Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a crucial role in writing as ‘linking words’, ‘linking phrases’, or ‘sentence connectors’ that bind ideas between sentences in a paragraph or between paragraphs to build coherence in a text. DMs should be sufficiently but not overly used in writing. As EFL learners find it difficult to identify the types, functions, and positions of DMs to link ideas in their academic writing, this article attempts to share an instrument in the form of a DMs checklist to help learners enhance their knowledge of DMs. The checklist can also be used as a teacher/peer feedback form in the writing process.

Abstract

This qualitative research is an attempt to explain the structural, lexical, and semantic aspects of English proverbs by using a grounded theory approach. The design of this research is an embedded single case study which employs Spradley’s qualitative data analysis techniques. This study used a non-participant observation method which involved scanning, reading, and taking-note techniques. The data were then categorized into taxonomies by using distributional and identity method. The result of the research shows that: (1) the structures of English proverbs are varied in forms, from the simple to complex, (2) the inter-constituent relations are not rigid, (3) some unique lexical formulas construct the proverbial structures, and (4) lexicons that construct English proverbs have their own semantic distinctive functions.

Abstract

The Old Javanese language (OJL) is a language with rich morphemes that form words. This implicates the syntactic process in the language. One example of a syntactic alternation is a causative. Causative is a valence-raising mechanism in the structure of a clause. This study aims to describe the formal causative in OJL. Causative in OJL is morphologically marked on the verb. Causative verbs can be formed from non-causative ones, such as adjectives and basic verbs. In OJL there are three types of causative: morphological, lexical, and analytic causative. Morphological causative is formed by affixes like mang-/ng+-i, paha-+-in-, -um-+-akên (a), infix -um-, and -in-/-an, -in- (in the passive voice). Lexical causative is the basic form which has a causative meaning. Analytic causative is formed by adding a verb form *gawe*, *matangyan*, and *hetu*. Intransitive verb clause is diathesis patientive. The transitive verb clause has two macro roles, namely actor and undergoer. When the two macro situations are merged into a single macro situation, the particles are connected by conjunctions: *sawet*, *matangyan*, *apan*, and *karana*.

Abstract

Postmodern fiction has unique features that distinguish its works from other works of fiction. It often blurs literary genres and breaks conventional narration. Toni Morrison’s novel titled *Sula*, a work that has triggered some critical work, is considered as one of the prime texts of this fiction. This article is a report on an investigation of the postmodern features of Morrison’s *Sula*. It is a descriptive qualitative study using the narration and conversation among the characters. It showed that the novel starts with paradox and ambiguity in the beginning. The author is able to judge the ethical or moral ramifications and decipher Sula as either an evil or a good person. It also criticizes patriarchal institution, gender displacement, and associative ambiguity.

Abstract

Gentle, polite, courteous, systematic, organized, clear, and straightforward use of language reflects a speaker’s personality and culture. Everyone, including the members of the South Sulawesi Parliament, is expected to maintain good manners and ethics in communication. The study aims to describe and explain declarative, interrogative, and imperative forms as well as speech act strategies used by the members of the South Sulawesi Parliament. The qualitative study employed the functional approach on language. The study was conducted in the South Sulawesi Parliament House. The data of the research were obtained from speech acts, field observations, and interviews. The stages of data collection are 1. Preparation, 2. Recording, 3. Observation, 4. Interview, and 5. Transcription. The data were analyzed by the following procedures: 1. data reduction, 2. data presentation and interpretation, and 3. data conclusion and verification. The findings revealed that there were various forms of politeness used by the respondent. Moreover, the locution act was the more dominant strategy used by the respondent than the illocutionary act.

Abstract

This practice-led research proposes recurrence as a systematic photographic method, where Derrida's concept of iterability is achieved through controlled visual iteration. Through recurrence, identical objects undergo transformation across iterations because variations in light, motion and environmental conditions produce perceptual instability rather than visual sameness. This process produces uncanny effects identifiable through perceptual ambiguity (Jentsch), environmental transformation and reappearance of overlooked materials (Schelling). The work engages pre-Freudian concepts of the uncanny - Jentsch's intellectual uncertainty and Schelling's definition of the uncanny as ``something that should have remained hidden but has returned to light.'' Waste materials, typically ignored or excluded from conscious attention, return through the photographic process. Forest fire residues, overgrown with vegetation, reappear across iterations. However, uncanny effects are not uniform. Burning leaves activate Jentsch's perceptual ambiguity only. Trash can activate both Schelling and Jentsch: Schelling is always activated (revealing hidden dumping), while Jentsch is activated only when the trash is made of deformable materials (fabric, jute, thin plastic) that change shape when thrown, not from rigid materials (bottles, hard containers) that retain their form. Each image marks a moment of recurrence, where the object's appearance is reconfigured through subject selection, material intervention (burning, iterative throwing), environmental conditions (light, weather, time of day), and photographic techniques (flash, exposure control). Uncanny effects are selectively achieved through iterative trials, in which unsuccessful images fail to produce perceptual instability

Abstract

In the context of Sundanese culture, pupuh is a literary form that has static rules. As a literary form, pupuh is often used as a guide for composing song lyrics in Sundanese traditional vocal art, thereby leading to interactions with musical elements. In this case, this interaction happens to the pupuh Sinom, as mentioned in the lyrics of the tembang Sunda cianjuran song entitled Sinom Degung and Gawil Tarik. In this context, a negotiation occurs between the conventions of the pupuh Sinom and the song's melody, ultimately leading to the pupuh Sinom's adaptation. Using a descriptive analysis approach, this study aims to understand the event through the conventions of pupuh Sinom and the melody of the tembang Sunda cianjuran song. This analysis shows that the conventions of pupuh, specifically padalisan number and guru lagu, can preserve their static nature. In contrast, the guru wilangan number becomes dynamic due to the insertion of suffixes and word repetition, which allows for greater flexibility and variation in the performance of the tembang Sunda cianjuran songs. Finally, this study reconceptualizes the understanding of pupuh from a static framework into a dynamic framework. Furthermore, these results help shape the world of ethnomusicology, especially those related to the dynamic relationship between poetry and music.
