Abstract

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the chronic health problems that are often experienced by the elderly and is known as the silent killer because it can cause serious complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. Hypertension is treated not only through pharmacological therapy, but also through non-pharmacological interventions, one of which is with the Benson relaxation technique, which is proven to help lower blood pressure through the body's relaxation mechanism and stress reduction. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Benson's relaxation therapy in lowering blood pressure in elderly people with hypertension. The research design uses case studies with a nursing process approach that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The study was conducted on an elderly person with hypertension in Suntalangu Village, Suela District for 3 x 24 hours. The research instrument is a sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure. The results of the initial assessment showed that the patient's blood pressure was 170/90 mmHg with complaints of headache, fatigue, and pain in the back of the head. After regular Benson relaxation therapy for 3 days, there was a decrease in blood pressure to 150/80 mmHg with reduced pain complaints and the patient appeared more relaxed. The evaluation showed that there was an improvement in the patient's physical and psychological condition as well as the patient's ability to relax independently. Benson relaxation therapy is effective in lowering blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension and can be used as a simple, safe, and independent non-pharmacological intervention to improve the quality of life of people with hypertension.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a preventive health-based physical education intervention model in improving students’ physical fitness and health awareness. The study employed a research and development (R&D) approach combined with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The development stages included needs analysis, model design, expert validation, limited trial, revision, field trial, pretest-posttest evaluation, and data analysis. A total of 30 students participated in the field trial. Data were collected using physical fitness tests, body mass index (BMI) measurements, healthy lifestyle behavior questionnaires, and observation sheets. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that the intervention model was effective in improving students’ physical fitness and health-related behavior. Students’ average physical fitness score increased from 64.5 at pretest to 78.2 at posttest, with an improvement of 13.7 points. Improvements were also found in all major fitness components, including the 12-minute run test (32.4 to 38.6), push-up (21.3 to 28.7 repetitions/minute), sit-up (24.8 to 31.5 repetitions/minute), sit and reach (21.6 to 26.9 cm), and shuttle run performance, which improved from 12.8 to 11.3 seconds. BMI distribution also changed positively, with the proportion of students in the normal category increasing from 57% to 70%. In addition, healthy lifestyle behavior scores improved across all assessed aspects, including awareness of physical activity, regular exercise habits, preventive health knowledge, and healthy lifestyle behavior. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between pretest and posttest results, supported by a moderate N-gain and high effect size.In conclusion, the preventive health-based physical education intervention model was effective in improving students’ physical fitness, BMI status, and health awareness.

Abstract

Breakfast is an essential daily meal that plays a key role in supporting both metabolic and cognitive functions. Glucose, as the brain’s primary energy source, is crucial for maintaining attention, memory, and executive function through neuronal activity and neurotransmitter regulation. This review aims to explore how breakfast consumption influences cognitive attention through mechanisms related to glucose metabolism. A narrative review approach was employed, drawing on literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar published between 2015 and 2026. The findings indicate that eating breakfast helps restore and stabilize blood glucose levels after an overnight fast, thereby supporting cognitive performance—particularly in children and young adults. In addition, the quality and nutritional composition of breakfast, especially meals with a low glycemic index, contribute to more stable glucose levels and sustained cognitive function. In contrast, skipping breakfast has been associated with reduced attention and poorer mental performance. Overall, maintaining a regular and well-balanced breakfast appears to be an important factor in supporting cognitive function through effective glucose regulation, with meaningful implications for brain health and cognitive performance.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major global health problem and one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease. Chronic hyperglycemia in diabetes plays a crucial role in the development of kidney damage, which may progress to end-stage renal disease if not properly managed. This review aims to explore the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, focusing on underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical implications. A narrative review approach was conducted using literature from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar published between 2016 and 2026. The findings indicate that persistent hyperglycemia contributes to kidney damage through multiple interconnected mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis. These processes lead to structural and functional alterations in the kidney, such as glomerular dysfunction, declining glomerular filtration rate, and accumulation of metabolic waste products. Furthermore, the coexistence of diabetes and chronic kidney disease is associated with a higher risk of systemic complications, particularly cardiovascular disease, anemia, and metabolic disturbances, which significantly impact patient outcomes. Overall, type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease have a strong and complex relationship. Effective glycemic control, early detection, and comprehensive monitoring of kidney function are essential strategies to prevent disease progression and reduce the burden of complications, highlighting the importance of integrated management in patients with diabetes.
