Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine learner motivation in Arabic language acquisition through a comprehensive literature review of theoretical and empirical studies published between 2020 and 2025. Motivation is widely recognized as a key factor influencing learners’ engagement, persistence, and achievement in second language learning. The study employs a thematic analysis to synthesize findings from selected peer-reviewed articles, focusing on motivational dimensions, socio-cultural influences, pedagogical practices, and technological integration. The results indicate that motivation in Arabic language learning is multidimensional, encompassing intrinsic, extrinsic, integrative, and instrumental orientations. Religious and cultural factors are found to play a dominant role, particularly in Muslim contexts, while pedagogical innovation and technology-enhanced learning significantly contribute to increased learner engagement. However, challenges such as language complexity, limited instructional resources, and technological disparities continue to affect motivation levels. The study highlights the importance of adopting context-sensitive and student-centered approaches to enhance motivation and improve learning outcomes. It also identifies research gaps, particularly the need for longitudinal and context-specific studies. Overall, this study provides insights into effective strategies for fostering motivation in Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the persistent issue of low-quality Qur’an recitation among the Muslim community in Ujong Tanoh Darat Village, despite the relatively high frequency of religious activities. Although most individuals are able to recite the Qur’an fluently, their recitation often does not conform to established tajwid principles. This research aims to examine Qur’anic recitation practices and to identify the underlying factors contributing to limited awareness of recitation quality through the Living Qur’an perspective. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The findings indicate that the majority of participants fall into the category of “fluent but incorrect in tajwid,” which is shaped by interrelated factors including family involvement, social environment, institutional religious structures, and entrenched habitual practices. The Living Qur’an perspective further reveals that the Qur’an is predominantly understood as a ritual practice and a symbol of social religiosity rather than as a text requiring precise phonetic and methodological observance. In conclusion, the phenomenon of inadequate Qur’anic recitation quality reflects a complex socio-religious dynamic that necessitates an integrated educational strategy involving family, community, and institutional reinforcement to enhance tajwid literacy sustainably.

Abstract

This study examines the epistemological foundations of ṭarīqa (Sufi orders) by reconstructing their role as systems of spiritual education within the broader framework of Islamic pedagogy. In modern academic discourse, tarekat are often reduced to mere ritual practices or socio-religious institutions. In contrast, this study argues that tarekat constitute a structured epistemological system that integrates revelation, spiritual experience, and authoritative guidance. Employing a qualitative approach based on library research, alongside conceptual and epistemological analysis, this study investigates both classical and contemporary sources to identify the key components of knowledge production, transmission, and validation within ṭarīqa. The findings reveal that the epistemology of tarekat consists of three interrelated elements: (1) sources of knowledge that are textual, experiential, and authoritative; (2) methods of knowledge acquisition grounded in practice and experiential engagement through ṭarīqa rituals; and (3) mechanisms of validation based on spiritual authority and the continuity of sanad. The learning process within ṭarīqa is inherently transformative, emphasizing the internalization of spiritual values through disciplined practices such as bay‘ah, dhikr, riyāḍah, mujāhadah, and sulūk under the guidance of a murshid. This process reflects a holistic educational model that integrates cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions in shaping individual consciousness and character. Accordingly, this study offers a new conceptual framework for understanding tarekat as a transformative system of Sufi education, with significant implications for the development of contemporary Islamic pedagogy.
