Abstract

The integration of Javanese wedding customs into Islamic religious education is an intriguing topic to investigate, particularly within multicultural communities on the slopes of Mount Bromo. This study aims to describe how Islamic educational values are integrated into Javanese wedding practices and to explain the mechanisms through which Islamic meanings are reinterpreted in each stage of the ceremony. The study contributes to discussions on cultural and religious acculturation in the context of values education. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with an ethnographic method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation to understand the symbols, meanings, and practices embedded in wedding rituals. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis technique (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification), complemented by thematic coding to identify patterns of meaning and forms of value integration. The findings indicate that traditions such as siraman, seserahan, sungkeman, and sepasar undergo a process of reinterpreting Islamic meanings through mechanisms of demystification, re-theologization, and values education without eliminating the essence of local culture. This integration not only demonstrates harmony between Islamic principles and local wisdom but also functions as a contextual medium for moral, social, and spiritual values education. The study concludes that tradition is not an obstacle to religious practice; rather, it serves as a strategic avenue for transforming Islamic values through living cultural expressions that are accepted by the community.

Abstract

Despite the growing emphasis on gender equality in Islamic education, limited research has examined how students from migrant worker families respond to the internalization of Mubadalah values. This study aims to examine the forms of resistance demonstrated by students who are children of migrant workers. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, the research was conducted in four Islamic educational institutions located in Jember, East Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the interactive model of data analysis. The findings reveal that students exhibit two forms of resistance: overt resistance and covert resistance toward gender equality practices. Overt resistance is manifested in the rejection of domestic tasks perceived as incompatible with traditional gender roles, while covert resistance appears in the form of avoidance, lack of enthusiasm, and passive participation. In conclusion, resistance to the internalization of Mubadalah values emerges from the interaction between educational interventions and the socio-cultural backgrounds of students. Therefore, pedagogical strategies that are context-sensitive are required, integrating gender equality values with students’ lived experiences and family norms. This study contributes to the advancement of Islamic education scholarship and offers practical recommendations for strengthening gender equality education in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This study examines how integrating digital literacy within Islamic education strengthens character education outcomes at SMP Unismuh Makassar, Indonesia, and Phatnawitya School, Thailand. A convergent mixed-methods design guided by the Stake Countenance Model was used to evaluate antecedents, transactions, and outcomes. Quantitative data were collected from 230 students through a 25-item Likert-scale survey measuring digital literacy, Islamic education mastery as a moral-cognitive outcome, and learning habits/self-regulation as a moral-behavioural outcome. Qualitative evidence was obtained from classroom observations, teacher interviews, school documents, and student reflective journals. The findings show that Makassar students scored higher on mastery (M = 85.27) and learning habits (M = 81.44) than students in Thailand (M = 77.86 and M = 74.32). Institutional context significantly affected the combined outcomes (Wilks' Lambda = 0.621, F = 52.883, p < 0.001), explaining variance in mastery (R² = 0.412) and learning habits (R² = 0.268). Digital literacy predicted both mastery (β = 0.721, p < 0.001) and learning habits/self-regulation (β = 0.387, p < 0.001). Qualitative findings indicate that digital projects supported value internalization in Indonesia, while teacher-led ethical reflection strengthened adab, tolerance, and respectful communication in Thailand. The study concludes that digital literacy can strengthen character education when it is embedded in Islamic ethical guidance, institutional policy, teacher mediation, and repeated behavioural reinforcement.

Abstract

Discrimination against religious minorities in educational institutions is a global issue that undermines the principles of a love-based curriculum and ecotheology promoted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. This article investigates the typology of resistance enacted by Shia minority students within Islamic Religious Education classes and youth organizations. Employing a retrospective narrative inquiry, the study explores the past experiences of five Shia minority students regarding their resistance in these educational settings at both school and university levels. To ensure research ethics and protect the confidentiality of individuals from marginalized minority groups, all participant identities and educational institution names are presented using pseudonyms. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling and interviewed using the life story interview method. Field data were analyzed using the resistance theories of Solorzano & Villalpando, Solorzano & Bernal, and McFarland, as well as thematic analysis techniques from Braun and Clarke. The findings indicate that Shia minority students engaged in three forms of resistance: covert, passive, and conformist. This article contributes new insights to the scholarship on Islamic Religious Education and expands understanding of Muslim minority students' resistance, including resistance within educational institutions.

Abstract

This study examines curriculum instability and its implications for the future of Islamic education in Indonesia through a comparative analysis of the decentralized educational governance system in the United States. The study aims to analyze how centralized curriculum policies and repeated educational reforms affect the sustainability, adaptability, and institutional resilience of Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. This research employed a qualitative approach using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. A total of 77 scholarly references published between 2019 and 2026 were analyzed using the PRISMA framework and thematic analysis. The review focused on curriculum instability, centralized governance, Islamic educational transformation, and decentralized educational systems. The findings reveal that curriculum instability in Indonesia reflects a structural governance problem characterized by policy discontinuity, centralized decision-making, and fragmented educational implementation. These conditions create significant challenges for pesantren, madrasahs, and Islamic schools in maintaining institutional sustainability and educational identity. In contrast, the decentralized educational governance system in the United States demonstrates how institutional autonomy, adaptive policymaking, and contextual flexibility may strengthen educational resilience and curriculum sustainability. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of curriculum instability, comparative educational governance, and Islamic educational transformation within a single analytical framework. This study contributes theoretically by positioning curriculum instability as a governance-based issue affecting the future sustainability of Islamic education. Practically, the findings offer strategic insights for reconstructing adaptive, collaborative, and future-oriented Islamic educational governance in Indonesia.

Abstract

The digital era has brought fundamental changes to educational practices, including the teaching of fiqh as a core component of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). This article presents a systematic literature review on the transformation of fiqh learning in the digital age, with a particular focus on the integration of religious moderation values and the strengthening of Islamic legal literacy. The study employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method using the PRISMA protocol, identifying 28,794 articles from various academic databases. Following a multi-stage screening process conducted independently by two reviewers, with inter-rater agreement measured by Cohen’s Kappa (κ = 0.82), a total of 50 articles met the inclusion criteria for in-depth analysis. Methodological quality assessment was performed using the CASP checklist adapted for review studies. The findings indicate that digital platforms significantly enhance student engagement, critical thinking, and religious literacy. The integration of religious moderation values into the PAI curriculum has proven effective in fostering inclusive attitudes and countering radicalism. This article recommends a holistic approach that combines curriculum reform, continuous professional development for teachers, and contextual technological innovations grounded in Sharia-based values.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the forms of Population Alert School (Sekolah Siaga Kependudukan/SSK) actualization through Islamic Religious Education at SMAN 1 Bonjol, Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with an Islamic Religious Education teacher, an SSK committee member, and three twelfth-grade students, while secondary data were obtained from relevant scientific literature and school documents. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data validity was strengthened through source triangulation, brief member checking, and audit trail documentation. The findings show that SSK actualization through Islamic Religious Education appears through curricular alignment, contextual learning, school habituation, and early student value awareness. SSK values are integrated into Islamic Religious Education through topics such as morality, responsibility, healthy social interaction, quality family formation, future planning, and environmental awareness. The novelty of this study lies in its case-based explanation of how population-related values are translated into Islamic Religious Education learning, school religious culture, and students’ everyday moral awareness. This study recommends strengthening SSK socialization and mapping SSK values into Islamic Religious Education teaching documents.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze digital literacy as a new paradigm of Islamic education in the era of globalization at Salafiyah-Syafi’iyah Sukorejo Islamic Boarding School. The rapid development of information and communication technology has encouraged Islamic educational institutions to transform their learning processes while maintaining Islamic values and the long-established traditions of pesantren. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with pesantren administrators, teachers, and students, as well as document analysis. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and thematic conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that digital literacy has become an essential component in developing students’ competencies through the utilization of digital media, online learning platforms, and access to technology-based Islamic knowledge resources. The implementation of digital literacy not only enhances students’ academic abilities but also strengthens critical thinking skills, information evaluation capabilities, and digital ethics in accordance with Islamic values. However, challenges remain, including disparities in digital competencies, the need for effective technology supervision, and the risk of exposure to unreliable information. The study implies the necessity of developing an integrative Islamic education model that combines pesantren traditions, digital literacy, and Islamic character development to sustainably respond to the challenges of globalization.
