Abstract

This paper examines the intertextuality between two novels, Toenggoel by Eer Asura and Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk (RDP) by Ahmad Tohari. The intertextual relations can be said to be strengthening. Toenggoel clarifies the idea in RDP, in that a person who tries to reject a tradition is destined to possess a tragic fate: eliminated and isolated from his society. Sapto Linggo in Toenggoel is eliminated from his so- ciety because he rejects the gemblak tradition, whereas Srintil, in RDP, goes crazy because she is not willing to submissively receive the ronggeng tradition.

Abstract

The post-reading stage of a reading lesson is often confused with the clos- ing of a lesson. However, having new information from the whilst-reading stage should bring about a change such as the students would know more, or think or feel differently from before. Teachers should help students connect the new information they are now familiar with and their lives. This article re-introduces the importance of the post-reading stage and some workable, meaningful activities. Interactive ac- tivities are chosen so that students not only process their knowledge obtained from the text but also communicate this new knowledge to peers.

Abstract

This study examines how economic concepts are metaphorically constructed in Indonesian and Chinese news headlines. Employing the Lakoff and Johnson's framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the study analyzes and compares conceptual metaphors in economic news headlines from CNBC Indonesia and China Business Network published between January and April 2025. Employing a qualitative methodology guided by MIPVU, the study mapped conceptual economic metaphors in a corpus of 500 economic news headlines. The investigation demonstrates a significant overlap in the conceptualization of economic events in both languages: economic actions are physical movements, business is a natural force, economy is a competition, money is liquid, profit is up and loss is down. Despite these similarities, this research identifies unique conceptual metaphors. In the Indonesian context, unique metaphors include trade is hunting, business is a monarchy, business is a tidal cycle, business is a supernatural phenomenon, and economic actions are a martial arts skill. conversely, unique Chinese economic metaphors include business is a game, business is a historical event, business is a philosophical action, company is a martial arts school, and business is a cultural activity. This comparative study demonstrates that while universal cognitive mechanisms underpin some shared economic metaphors, the specific metaphors used in Indonesian and Chinese news headlines are strongly shaped by their unique cultures, histories, and philosophies.

Abstract

This research intends to find out whether Indonesian EFL learners are aware of the presence of “space” and are able to lexicalize it in their English compositions. It takes 21 seventh-semester English Department students as research subjects. They were given story pictures and asked to write a narrative. The resulting 21 EFL narratives were measured against a native-speaker narrative model in terms of “spatial words” (prepositions and adverbial particles), producing the following comparisons: 6.6% vs. 7.2% in total, 78.2% vs. 85.7% used dynamically, 95.5% vs. 100% used obligatorily, and 19.2% vs. 28.6% used in phrasal verbs. This indicates that Indonesian EFL learners are sufficiently sensitive to “space” and know how to lexicalize it in their compositions. Theoretically, their sensitivity to “space” implies that, in learning English, they have undergone some degree of cognitive restructuring; practically, EFL learners who wish to acquire a near-native writing style should be competent in space lexicalization.
