Abstract

Unlike English that divides its conditional sentences into open and hypothetical types, there is no division of conditional sentence types in Indonesian. Hence, translating conditional sentences from Indonesian to English is challenging. The purpose of this study was to determine the equivalence of meaning and structure of the conditional sentences in the source language (Indonesian) and the target language (English) in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel, *Gadis Pantai*, and its English translation. As this novel is a literary work, the complexity of the structure of the conditional sentence in this novel is very interesting to study. The method used in this study is comparative descriptive, which was employed to provide clear pictures of the discussed issues. The findings of the study show that in translating the conditional sentence from Bahasa Indonesia into English in the novels, the translator has made some adjustments both in the sentence structure and meaning due to the significant differences of the social-cultural aspect between the source and the target language.

Abstract

The study examines the effectiveness of Moodle in teaching Sharaf (Arabic morphology) by taking into account the students’ locus of control (LOC). A 2×2 factorial design was used in this study. In general, the group of students who were taught by using Moodle showed higher scores than the group who were taught without using Moodle. When the students’ LOC were taken into consideration, however, the students with external LOC in the Moodle group showed lower scores than those with external LOC in the non-Moodle group. The opposite was true for the students with internal LOC. It can be concluded that using Moodle in teaching Sharaf was effective when the students have internal LOC, but not effective when they have external LOC. Considering the students have internal LOC, the use of Moodle can improve the quality of teaching Sharaf and the students’ scores.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the type, meaning, function, and strategy of the mythology of Amungme, an ethnic group in Papua. The study is based on an assumption that the underlying concept of the Amungme mythology is the source of its conflict. The research design was based on the hermeneutics model of Schleiermacher, Dilthey, and Ricoeur. The study used quotations from the tales of the Amungme's myth, attitudes of the Amungme people, statements from the resource persons of the Waa Valley, and some written documents as the sources of data. Hermeneutical circle model was used to analyze the data. The result of the study shows that (1) the Amungme myth text contains human endogeonic, cosmogonic, eschatoic, languagenic, and animagenic types; (2) the three represented relations in the Amungme myth text are human-God, human-human, and human-nature relationships; (3) the myth has mystical, cosmological, sociological, and pedagogical function; (4) the legacy is passed on to the following generations based on the normative principles of the "three-generation speaking pattern". The findings inform policy makers in development, ecology, and education in Papua, especially in the district of Amungsa.

Abstract

The study aims to describe multiculturalism in the 9th edition of the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, published in 2002. Multiculturalism deals with the dominant and the dominated, the majority and the minority, and the ruling party and the controlled party in the context of a transnational community. In the novel, multiculturalism is represented by Nyai Ontosoroh, a part of the Indonesian minority group, who in search of her identity crosses the bridge of ethnicity and cultural gap. The qualitative study employs multiculturalism theory in a literature review format. The data were analysed descriptively using the interpretative technique. The findings reveal that: (1) multiculturalism in the novel denotes: (a) the differences and inequalities between the native and the European, and (b) the humiliation and marginalization of the indigenous people; and (2) multiculturalism covers the issues of: (a) establishing identity and intercultural communication, and (b) conducting cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

The study examined the meanings of the texts on the packaging of jamu for women and revealed its proposed ideology. As a health product, information on the design of the packaging of jamu is not only as a means to inform consumers of the product, but also as a "tool" for manufacturers to construct meaning and convey their message and ideology. By using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, the researchers analyzed the texts and uncovered the denotative and connotative meanings. The findings showed that the texts on the packaging of jamu for women implies ambivalent meanings between ‘jamu’ and ‘medicine’, ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’, ‘local’ and ‘global’, ‘empirical’ and ‘science’, ‘natural’ and ‘cultural’, ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’. The existence of an ideology of femininity and the frequent use of medical discourses that influences the construction of the texts were evident.

Abstract

Sculpture is an iconic sign to convey a message or something that can be used to represent a state (context), events of the past, or those in the future. Sculpture consists of iconic signs that work together systemically to achieve certain goals. This study aims to (1) describe the meaning of denotation, and (2) interpret the connotative meaning of Anusapati’s work entitled “Bunga di Atas Batu” (Flower on a Stone), a bronze statue created in 2004, by employing the connotative semiotics approach of Roland Barthes. The sculpture portrays a monument, which invites everyone to see that ‘flower’ as the connotation of the forest has been elevated, not to be given a respectable position, but just to be remembered. Forests as valuable assets owned by the Indonesians and even the world are seen metaphorically as ‘the flower’ which is gradually disappearing, (almost) becoming a memory. In some areas in Indonesia, forests have even completely disappeared and only left memories behind.

Abstract

The success of dakwah as communication activities emphasizing on religious behavior transformation into the society, cannot be separated from the aspects of the language. Islam has taught us about the universal language of dakwah, as mentioned in the Qur'an. Dakwah language based on the Qur'an is characterized by saying something good so that it can imprint on the audience soul. Moreover, it must be a wise, a kind, an easy to understand, and sacred words. This paper discusses the organization of dakwah language based on the Qur'an by taking communication strategies that are relevant to its contexts. The use of contextualization in this study means that the activities must consider its situation, including: "who speak, what language, to whom, and to what end". The dakwah method described is expected to improve the effectiveness of dakwah so that religious behavior is successfully transformed into the society.
