Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the semantic construction in Indone- sian language by pre-school-age children. The present research consisted of a longitudinal study of five pre-school-age children. The study of these five children is based on the developmental psycholinguistic and semantic-pragmatic studies. To collect the data, we used the observation, recording, and interview technique. The results show that the semantic construction of word meaning in Indonesian language by pre-school-age children consisted of: (1) over-specification, (2) overgeneraliza- tion, (3) intersection, (4) towards meaning spesification, and (5) meaning associa- tion. Overgeneralization and intersection dominated language development by child- ren in 2 until 4 year olds, even though since 4 year old those indications are decreasing.

Abstract

This article analyzes the use of dirty words with reference to sociolinguis- tic and Saussurean conceptual frameworks. It starts with a personal-anecdotal ac- count on the difficulties in dealing with didactic issues in relation to the use of dirty words. In the guise of tackling the problem, sociolinguistic explanation is pursued, which, in the end, shows that sociolinguistic explanation is not really adequate to handle the issue. This relates to the possible notion that dirty words might be enacted as a (very) personal expression, devoid of any physical addressees. Saussu- rean linguistic concepts are also explored, and, yet, similar to the sociolinguistic ex- planation, also lacks explanatory rigor in that the Saussurean materiality approach affirms that dirty words are neutral in their very materiality. A hypothetical proposi- tion to deal with dirty words will conclude the article.

Abstract

Every type of verb has a specific distribution in the context of plot in the written Indonesian tale narrative discourse (WNDBI). That specific distribution im- plies specific verb functions and meanings in the context of plot in WNDBI. There are three types of verbs dominant in the use of verbs in the WNDBI, namely materi- al-process verbs, relational-process verbs, and mental-process verbs. Types of claus- es, internal pattern of clauses embedded by certain types of verbs, and characteristics of participants have effects on the functions and meanings of the clauses in WNDBI. The written Indonesian tale narrative discourse possesses a characteristic of accentu- ating physical conflicts among the participants. This is marked by the intensive use of material-process verbs in the stage of conflictI.

As a result, English varie- ties or Englishes emerged. This paper proposes an argument that the coexistence of both standard and varieties of English is equally important.
