Abstract

This is a report on an investigation of the differences between English teachers’ belief in effective teaching and their real practice in remote-area schools in Indonesia. It is assumed that their beliefs play an important role in influencing their decision in the classroom. It also uncovers the possible factors causing the differences. A descriptive study using retrospective method was employed using a questionnaire and an interview to 15 respondents participating in a Teacher Professional Education. The findings indicate that their beliefs about instructional objectives, materials, approach, classroom management, instructional media, and assessment are not always reflected in implementations due to practical reasons or changes of belief either in a positive or negative way.

Abstract

The characteristics of language use in the global era include language instability, the prominence of language hybridity, discourse commodification, and technologized discourse. Language has demonstrated its role as a determining factor in hegemony, a phenomenon that Indonesian language teachers should take into consideration. Therefore, the teaching of the Indonesian language should be developed based on the principles of critical discourse analysis. Consequently, learners of Indonesian should develop critical language awareness and language sensitivity from the perspective of emancipation.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to demonstrate the deepest meaning of the philosophical concept of "The Over-Soul" by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) found in some of his essays, which were considered to be too difficult to decipher as there are many symbols and metaphors. This paper discusses Bhagavad Gita and Sufism teaching as those religious epics influence Emerson’s work. In addition, the hermeneutical method of Paul Ricoeur as one philosophical approach is used to interpret symbols and metaphors in his essays. The result of the study concludes that “The Over Soul” or the “divine light” is able to provide the feeling of “Perfect Happiness” and become “the Whole-Man” by performing the following: having retrospect, doing introspection, contemplation, and meditation in order to reinforce self-control attitude.

Therefore, students’ difficulties in “during writing” stage can be minimized.

Abstract

The study examines war poems between the Dutch and Aceh in terms of hatred and honor. The data on the war poems were obtained from written sources produced by both the Dutch and the Acehnese. The data were analyzed using a sociology of literature approach. The results of the study show that: (1) the Dutch’s hatred toward Aceh, which was labelled as the den of criminals, traitor, and anathema, was implanted before the aggression through poems sung by the military personnel sent to Aceh; (2) the Acehnese’s hatred toward Kaphe Belanda (Dutch infidels), who were labelled as heretic infidels, maledict infidels, cursed infidels, and Jewish infidels, was implanted through war poems that inspired the Acehnese to willingly die in battles against the Dutch wherever they were, whether during wartime or periods of ceasefire; (3) for the Dutch, fighting against Aceh was a means of defending the honor of the motherland and obtaining medals of honor; and (4) for the Acehnese, fighting against the Dutch was a collective obligation, and dying as a martyr in a holy war represented the highest honor of being Acehnese.
