Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the prophetic message portrayed through the characters within Kuntowijoyo’s fiction. The focus of the study is limited to the existence of the child and the grandfather and also their relation in conveying the prophetic message. The sources of the data for this study are Kuntowijoyo’s novel along with his fiction collections. Thus, the data are gathered through document collection. Those data are analyzed using an interactive analysis method, which results in simultaneous data collection and analysis. The findings of the study show that: (1) the grandfather character is portrayed as the symbol of the afterlife; (2) the child character symbolizes life itself; (3) the relationship between both characters—the child and the grandfather—can be concluded as a binary opposition. The child, who marks the beginning of life, becomes the emphasis of the grandfather’s symbol as the end of life.

Abstract

The Bible’s translator expects his translation to be not only accurate, but also acceptable in accordance with the norms and cultural values of its readers. This study aims to describe the domesticating ideology in translation. Tu–Vous Theory combined with Attitude, as part of Appraisal Theory in Systemic Functional Linguistics, is used to investigate how words should be used. Dynamic Equivalence Theory is utilized to describe word usage in society. A descriptive qualitative approach in determining two principal orientations of translation techniques, methods, and ideologies was applied in analyzing the data. Questionnaires containing sentences with English terms of address in Luke’s Bible and their equivalents in Balinese were used to verify the data. The findings show that the domesticating ideology has a positive contribution to the quality of the translation with regard to its accuracy, acceptability, and readability.

Abstract

Due to the unavailability of materials for the Reading II subject, this study attempts to develop a reading box material which consists of 80 units of 400–500 words. Each unit contains an introduction, questions, readings, answer keys, reflections, and monitoring books. This reading box enables students to practice reading extensively and independently. This material was developed through several stages: planning, exploration, product development, validation, and laminating. During validation, revisions were made to the questions, readings, answer keys, reflections, illustrations, layout, the title, and the monitoring book. However, the results of the questionnaire on the validation process show that the material was qualified in terms of content, the appropriateness of the reading types and topics to students’ interests and intelligence, the length of the readings, the variety of text types, the difficulty level, illustrations, layout, font, and letter size.

Abstract

It is often said that Skopos theory has abolished the position of the source text. Nevertheless, translators still have to translate source texts, and to do this, they must identify translation units and decide what to do with them in the translation process. The same applies to translation description and criticism or even quality assessment. In order to compare source and target texts and achieve a fair judgment of a translation, translators need the communicative function of the translation unit. This article deals with the basic concept of Skopos and the functional aspects that come into play both in translation and translation description.

Abstract

Metaphors in a written discourse such as in letters using bahasa Indonesia can be derived from the metaphorical expressions used by the writers to the editors, showing conceptualization based on what they experience, feel, and think in their lives. This paper aims at finding out the universality of the concepts shown by the metaphors and the users employing them. Using nonparticipant observation with a note-taking technique, the data are collected and selected purposively. With distributional, referential, reflective introspective, and abductive inferential methods, the data are analyzed. The results indicate that metaphors can be grouped into universal, specific, and public ones due to the universality and specification of the concepts conveyed, as well as the users employing them. This implies that bahasa Indonesia conveys similar concepts to those of other languages in the world, which is caused by experiences from different times and places encountered by Indonesians living in an agricultural country.

Abstract

This article is aimed at elaborating not only students’ reading comprehension based on international and local tests conducted for fourth-grade elementary school students, but also the correlation between both results. This descriptive research was conducted at 12 elementary schools in five provinces located in Java and Sumatra. The instruments used for the reading comprehension tests were PIRLS, an international test, and a researcher-made test. The results of the study show that fourth graders’ ability to comprehend texts is very low. They could only understand 30% of the reading texts, both informative and literary. The results of the international test show a very high correlation with those of the researcher-made test, although they indicate lower scores than the local test results.

Abstract

This study is carried out to answer the research question: what are the characteristics of intrinsic elements, including plot, character, and setting, in Arabic fictitious narrative writing by Indonesian native-language students? This study is qualitative in nature. The approach used is socio-psycho-structural. The data are verbal and consist of: (1) fictitious narrative writing, (2) interview transcripts, and (3) field notes. The data on fictitious narrative writing were taken from the students’ portfolio of narrative fiction final tasks in the Writing Lecture 1 course. Interview transcripts and field notes from the teaching process were used to clarify and complete the data from the fictitious narrative writing. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis method. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that: first, linear plot is the dominant plot in the students’ fiction writing; second, character naming and physiological description are dominant, with characters described through both direct and indirect description; and third, story setting is dominated by descriptive backgrounds focusing on location and time without psychological meaning.

Abstract

This paper is intended to describe the results of a study focusing on students’ translation problems in translating Arabic texts into Indonesian. The problems result from students’ understanding and retelling (re-expressing) the results of that understanding during the translation process. In this study, the researcher applies a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that students’ problems in translation are closely related to (1) their understanding of linguistic and non-linguistic structures, and (2) their difficulties in retelling (re-expressing) the results of their reading regarding linguistic and non-linguistic issues.
