Abstract

Comics, as a medium for conveying ideas and concepts through imagery, integrate textual and visual elements to construct meaning and communicate messages effectively. Their distinctive visual communication enables the delivery of complex social issues in an accessible manner through characters, panels, layouts, and visual representations of sound and dialogue. This study analyzes the Tahilalats comic (2024 edition), which incorporates the hashtag #bersamastopjudol as part of a visual campaign against online gambling addiction. The narrative is presented entirely through images without verbal language. The research applies Primadi Tabrani’s Wimba theory to decode visual language and Roland Barthes’ semiotics to interpret symbolic meanings. Findings indicate that comics can function as effective campaign tools, transmitting urgent social messages through minimalist yet impactful visual strategies. The Tahilalats comic demonstrates how visual storytelling, combined with layered semiotic structures, can engage audiences cognitively and emotionally without textual dependence. This study contributes to scholarly discourse on visual communication and public campaign media, offering insights into the capacity of comics to address sensitive and complex issues through concise and relatable visual narratives. The implications highlight the potential of visual media in shaping public awareness and behavior in contemporary digital culture.

Abstract

The Banyumas and Banyuwangi dialects of Javanese exhibit notable lexical similarities, particularly in their retention of Old Javanese vocabulary, consonant endings, the specificity of vowel phonemes, and syllabic structures. These linguistic commonalities necessitate further research at other linguistic levels to substantiate the similarities between these two geographically distant dialects. This comparison also serves as a basis for reinforcing the hypothesis of a historical migration of Javanese speakers from Banyumas to Banyuwangi. Furthermore, this study confirms that the varieties of Javanese spoken in Banyumas and Banyuwangi constitute distinct dialects. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to increase the robustness of its findings and avoid potential biases. In other words, mixed methods make research more objective and comprehensive. Data was collected using a corpus linguistic framework using the AntConc application. Primary data sources included two bilingual dictionaries: Banyumasan—Indonesian Javanese Dictionary and the Using-Indonesia Regional Language Dictionary. The analysis—grounded in lexical semantics and dictionary microstructure in lexicology—reveals that the lexicons in the two dictionaries have similar lemma forms, similar and different classes, and similar semantic features. The similarity of the lemma forms is influenced by the standard Javanese dialect. Quantitative analysis indicates that 32% of the lexicons in both dictionaries are identical, whereas 68% differ. These findings confirm that despite their shared linguistic elements, the Banyumas and Banyuwangi varieties constitute distinct dialects of Javanese, though neither deviates significantly from the standard dialect.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of moral values in Hikayat Prabu Anom Volume 2 through the lens of Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics. The analysis focuses on three main categories of moral values: divine moral values, social moral values, and personal moral values. The method used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis techniques applied to selected passages in the text that reflect ethical dimensions. The data is analyzed by identifying the actions and dialogues of central characters that embody moral principles such as duty, goodwill, and moral autonomy. The findings reveal that divine moral values are reflected in the characters’ submission to divine will and their sincere devotion through spiritual practices such as meditation and worship. Social moral values are evident in the just and wise actions of Prabu Anom, who shows concern for his people, honors the service of royal officials, and nurtures familial ties with fellow rulers. Meanwhile, personal moral values emerge through emotional self-control, consistency in principles, and the courage and responsibility demonstrated by the characters in times of conflict. The study concludes that Hikayat Prabu Anom Volume 2 is not only a heroic narrative but also a literary work rich in ethical values that align with universal moral principles and remain relevant in contemporary life.

Abstract

Japanese films that explore war trauma are relatively rare, and this research departs from that gap by analyzing Studio Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill. The film reflects the conscience of Japanese society by depicting the realities of post-war life in the 1960s. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study examines how the main character, Umi Matsuzaki, represents war trauma through eight selected scenes and how such trauma encodes myth. By applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, the findings reveal that Umi embodies symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), manifested primarily through avoidance and intrusion. Her trauma is deeply rooted in the loss of her father during the Korean War, which becomes a recurring source of psychological distress. Specific symptoms identified include her reluctance to speak about her father, involuntary memories embodied in his shadow, nostalgic recollections of raising signal flags as he once taught her, distressing dreams of meeting him, recurrent war imagery such as the explosion of his supply ship, and prolonged psychological suffering. These elements demonstrate that the myth of war trauma extends beyond collective national memory into intimate family experiences. Ultimately, the study highlights how From Up on Poppy Hill not only portrays post-war recovery but also reinforces the pervasive impact of unresolved war trauma in Japanese cultural narratives.

Abstract

Throughout history, travel narratives have taken up various forms and served various purposes. The changes of forms and functions were influenced by the spirit of the age. Today, in the contemporary digital era, social media platforms like Instagram have transformed travel narratives into stories combining images and texts that significantly impact public attitude on travel and tourism. On certain occasions, Instagram travel narratives contribute to the dangerous trend of mass tourism, although there are moments when the same travel writing form advocates sustainability. This study investigates the extent to which travel narratives by prominent Indonesian travel influencers on Instagram advocate for sustainable tourism practices. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach and employing the thematic analysis, this research analyzes textual and visual data within these narratives to analyze their alignment with the four pillars of sustainable tourism defined by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), i.e., sustainable management, socio-economic sustainability, cultural sustainability, and environmental sustainability. Findings revealed 1) a significant interest in sustainable tourism values among Instagram viewers, particularly environmental sustainability and 2) a strong focus on the sub-section of conservation of natural heritage, followed by resource management and waste and emissions management.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Gawang Angklung (Galung) application, a visual-based digital tool integrating traditional angklung music with interactive visual cues, in supporting inclusive music education for deaf learners. Designed to bridge the gap between sound-based musical instruction and the learning needs of students with hearing impairments, Galung enables ensemble participation through synchronized visual signals. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data were collected from 24 deaf students, four music educators, and two application developers through interviews, classroom observations, and questionnaires. Quantitative results showed significant improvements in rhythmic accuracy (p < .01) and tempo recognition, while qualitative analysis revealed increased motivation, collaborative engagement, and communicative confidence. The integration of Galung aligns with constructivist and aesthetic learning principles, offering a multisensory, culturally grounded approach to music instruction. Despite its benefits, challenges were identified, including teacher training needs and technical limitations. This study highlights the potential of culturally embedded, visually adaptive technologies to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and active participation in arts education, while contributing to the broader discourse on equitable learning opportunities for students with disabilities.

Abstract

Reading is crucial for learning as it allows students to comprehend texts across various subjects. Effective texts play a significant role in enhancing students' reading skills. To determine suitable reading materials for students, evaluating lexical density and readability is essential. This study examines the lexical density and readability of reading passages in the “English for Nusantara” textbook used by eighth-grade students. A qualitative descriptive method and content analysis were used in this research, by analyzing 20 selected texts from each chapter of the textbook. The study aims to (1) assess the lexical density of the selected passages, (2) evaluate their readability levels, and (3) determine the relevance of these factors to the students' grade level. Lexical density was measured using Ure’s (1971) formula, while Flesch’s reading ease formula assessed readability. The findings revealed that (1) none of the texts had low lexical density; 12 texts had moderate lexical density, and 8 had high lexical density; (2) the readability test indicated five different reading levels among the 20 texts, with only 4 texts suitable for the students' grade level; and (3) the textbook may be insufficiently challenging in terms of readability, though the moderate to high lexical density suggests students are exposed to rich vocabulary.

Abstract

Munggah Suwunan or Munggah Mulo tradition, still practiced in Javanese communities like Warugede and Durajaya in Cirebon. The tradition is significant in Javanese culture because it symbolizes important values and beliefs deeply rooted in the community. It represents more than just a construction milestone; it embodies spiritual and cultural connections to life, nature, and God. The act of raising the highest roof beam is seen as a moment of gratitude and reverence, where participants pray for blessings, prosperity, and protection for the household. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the meaning of denotation and connotation as well as the myths contained in the objects used in Munggah Suwunan tradition. This is a qualitative descriptive research method. Through a semiotic analysis based on Roland Barthes’ theory, this study explores the denotative and connotative meanings of the fourteen objects used in the tradition which convey deep symbolic meaning related to human life, reflecting values of spirituality, patriotism, and communal support, then revealing myths of gratitude, prayers, and hopes for blessings and prosperity. By performing Munggah Suwunan, the community not only upholds local wisdom and spiritual practices but also strengthens social bonds, reflecting the Javanese philosophy of harmony between humans and their environment. This ritual thus holds a dual significance: preserving cultural identity and maintaining the spiritual well-being of individuals and their homes.

Abstract

This study examines how economic concepts are metaphorically constructed in Indonesian and Chinese news headlines. Employing the Lakoff and Johnson's framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the study analyzes and compares conceptual metaphors in economic news headlines from CNBC Indonesia and China Business Network published between January and April 2025. Employing a qualitative methodology guided by MIPVU, the study mapped conceptual economic metaphors in a corpus of 500 economic news headlines. The investigation demonstrates a significant overlap in the conceptualization of economic events in both languages: economic actions are physical movements, business is a natural force, economy is a competition, money is liquid, profit is up and loss is down. Despite these similarities, this research identifies unique conceptual metaphors. In the Indonesian context, unique metaphors include trade is hunting, business is a monarchy, business is a tidal cycle, business is a supernatural phenomenon, and economic actions are a martial arts skill. conversely, unique Chinese economic metaphors include business is a game, business is a historical event, business is a philosophical action, company is a martial arts school, and business is a cultural activity. This comparative study demonstrates that while universal cognitive mechanisms underpin some shared economic metaphors, the specific metaphors used in Indonesian and Chinese news headlines are strongly shaped by their unique cultures, histories, and philosophies.
