Abstract

AbstractIn 2020, Morocco became the fourth Arab state that normalized ties with Israel in that year. The normalization deal is brokered by the US under Trump administration. This article aims to explain the reason behind Morocco’s decision to normalized ties with Israel. This article utilizes conceptual framework of transactionalism as the tool of analysis with qualitative-explanative research methods.  The findings of this article indicate that Morocco was willing to normalize ties with Israel in exchange for US recognition of Morocco sovereignty over Western Sahara. Moreover, the US was giving additional incentives in the form of financial investment and military equipment sale. The US recognition of Morocco sovereignty over Western Sahara is problematic because it is contrary to the UN resolution. However, US success in brokering the normalization deal has improved Trump’s image. The Moroccan government also managed to gain popularity due to recognition over Western Sahara.

Abstract

Gender relations and Islam occupy a distinctive space in the succession of village heads. This research will highlight gender relations with Islam and the involvement of female nationalists and Islamists in village head elections. This field research uses a qualitative research method of narrative data analysis. Data were obtained from unstructured interviews, documents, focus group discussions (FGD), and literature. This research found that there is a relationship between gender and Islam in the village head elections in Kudus Regency in 2022. This relationship can be seen from the involvement of Islamist and nationalist women in village head elections, as voters, candidates, to the success team. The conflict between adat and Islam which does not allow women to be involved in leadership succession, and even involved in the wider public sphere, is not a barrier. Kudus Regency women continue to respect Islam in the formal dimension, while gender equality between men and women is considered a form of justice.

Abstract

This study examines the roles of Indonesia’s major Islamic organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), in environmental diplomacy at both national and global levels through the lens of Green Islam. This research uses a field research method with a qualitative-descriptive approach.. The findings reveal that Green Islam rooted in the principles of tawhid, khalifah, and Amanah provides an ethical foundation for both organizations to develop environmental jurisprudence, ecological education, and public advocacy. Muhammadiyah demonstrates a rational-progressive approach through initiatives such as Fikih Air, Fikih Energi, Eco-Mosque programs, and the Green Ramadan campaign. Conversely, NU emphasizes a spiritual-contextual approach through Fikih Iklim, Green Pesantren, and the Santri Environmental Movement. Both organizations actively participate in international forums such as COP-26 to COP-28, collaborate with global institutions, and contribute to the Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change. The study concludes that NU and Muhammadiyah function as significant non-state actors in Indonesia’s environmental diplomacy, combining religious values, education, and transnational networks, thereby strengthening Indonesia’s position as a promoter of ecological ethics in international relations.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the problem of Islamic fundamentalism and analyze the thoughts of Islamic fundamentalist figures, namely Abul A'la Al-Maududi, Hasan Al-Banna, and Taqiyuddin An-Nabhani about the ideal state. Qualitative methods are used in this research with data obtained through books, journals, scientific articles, and other related sources. The results showed that the ideal country according to the thoughts of Abul A'la Al-Maududi, Hasan Al-Banna, and Taqiyuddin An-Nabhani is a country based on Islam. These figures made Rasulullah when he founded the state of Medina until the time of Khulafaur Rasyidin as the reference for the ideal state. Because for them, at that time Islam was used as the main reference and foundation of life and could solve all problems, including problems in living as a state. These figures also reject the separation between religion and state (secularism), and agree to make sovereignty in God's hands. According to them, religion has an important role in the state. In addition, they also placed Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi  as an important part of an Islamic state. This research aims to explain the problem of Islamic fundamentalism and analyze the thoughts of Islamic fundamentalist figures, namely Abul A'la Al-Maududi, Hasan Al-Banna, and Taqiyuddin An-Nabhani about the ideal state.
