Abstract

This study describes the lexicon on woven bamboo in Tigawasa Village, Buleleng in an ecolinguistic perspective. The purpose of this study is to classify the lexicon on woven bamboo in Tigawasa Village and describe the existence of the lexicon. The method used to examine this research is qualitative with ecolinguistic theory. The results of the study found that there was a decrease in the level of knowledge of some people, especially the younger generation about the woven bamboo lexicon in Tigawasa Village. The percentage of the presence of this lexicon is higher indicated by seniors. This is due to 1) changes in the environment and economic activities 2) the process of transmitting the lexicon from the elderly or parents is still lacking due to the influence of the times 3) The use of Balinese and Indonesian languages.

Abstract

Cepuk cloth has been produced since the 1920s in Tanglad Village, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung Regency, Bali and it has a distinctive motif, different from other clothes produced in the other regencies in Bali. This study tries to identify the lexicons related to cepuk cloth found in the previous research since there have been several research reports on cepuk cloth from 1925. Besides, it also aims to describe the relation between the lexicon and its culture. The data were taken from the previous research concerning cepuk cloth, and they were collected through the observation and documentation methods. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and the analysis is presented using both formal and informal methods. The results show that there are 66 lexicons related to cepuk cloth categorized into eight, namely characteristic, use, type, motif/pattern, ideology, natural coloring resource, concept of color, and traditional weaving machine. Most of the lexicons are related to flora. There are five categories i.e. cepuk characteristics, uses, motif/pattern, ideology, and color concept that are closely related to Balinese Hindu culture. The lexicons related to culture show the symbolic ecology that investigates the coexistence of languages as symbol systems in Nusa Penida, and the sociocultural ecology that sees language as its part where it then shapes societies and cultures.

Abstract

This article examines the connection between Dérsanä Rufaýel and the healing methods evident in EOTC tradition and liturgy. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate Dérsanä Rufaýel's impact on the healing of illnesses and other related issues. The author's content analysis from the majority of his doctoral dissertation serves as the study's primary source. In addition to Dérsanä Rufaýel, intertextual analysis has also received attention, encompassing other important texts such as the Book of Enoch and the Déggwa of Saint Yared. In certain regions of Ethiopia, the study also involves the indirect monitoring of healing services conducted in certain St. Raphael's churches. According to the research, one of the easily accessible liturgical books on the theme of healing in the EOTC is Raphael's Homily. It is also mentioned in Mäséhäfä Sénksar throughout the yearly and monthly festivities. Therefore, healing is primarily associated with devotion to the magnificent archangel Rufaýel. The EOTC's devout pilgrims commemorate the days of the archangel and use the holy water to cure themselves of illnesses and other issues. Insofar as it opens up new avenues for study across the humanities, the relationship between ancient literature and modern considerations is fascinating.

Abstract

Language acquisition is a process of absorption and mastery of language that occurs naturally in children. During the developmental period of language acquisition, children require beneficial stimulation to optimally develop their language skills. Typically, this stimulation comes from parents, who are their closest caregivers. This research focuses on language acquisition in a 3-year-old child cared for by working mothers. It aims to identify and describe the types of sentence structures acquired and mastered by the child, as well as the factors influencing the child's first language acquisition, particularly in relation to parenting styles from a working mother’s perspective. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive method. The subject of the study is a female child aged 3 years and 6 months. The data required includes primary data obtained from observations and secondary data collected from interviews with individuals living in the child’s family environment and among neighbors. The results show that the research subject, Claudia (a pseudonym), who is 3 years and 6 months old, has mastered four types of sentence structures: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. Although the structures of these sentence modes are not perfect, Claudia's performance in producing them at her age is quite commendable. The observations and interviews reveal three main factors contributing to her speaking skills: social and family environmental factors, cognitive intelligence, and motivational factors.

Abstract

This paper aims at describing the multimodal discourse analysis of linguistic form and images in the “Explore Flores: Komodo Island” video. The study focuses on the ideational meaning and representational meaning of spoken texts and visual modes. This is a qualitative study that uses the Systemic Functional-Multimodal Discourse Analysis approach. The researchers gathered the information by capturing some shots of “Explore Flores: Komodo Island” video. The results showed that the “Explore Flores: Komodo Island” video is a video made by an individual private party that has both promotional and persuasive value. Based on the results of the ideational meaning analysis, the appearance of the participant as a dominant carrier indicates the clarity and firmness of the persuasive meaning of the video maker to protect the sea around Komodo island tourist spots. Representational meaning is explained through conceptual meaning and narrative meaning. Based on the conceptual meaning, the video describes the symbolic icons of the tourism spots in Komodo Island, Flores including its Komodo Dragons, the ocean, the sunset seen from Komodo Island and other magnificent natural scenery. Based on the narrative representation, action and reactional process dominate the promotional video. Action process is presented in various activities shown by the park guard and the visitors, meanwhile reactional process is shown by smile on the face of the children and woman who are visiting the Komodo Island to show happiness of being in the tourism spot. The study contributes significantly to the theory of multimodal discourse analysis viewed from the phenomena of spoken text and visual modes.

Abstract

This study investigated the preliminary step of language acquisition, which is language recognition, from translator of English and Indonesian language. It departed from the assumption that every bilingual speaker has/own the capability to do translation, albeit with different methods and through different processes subjectively. Through conducting experiment on translator, the level of language recognition of English and Indonesian translator along with any factors that can affect this level can be discovered. This study mainly aimed at discovering (1) the level of language recognition on translator of English and Indonesian language, as well as (2) other relevant factors that can affect the level of language recognition. The use of quantitative method through experimental linguistics was done to lecturers of English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, using 10 trials of each language. The results showed was analyzed quantitatively based on the primary variables in language recognition of general translation on English and Indonesian. Generally, the level of language recognition is very dependent on visual recognition through phonological and conceptual representation. Moreover, several factors, such as age and sex, can also affect this language recognition level.

Abstract

In today's digital era, the expansion of language has been rapidly developing, allowing the representation of a word to shift or even for the meaning of that language to change. Moreover, in a language, the concepts of open and closed word classes are recognized, where open word classes are those that will continuously change and expand, while closed word classes are those that are unlikely to ever change or grow. Currently, among young people, the term "The Nuruls" has become popular. This term is derived from the concept of a person's name, even though linguistically, the word "Nurul" comes from Arabic, meaning "Light." Interestingly, the word "Nurul" is preceded by the article "the," which originates from English. The combination of morphemes "the" and "Nurul" creates a unique meaning among young people, indicating a significant shift in meaning. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to examine the semantic shift observed in the phrase "The Nuruls" and to identify the markers that represent this phrase. This study employs a semiotic approach to explore the meaning shift in the phrase "The Nuruls." The research uses a descriptive qualitative method, which is employed to describe the data descriptively, and the analysis will also be presented in a descriptive manner.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze language errors in posts and comments on Lambe Turah's Instagram account in 2022. This study uses the theory of language errors related to word structure proposed by Ghufron as a theoretical basis. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, which focuses on the analysis of data collected from the comments column on the Lambe Turah account. Data collection was carried out using the read and note method, where researchers actively read and recorded various language errors found in user comments. The main data source for this study came from various comments posted on the account during 2022. The results of the study showed that there were 37 forms of language errors identified, including errors in basic words, prefixes, clitics, reduplication, acronymization, and prepositions. This general study provides an overview of the extent of language errors that occur in communication on social media, especially on platforms like Instagram, and how variations in these forms of errors can be verified and analyzed based on linguistic theory. These findings are expected to contribute to further research in the field of linguistics, especially related to language phenomena on social media.
