Muslim-majority and minority contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the evolution of Islamic political authority from the caliphal ideal to the modern nation-state. The study argues that the transformation was not a simple decline from religious unity to secular fragmentation, but a layered shift in legitimacy, territory, law, citizenship, and institutional capacity. The caliphate historically functioned as a symbol of universal Muslim unity, yet practical authority was often mediated by dynastic rule, scholarly jurisprudence, imperial administration, and local political arrangements. The rise of colonial borders, constitutionalism, international law, and bureaucratic statehood reshaped Islamic authority into territorial forms governed by citizenship and public institutions. Using a qualitative conceptual-historical method, the article synthesizes recent scholarship on political authority, Islamic governance, state legitimacy, constitutionalism, and post-Ottoman political imagination. The findings show four patterns: the symbolic persistence of the caliphate, the territorial consolidation of the nation-state, the constitutional translation of Islamic norms, and the pluralization of religious-political authority. The discussion demonstrates that contemporary Islamic governance should not be reduced to restoring a single caliphal structure; rather, it requires ethical reconstruction within nation-state realities through justice, consultation, public welfare, accountability, and protection of citizenship. The article contributes a conceptual model for studying post-caliphal authority and offers implications for Islamic political thought, public policy, and future empirical research in Muslim-majority societies.

Abstract

The growing complexity of contemporary governance has renewed scholarly interest in reconstructing Islamic political thought as a normative framework for modern political and administrative challenges. Although previous studies have widely discussed Islamic governance, maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, and political reform, limited attention has been given to reconstructing the epistemological foundations of classical Islamic political thought into an integrated model for contemporary governance. This study aims to reconstruct those foundations and examine their contribution to accountable, participatory, and ethical governance in Muslim societies. Using qualitative library research with historical-philosophical and conceptual approaches, this study analyzes classical Islamic political literature and contemporary scholarship through documentary research. Data were examined using qualitative content analysis, thematic analysis, and constant comparative analysis. The findings show that Islamic political epistemology is built upon six interconnected sources of knowledge: the Qur’an, Sunnah, ijmā‘, qiyās, ijtihād, and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. These principles can be transformed into a governance-oriented framework emphasizing accountability, participation, ethical leadership, transparency, and public welfare. The study argues that contemporary Islamic political epistemology is a dynamic knowledge system capable of integrating Islamic intellectual heritage with modern governance principles. Its novelty lies in proposing an integrated epistemological model that bridges classical Islamic political thought and contemporary governance theory.
