Abstract

Inland fisheries play a vital role in providing sources of animal protein, particularly in the Lake Tempe region, Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi. This study aims to analyze the productivity of fishermen’s catches and the factors influencing their variation. The research employed a field survey with a quantitative approach through the collection of primary data, including catch quantity, fishing gear type, and fishing effort. The study was conducted on April 12, 2025, involving 30 fishermen as respondents. Data were analyzed using the Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) method and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the average CPUE of fishermen in Lake Tempe fluctuated, influenced by fishing gear type, environmental conditions, and fishing season. The highest CPUE was recorded for fishermen using traps (bubu), while the lowest was found among those using gillnets. These findings indicate significant differences in the effectiveness of fishing gear on catch productivity. Moreover, environmental factors such as local climate variation and fish stock availability also play a major role in determining productivity. The study’s results are expected to serve as input for sustainable fisheries management in Lake Tempe. Therefore, implementing environmentally friendly fishing gear and improving fishermen’s capacity in resource management are crucial. This study underscores that ecosystem-based and sustainable management approaches are essential to maintaining the livelihood of local fishing communities.

Abstract

Abstract The welfare of fishers in Indonesia, including those in Bone Regency, continues to face various challenges due to limited access to capital, fluctuations in fish prices, and vulnerability to climate change. This study aims to analyze fisheries business diversification strategies as an effort to improve the welfare of fishers and coastal communities. The research was conducted from April to May 2025 in three coastal villages of Bone Regency, involving 60 fisher respondents. Data were collected through structured interviews, observations, and focus group discussions (FGDs). The analysis employed a descriptive qualitative method and simple economic analysis to evaluate additional income from diversification activities such as fish processing, seaweed farming, and digital marketing. The results show that business diversification can increase fishers’ income by 25–40% compared to relying solely on marine catches. In addition, strengthening fisher group institutions and improving access to digital marketing training play a significant role in enhancing the competitiveness of local products. This study recommends a coastal economic development model based on business diversification and digital technology, aligned with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ blue economy program.

Abstract

Local wisdom represents a system of knowledge, norms, and practices derived from the interaction between communities and their environment, including the utilization of fishery resources. This study aims to explore various forms of local wisdom among the fishing communities of Lake Tempe, Wajo Regency, and their role in supporting sustainable fisheries management. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, using data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and literature review. Thematic analysis was conducted by categorizing findings based on customary rules, fishing practices, sanction mechanisms, and social values that uphold ecosystem sustainability. The results reveal that the Lake Tempe community maintains traditional regulations such as prohibiting fishing during spawning seasons, using environmentally friendly fishing gear, and allocating fishing zones based on customary knowledge. Furthermore, social sanctions serve as a mechanism for ensuring community compliance with collective norms. These findings confirm that local wisdom not only sustains ecosystem balance and fish stocks but also strengthens social cohesion among fishers. The discussion emphasizes the need to integrate local wisdom into formal policy through a co-management model involving local governments, fishing communities, and other stakeholders. In conclusion, local wisdom holds significant potential as a key pillar for sustainable fisheries resource management in Lake Tempe.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of the fisheries sector in supporting food security among coastal communities in Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. Data were collected from March to June 2025 through a survey involving 150 respondents, consisting of fishers, fish farmers, and fish processing business actors. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches, with data collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and field observations. The analysis was conducted using descriptive quantitative methods, t-tests, and regression analysis to examine differences and factors influencing household food security in fisheries-based communities. The results showed that the fisheries sector made a significant contribution to food security in terms of animal protein availability, fish price affordability, and dietary diversity. The average household fish consumption reached 38 kg per capita per year, which is higher than the national average. The most influential factors affecting food security were household income, education level, and fisheries business diversification. These findings emphasize that the fisheries sector plays a strategic role in achieving sustainable food security in coastal areas

Abstract

Bone Regency is one of the coastal areas in South Sulawesi with abundant fisheries resources, both in marine and freshwater environments. This study aims to analyze fish species diversity, catch potential, and environmental factors influencing fisheries sustainability in the waters of Bone Regency. Data were collected through field surveys, fisher interviews, and environmental parameter measurements such as temperature, salinity, and water pH. The research was conducted from March to May 2025 at several water sites, including the coastal area of Bone Bay, the Walanae River, and several community aquaculture ponds. The results showed that more than 25 dominant fish species were caught by fishers, with major contributions from small pelagic fish (sardinella, anchovy), demersal fish (grouper, snapper), and freshwater species (tilapia, milkfish). Data analysis revealed a moderate to high species diversity, with Shannon-Wiener index (H’) values ranging from 2.5 to 3.2. Environmental factors played an important role in determining fish availability, particularly during the transitional season. Fishers’ catches showed a declining trend compared to the past five years, presumably due to overfishing pressure and habitat degradation. These findings highlight the need for ecosystem-based fisheries management and the adoption of environmentally friendly fishing gear. Education and fisher assistance programs are highly recommended to ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources in Bone Regency.

Abstract

Indonesia, as the largest archipelago in the world, has a vast potential for fisheries resources, with a coastline stretching over 81,000 kilometers and waters rich in marine biodiversity. The fisheries sector plays a vital role in national food security and is also a source of income for millions of people relying on fishing, aquaculture, and fish processing activities. However, the sustainability of the fisheries sector faces serious challenges, including overexploitation, marine habitat degradation, and inefficiencies in the supply chain, leading to economic and environmental losses. This literature review aims to synthesize recent academic literature on sustainable fishery supply chains in Indonesia, focusing on regulatory and public policy aspects, quota-based resource management strategies, supply chain optimization in the downstream sector, and multi-stakeholder coordination through the Pentahelix model. The review shows that the integration of quota-based policies, the application of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM), and coordination among Pentahelix stakeholders are three key pillars that must be implemented simultaneously to achieve the sustainability of Indonesia's fisheries sector. This study is expected to provide practical recommendations for policymakers, academics, and practitioners in designing a fishery supply chain system that is not only economically efficient but also socially equitable and environmentally sustainable.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the marketing system of barracuda fish pempek at Dapur Makassar, a small-scale fisheries-based enterprise located in Makassar City. The research focuses on identifying marketing channels, calculating marketing margins, and evaluating marketing efficiency. A case study method was applied using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Primary data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation involving the business owner and resellers, while secondary data were obtained from relevant literature and institutional reports. The findings show that Dapur Makassar utilizes two marketing channels: direct sales from producer to consumers and indirect sales through resellers. The direct channel incurs lower marketing costs (Rp 595.7) compared to the reseller channel (Rp 1,716.7). However, reseller distribution expands market reach beyond Makassar to other regions such as Kendari, Palu, Kalimantan, and Java. The marketing margin in the reseller channel is Rp 10,000 per unit (buying price Rp 25,000 and selling price Rp 35,000. This study concludes that combining direct marketing with organized reseller networks and digital marketing strategies can improve both efficiency and competitiveness of fisheries-based SMEs.
