Abstract

This study investigates the impact of collaborative learning on student engagement and creative expression in the context of teaching poetry, specifically among fourth-semester English Department students at STIT Miftahul Midad Lumajang. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative research design, the research involved comprehensive observations and semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth insights into students' experiences and perspectives. The findings reveal that collaborative discussions not only foster a deeper understanding of poetic texts but also create a supportive learning environment that encourages students to share diverse interpretations and ideas. Participants reported that engaging with peers enriched their comprehension and inspired them to express their own creativity through poetry writing. Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of peer feedback in refining students' artistic skills, illustrating how constructive interactions enhance their overall learning experience. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the necessity of incorporating collaborative learning strategies in poetry instruction, as such practices not only unlock deeper meanings in literary texts but also cultivate essential skills that prepare students for both academic success and personal growth.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look into how the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) affects students' writing abilities. The usefulness of GTM in improving writing abilities is still up for question, but it has been widely utilized in language training since it places an emphasis on sentence translation and the application of grammatical rules. A sample of students who were taught utilizing GTM was included in the quantitative study design. To gauge the extent to which students' writing abilities had improved, pre- and post-test evaluations were carried out with an emphasis on coherence, sentence structure, and grammar accuracy. The findings showed those students' writing abilities, especially in terms of sentence structure and grammatical precision, had significantly improved. Nonetheless, there was less of an impact on pupils' capacity to generate concepts and write creatively. According to the results, even though GTM can improve writing's technical elements, but other techniques might be required to encourage students' writing's originality and concept growth.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Task-Based Learning (TBL) as a modern approach to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for ninth grade students at MTs Miftahul Midad Lumajang. The research investigates the effectiveness of TBL in enhancing students' English language proficiency, particularly in the areas of speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Using a qualitative method. The data from student surveys, interviews, classroom observations, and teacher feedback. The findings reveal that TBL significantly improved students' language skills, with particular gains in speaking fluency and writing coherence. Students showed increased motivation and engagement in the learning process, as the task oriented activities provided meaningful, real world applications of language. However, challenges such as time management, classroom organization, and unequal participation were noted. Teachers also reported the need for further professional development to effectively implement TBL strategies. Overall, this research suggests that TBL can be an effective and engaging approach to TESOL in Indonesian secondary school contexts, offering a more student centered, communicative alternative to traditional grammar focused methods. The study provides recommendations for teachers and school administrators to integrate TBL more widely in the curriculum for enhanced language learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between students’ self-efficacy and critical thinking in argumentative writing. Employing a quantitative correlational research design, the study investigates how students’ confidence in their writing abilities influences their capacity to construct logical, well-supported arguments. The findings reveal a strong positive correlation (r = 0.684, p < 0.01) between self-efficacy and critical thinking, suggesting that students with higher self-efficacy tend to engage more effectively in analytical reasoning and evidence-based argumentation. Additionally, a paired t-test indicates a substantial improvement in both self-efficacy (mean difference = 15.88, p < 0.001) and critical thinking (mean difference = 17.22, p < 0.001) following targeted writing interventions. These results highlight the importance of integrating self-efficacy-enhancing strategies into writing instruction to foster students’ confidence and critical thinking skills. Despite its contributions, the study acknowledges limitations related to sample size (N = 32) and external influencing factors. Future research should explore broader and more diverse student populations to validate these findings further.

Abstract

The 2013 Curriculum marks a significant shift toward a learner-centered approach in English language teaching, aiming to empower students through the use of innovative instructional strategies that foster critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. It emphasizes active student involvement and the development of functional language skills beyond the classroom. However, its implementation presents challenges such as limited teacher training, classroom management difficulties, and resource constraints. This study explores how the 2013 Curriculum strategies are applied in English language teaching using a qualitative method, including interviews and classroom observations. The findings reveal that approaches like collaborative learning, task-based learning, project-based learning, and inquiry-based learning positively influence student engagement and language proficiency. While both students and teachers responded positively to the curriculum, the success of its implementation relies heavily on adequate professional development and institutional support. The study highlights the need to equip educators with sufficient knowledge, resources, and pedagogical skills to ensure effective application of the curriculum’s learner-centered strategies in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ experiences in learning English speaking through the implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the research focuses on how students perceive, respond to, and engage with speaking activities that involve physical actions and commands. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and students’ reflective notes. The findings indicate that TPR creates a more interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere, reduces students’ anxiety in speaking English, and helps them remember vocabulary and expressions more effectively. Students reported that the use of gestures and physical movement facilitated better comprehension and increased their willingness to participate in speaking tasks. However, some challenges were also identified, such as limited vocabulary coverage and the need for teacher creativity in designing varied activities. Overall, this study suggests that TPR can be an effective strategy to enhance students’ speaking ability and foster positive learning experiences in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of contextual role-play strategies in improving students’ speaking skills in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes. The participants were 34 fourth-semester students from the Islamic Economics and Islamic Banking Study Programs at the Institut Agama Islam Sunan Kalijogo Malang. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through two learning cycles: the first cycle focused on asking and responding to requests, and the second cycle focused on giving opinions in an Islamic finance context. Data were collected through observation, written reflections, and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that contextual role-play effectively enhanced students’ confidence, strengthened their mastery of Islamic finance vocabulary, and increased active participation in oral communication. Students responded positively to this method, as they found it relevant, enjoyable, and reflective of real professional situations. These findings are supported by previous studies that highlight the importance of contextualization in ESP-based speaking instruction.
