Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the role of Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) derived from the ornamental heritage of the Great Mosque of Demak in strengthening Demak’s city branding as the “City of Wali” (Kota Wali). Motivated by the need for culturally grounded urban identity amid rapid modernization, the research examines how religious and historical visual elements can be translated into contemporary environmental design. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach informed by place branding and visual communication theory. Data were collected through field observations, visual documentation, interviews, and a literature review, followed by an analytical process that involved identifying local wisdom, interpreting mosque ornamentation, evaluating existing EGD practices, and developing and simulating an ornament-based EGD model. The findings indicate that the ornaments of the Great Mosque of Demak possess strong symbolic and communicative value and can be systematically adapted into four key elements of EGD: landmarks, local typography, public advertising media, and wayfinding systems. These components contribute to enhancing urban aesthetics and reinforcing Demak’s religious and cultural identity. Rather than offering a universal solution, the proposed model serves as a context-specific framework that demonstrates how heritage-based visual elements can support culturally and spiritually informed city branding. The study contributes to EGD and place-branding discourse by highlighting the strategic role of local ornamentation in shaping meaningful urban visual identities.

Abstract

The aspects of translation acceptability are not related only to the accuracy and clarity of the translation. They also cover the naturalness of translation. This study aims to reveal the degree of translation naturalness of the Quranic imperative verses. This evaluative study compares the translations of the verses by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (MORA) and the one made by Muhammad Thalib (MT). The study used embedded case study research. The findings of the study show that in general, the translations of the verses in the two versions have an acceptable degree of naturalness. However, when both were compared, the translation naturalness of MT’s translation is slightly more acceptable than the one made by the MORA. The translation acceptability of the two translations is inseparable from the translation techniques and procedures used in handling the translation units at the micro-level. The translation techniques such as reduction, transposition, amplification, and the like are deemed as being able to present the translation naturalness of the verses.

Abstract

Rangsang Tuban by Padmasusastra offers a rich portrayal of Javanese social life through its depiction of traditions, religious practices, and ritual activities that shape the narrative and its characters. This study aims to examine the representation of Javanese religiosity and ritual in the novel and to explore its relevance to contemporary society. The novelty of this research lies in its analysis of ritual practices as expressions of Javanese religious syncretism, revealing interactions between formal religions and local spiritual traditions. Employing a qualitative descriptive method within a literary anthropology framework, this study analyzes textual data in the form of selected quotations obtained through close reading and note-taking. The data are examined through identification, classification, interpretation, and contextual analysis. The findings indicate that the novel reflects a dynamic interaction between Islam, Buddhism, and Javanese spiritual beliefs, manifested in practices such as worship, prayer, scriptural reading, chanting, and puja semedi. These rituals function not only as religious expressions but also as means of constructing spiritual identity and maintaining harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. This study demonstrates that Rangsang Tuban serves as a cultural text that preserves and articulates the continuity of Javanese religiosity in a changing social context.

Abstract

This article explores how digital recording practices, amid contemporary technological transformation, rearticulate the musical meaning of karawitan, reshape listening experience, and reorganize its modes of cultural circulation. The study is situated within broader scholarly debates on digital mediation, particularly concerning the shifting relationship between recorded sound and the socio-spatial and ritual contexts that have historically constituted karawitan performance. Using a descriptive qualitative case-study approach, the research draws on in depth interviews with musicians (pengrawit), scholars, distributors, and listeners, supported by observations of recording environments, patterns of online circulation, archival sources, and indicators of platform based distribution. The findings indicate that the disembedding of sound from live performance settings constrains the transmission of inter-musician interaction, spatial resonance, and ritual presence, while technical standardization in digital production tends to narrow improvisational scope and dynamic responsiveness. Concurrently, the increasing dominance of internet platforms such as YouTube and Spotify substantially broadens access and accelerates global circulation, yet also fosters listening practices oriented toward immediacy and fragmentation. Rather than portraying digitalization as a unidirectional process of cultural loss, this study reveals a structural tension between expanded reach and altered experiential depth, underscoring the need for context-aware recording strategies and digital curation models capable of supporting the sustainable transmission of karawitan in the digital era.

Abstract

NBC News, as an international media outlet, plays a significant role in shaping public perception and moral evaluation of social issues. Its coverage of the Debanhi Escobar case in Mexico has attracted widespread international attention, particularly in relation to the handling of feminicide by Law Enforcement Authorities. Within this context, the present study investigates how NBC News represents Law Enforcement Authorities in reporting the Debanhi Escobar case and how such representations construct moral and institutional evaluations. This study applies Fairclough’s Dialectical Relational Approach (DRA) to examine the relationship between textual strategies, social practices, and power relations embedded in media discourse. In addition, Appraisal Theory is employed to analyze evaluative language and to uncover the underlying moral and ethical positioning conveyed in the news reports. The data are drawn from publicly accessible NBC News articles and are analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method, supported by multimodal analysis. The findings indicate that the victim is foregrounded through the narration of violent events and moral evaluations expressed via direct, indirect, and narrative speech. In contrast, Law Enforcement Authorities are predominantly represented through heteroglossic voices, irony, and weak epistemic modality, which contribute to negative judgment and foster skepticism toward institutional credibility. These discursive practices suggest that NBC News operates not merely as an information provider but as an active social and evaluative agent. Overall, this study demonstrates that the integration of DRA and Appraisal Theory provides a comprehensive framework for examining international media discourse and its role in promoting social accountability.

Abstract

The Cold War and its legacy in Southeast Asia, has been considered as one of the darkest parts of the region’s history including in Indonesia. Efforts to capture the painful memory of the Cold War had been established through various means including fictional storytelling. Among many literature discussing the dark history of the era, Laksmi Pamuntjak “Question on Red” had its distinctive presence since it was written in English. The utilization of English as a medium opens the door for English speaking readers to be able to dwell into a literature work that is considerably unfamiliar to their cultural context. Utilizing reception studies as a tool, this research is comparing Indonesian and non-Indonesian audiences in actively interpreting, consuming, and responding to historical fiction. The sociocultural background of the reader played a major role in how historical fiction is understood. Yet, when it comes to universal norms, all readers share a similar perspective. The study enriched the understanding of literature, particularly in exploring readers’ responses that come from different cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the concept of visual healing from a Visual Communication Design (VCD) perspective, focusing on its potential contribution to emotional comfort and psychological well-being among urban office workers. Contemporary workplace environments are increasingly characterized by prolonged screen exposure, dense visual information, and sustained cognitive demands, conditions that intensify visual fatigue and psychological strain. In this context, the study positions visual design not merely as an aesthetic practice, but as a psychologically responsive medium capable of shaping users' emotional experiences in everyday work settings. Employing a qualitative Research through Design (RtD) methodology, the study treats the design process as a reflective and epistemic mode of inquiry to explore the relationship between visual design elements and users' emotional responses. A series of visual communication design artefacts was developed based on calm-oriented visual principles, including soft colour palettes, the strategic use of negative space, balanced visual rhythm, and lightweight typography. These artefacts were evaluated through visual perception testing involving 20 urban office workers in Medan, Indonesia. The findings reveal consistent descriptive tendencies indicating enhanced perceptions of visual comfort, calmness, focus, and emotional relaxation. Although the designs do not function as clinical or therapeutic interventions, the results suggest that deliberately structured visual stimuli may operate as supportive, non-invasive restorative experiences within visually intensive work environments. Based on these findings, the study proposes the Visual Healing Framework as a conceptual model that elucidates the interaction between visual design elements and emotional responses in urban workplace contexts.
