Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the discussion method in Indonesian language learning at SD Muhammadiyah 3 Limboto, Gorontalo Regency. The study was motivated by the need to create more active, communicative, and student-centered Indonesian language learning, particularly in developing students’ speaking, listening, critical thinking, and collaborative skills. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through classroom observation, interviews with the principal, teachers, and students, questionnaires, and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, thematic categorization, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the discussion method can support Indonesian language learning when teachers prepare clear objectives, select relevant topics, provide guiding questions, organize groups, facilitate equitable participation, manage discussion time, and close the activity with reflection and feedback. The discussion method encourages students to express opinions, listen to peers, respect different perspectives, and construct meaning through social interaction. However, several challenges remain, including students’ shyness, unequal participation, limited vocabulary, and classroom management issues. Therefore, the discussion method needs to be implemented through systematic planning, teacher facilitation, and consistent reinforcement. The study concludes that the discussion method is a relevant instructional strategy for strengthening communication skills and meaningful learning in elementary Indonesian language classrooms.

Abstract

Learning motivation plays an important role in determining students’ engagement and success in the learning process. In elementary education, particularly in Cultural Arts and Crafts (SBdP) subjects, students are expected not only to understand theoretical knowledge but also to actively participate in artistic learning activities such as singing regional songs. However, in many classroom situations, students show low motivation to participate in these activities. This study aims to improve students’ learning motivation through the implementation of the Direct Instruction learning model in regional song learning. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model consisting of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was conducted in two cycles. The participants were 26 fourth-grade students of SDN 1 Telaga Biru, Gorontalo Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, tests, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive percentage analysis. The results showed that the implementation of the Direct Instruction model significantly improved students’ learning motivation. In the initial observation, only 15.4% of students showed high learning motivation. After the implementation of Cycle I, the percentage increased to 65%. In Cycle II, students with high learning motivation reached 96%, exceeding the predetermined success indicator of 86%. These findings indicate that the Direct Instruction model provides structured learning stages that encourage students to actively participate in the learning process. Therefore, the Direct Instruction model can be considered an effective instructional strategy for improving students’ learning motivation in elementary school learning.

Abstract

This article describes the portrait of conventional learning practices during the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum at SDN 1 Telaga Biru. The study was conducted through a qualitative descriptive approach using direct classroom observation, field notes, and simple documentation during the School Field Introduction Program (PLP 1). The findings indicate that learning activities are still dominated by textbooks, teacher explanations, and question-answer routines, while the use of alternative media and digital technology remains limited. This condition reflects a gap between the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasize student-centered, differentiated, contextual, creative, and technology-supported learning, and classroom practices that remain teacher-centered. Several factors contribute to this situation, including limited practical training, uneven digital competence, teacher dependence on familiar routines, and the lack of continuous mentoring at the school level. The study concludes that curriculum transformation requires not only policy documents but also sustained teacher professional development, instructional leadership, collaborative reflection, and adequate learning resources. These findings are expected to serve as an initial reflection for prospective teachers, schools, and stakeholders in strengthening innovative and contextual learning in elementary education.

Abstract

Environmental education at the elementary level plays a fundamental role in shaping students’ ecological awareness and responsible behavior. However, students’ conceptual understanding often remains limited when learning is dominated by conventional instruction. This study aims to describe the implementation of Project-Based Learning in strengthening students’ understanding of environmental concepts within the context of the School Field Introduction Program (PLP 1). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving fourth- and fifth-grade students at SDN 17 Limboto. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation during project-based environmental activities. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Project-Based Learning enhances students’ engagement, contextual understanding, collaboration, and environmental awareness through authentic projects such as waste sorting, poster creation, and school cleanliness campaigns. The learning process helped students move from basic conceptual knowledge to reflective and applicative understanding. Therefore, Project-Based Learning can be considered an effective and contextually relevant strategy for strengthening environmental conceptual understanding in elementary education, particularly within experiential programs such as PLP 1.

Abstract

This study describes the implementation of Big Book media in improving reading skills among second-grade students within the context of the School Field Introduction Program (PLP 1) at SDN 72 Kota Tengah. The study was motivated by the low reading fluency, limited vocabulary mastery, and weak reading comprehension observed among lower-grade students when learning was conducted through monotonous and text-only approaches. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using non-participant observation, field notes, informal interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through data condensation, coding, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Big Book media strengthened students’ engagement, reading fluency, vocabulary recognition, confidence, and comprehension. The large visual display, readable text, repetitive sentence patterns, and shared-reading interaction enabled students to connect images, words, and meaning more easily. The study also introduces the concept of visual-mediated literacy engagement to explain how visual-text integration and social interaction support early reading development. Therefore, Big Book can be considered an effective and contextually relevant learning medium for improving early reading skills and creating participatory literacy experiences in elementary school PLP 1 contexts.
