Abstract

The electrical system on a ship is a critical area vulnerable to system failure and fire risks due to excessive temperature or humidity. This research aims to design and implement a remote temperature and humidity monitoring system called "Shipboard Guardian," based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This system design method utilizes a NodeMCU ESP8266 as the main microcontroller, processing data from the DHT11 sensor (to detect temperature and humidity) and controlling actuator components such as LEDs and buzzers. Data collected by the sensor is then sent in real time to the cloud via the Internet of Things.Cloud platform. Internet of Things serves as a visual interface (dashboard) that allows ship crew or shore operators to monitor the condition of the ship's electrical system through a smartphone or web application. Key features of this system include: (1) real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity of electrical rooms, (2) providing visual (LED) and audio (Buzzer) early warnings (alarms) when critical thresholds are exceeded, and (3) easy data access via the Internet of Things IoT platform. The implementation results show that "Shipboard Guardian" is able to detect and report temperature changes in the range of 0 oC to 50 oC and humidity of 20% to 90% with an accuracy level of 91.47. This system is expected to improve ship operational safety, minimize fire risks, and facilitate predictive maintenance on ship electrical systems.

Abstract

The hydraulic grab is an essential tool in cargo handling operations on bulk carrier vessels, particularly during coal loading activities at Muara Berau. In this study, a problem was identified when the Janus bucket hydraulic grab experienced damage that prevented it from closing properly, thereby disrupting the unloading process and causing operational delays. This research aims to identify the causes of the bucket hydraulic grab malfunction, explore solutions to overcome the issue, and formulate procedural maintenance steps in accordance with the manual book. The research employed a qualitative case study approach, combining direct observation onboard the vessel with in-depth interviews involving the ship’s engineer and electrician. The findings indicate that both internal and external factors contributed to the malfunction, including insufficient routine maintenance, piston seal leakage, severe rainfall, and forced unloading operations. These factors led to damage in several components such as receiver cables and solenoid valves, which showed reduced performance. The study concludes that strict and consistent application of maintenance procedures, as outlined in the manual book, is crucial to preventing similar failures and ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the hydraulic grab during cargo handling operations.

Abstract

Venting and temperature are important factors that can affect the efficiency and safety of the LPG loading and unloading process, especially on ships with a fully refrigerated system. This research aims to determine the effect of venting and temperature on LPG loading and unloading activities on the fully refrigerated LPG/C Prima Lautan II ship. This research uses a quantitative approach with survey methods. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression to determine the simultaneous and partial influence of the independent variables (venting and temperature) on the dependent variable (LPG loading and unloading efficiency). The analysis results show that both venting and temperature have a significant effect on loading and unloading activities. Venting contributes to keeping the pressure stable during the process, while temperature has an influence on the evaporation speed and LPG vapor pressure in the tank. The significance value for both variables is less than 0.05, indicating that statistically both have a real influence on the efficiency of LPG loading and unloading activities. The results of the research indicate that if the ventilation and handling work simultaneously well, smooth LPG loading and unloading activities will be achieved on the LPG/C Prima full refrigerated ship. Lautan II.

Abstract

The smoothness of loading via sea transportation is greatly influenced by the discipline of the ship's crew and the condition of loading and unloading equipment such as grabs. However, on the MV Natascha, there are still obstacles in the form of damaged grabs and suboptimal crew discipline, which hinder the smooth loading process. This study aims to analyze the effect of crew discipline and grab maintenance on loading smoothness at MV. Natascha. The research employed a quantitative method, involving 23 ship crew members as respondents. Data were collected through observations and questionnaires, and analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS 25. The results indicate that crew discipline has a positive and significant effect on loading smoothness with a significance value of 0.002 < 0.05. Grab maintenance also shows a positive and significant effect with a significance value of 0.004 < 0.05. Simultaneously, crew discipline and grab maintenance contribute 73.5% to loading smoothness, while the remaining 26.5% is influenced by other factors outside this study. These findings highlight the importance of disciplined human resources and regular equipment maintenance to improve efficiency and ensure smooth loading operations on bulk carrier vessels.

Abstract

Transporting container cargo by sea carries a high risk of cargo shifting and damage if containers are not positioned and lashed according to safety standards. Improper container positioning and suboptimal use of manual lashing can affect ship stability and cargo safety during voyages. This study aims to: 1). Determine the impact of container placement on the effectiveness and safety of container cargo, 2). Determine the importance of lashing as a preventive measure against damage and failure of container cargo safety functions, 3). Evaluate how the use of lashing and cargo placement conditions affect cargo safety levels. The method used is a quantitative approach with data collection through questionnaires distributed to 9 crew members of MV. Pulau Nunukan. Data analysis was performed using validity, reliability, normality, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity tests, as well as multiple linear regression analysis, t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination. The results of the study indicate that cargo placement and the use of manual lashing each have a significant effect on cargo safety levels. Simultaneously, both variables also have a significant effect with a coefficient of determination value of 85.3%.

Abstract

The issuance of a Health Book (Ship's Health Book) is a crucial component of the health quarantine monitoring system at international ports to prevent the spread of infectious diseases across borders. This study aims to analyze the implementation of Health Book issuance procedures for the vessel TB. Pacific Star II, managed by PT. Berlian Ocean Shipping within the operational area of the Class I Health Quarantine Office in Dumai. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through participatory observation during field practice, interviews, and documentation studies. The results indicate that the issuance process involves a series of physical ship inspections, crew document validation, and the use of the digital feature "Sinkarkes." Although procedures follow regulations, several technical obstacles were found, such as internet network instability in the port area and system limitations that hinder real-time data synchronization. Optimization efforts are carried out through intensive coordination between the agent and quarantine officers, along with proposals for developing offline features in the Sinkarkes system. This study concludes that the smooth issuance of the Health Book highly depends on the readiness of ship documents and the stability of the information technology infrastructure at the port.
