Abstract

This paper analyzes the practice of siri marriages and patterns of gender relations in the siri marriage family in Pekalongan City. The theoretical argument that has been developed by the local people of Pekalongan City is that siri marriage is the same as registered marriage. This qualitative research with a gender perspective uses data collection techniques, i.e: observations, interviews, and literary studies. The technique of checking the credibility of the data uses triangulation and analysis using an interactive model. The results showed that the practice of siri marriage in Pekalongan City used a model, ie: performing an akad as a legal marriage, the only difference being the absence of a Marriage Registration Officer; came to the Kiai's house together with the guardian and the witness, and 3) the akad was carried out in secret at the Kiai's house. The causes of siri marriage in Pekalongan City, namely: fear of sin, avoiding adultery, economic hardship, polygamy that is not allowed by wives, a pregnancy outside of marriage, there is no fee for legal marriage and understanding of the meaning of marriage. The practice of unregistered marriage has an impact on women and children. The pattern of gender relations in the siri marriage family in Pekalongan City is in the form of a pseudo-vertical-hierarchical relationship pattern, where the husband has a higher position than the husband's wife has the power to regulate and make decisions in the household (subordination), but the roles, functions, and responsibilities of the husband do not implement optimally, or there is a deviation of roles, functions and responsibilities. Therefore, it is necessary to build awareness for perpetrators of unregistered marriages to create a pattern of relationships that are fair and gender-equal.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze gender discrimination in child marriage in Indonesia. The discrimination is based on early marriage, namely Indonesian youth aged 20-24 years who have been married before the age of 19 years. There are two main factors used, namely gender and age groups. The age group represents the age at first marriage for Indonesian youth who are categorized as early marriage, namely the group aged less than 15 years and aged in the group 16-18 years. This study applies a bootstrap approach to the analysis of variance (ANOVA) due to the failure of the initial assumption tests on the original data. The analysis results show there are significant differences between male and female youth in the percentage of child marriage cases. Gender inequality is indicated based on the finding that young women are found to be four times more vulnerable to being trapped in child marriage than boys. In addition, the results of the analysis also indicate that young women are easier to get trapped in child marriage practices for both age groups. Furthermore, the results of the analysis also indicate that young women are more prone to be involved in child marriage when they are in the 16-18 year group.

Abstract

The World Economics Forum released the Global Gender Gap Index report 2020 which shows that women's participation in the economy is still lower than women's participation in education. This study aims to analyze how education and socio-demographic factors influence women's work participation in Indonesia. The data source used in this study is the 2019 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) from the BPS-Statistics Indonesia. The research method used is descriptive analysis and inferential analysis with the probit model. The probit model is a statistical model to see the probability of a dependent variable that is categorical (1 if a female is working and 0 if she doesn't work). The results of this study indicate that the level of education and social-demographic factors have a significant effect on the probability of female to work. The probability of female to work is higher with increasing their education. Meanwhile, the social- demographic factor that increases the probability of women to work are their status as the head of the family and age. The socio-demographic factors that tend to reduce the probability of female to work are marriage status, existence of children under five in household, and living in urban areas.
