Abstract

Trauma places a heavy psychological burden on Muslim communities in Indonesia, particularly in Riau Province, where socioeconomic difficulties, marital breakdown, occupational adversities, and personal loss converge to produce profound suffering. While spirituality is increasingly recognized as a meaningful resource for healing, existing literature offers limited empirical insight into how Indonesian Muslim trauma survivors actually draw on Islamic values in their recovery. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Muslim trauma survivors across three sites in Riau  Pekanbaru, Kampar, and Siak  examining how Islamic spiritual practices function as a framework for counseling and healing. Using purposive sampling, twelve primary informants were selected from an estimated population of two hundred Muslim trauma survivors; two Islamic counselors and one religious scholar were added for source triangulation. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis, and analyzed thematically following Miles and Huberman's interactive model. Four major themes emerged: (1) the phenomenology of trauma within an Islamic life context; (2) Islamic spiritual practices as active healing mechanisms; (3) Islamic counseling as a structured therapeutic pathway; and (4) spiritual resilience and posttraumatic growth. Practices including dhikr, tahajjud prayer, Qur'anic recitation, ruqyah, and participation in pengajian circles proved to be psychologically meaningful healing interventions rather than mere ritual observance. The integration of tawakal, sabar, and tawbah within counseling settings further strengthened survivors' psychological resilience. This study offers a contextually grounded framework for Islamic spiritual counseling, with practical implications for Muslim mental health practitioners, counselors, and policymakers in majority-Muslim regions.

Abstract

Trauma remains a pervasive psychological challenge, particularly among Muslim individuals whose cultural and spiritual frameworks shape how distress is experienced and expressed. Conventional trauma interventions, largely derived from Western secular paradigms, often fail to address the embodied and spiritual dimensions of healing within Islamic contexts. This study introduces and examines the preliminary effectiveness of Magnetic Focus Therapy (MFT), a novel spiritual-somatic intervention that integrates body memory principles with Islamic counseling values. Employing a Single-Subject Research (SSR) A-B-A design, three Muslim clients in Pekanbaru, Indonesia presenting with diverse trauma backgrounds including bereavement, bullying, and family-related distress received three structured MFT sessions incorporating dhikr grounding, Qur'anic reflection, and tawakkul meaning reconstruction. Dependent variables included self-reported anxiety, body tension, negative thoughts, and emotional distress, assessed using a 0–10 rating scale at each phase. Visual analysis of data across the A1 (baseline), B (intervention), and A2 (follow-up) phases revealed consistent and clinically meaningful reductions across all four indicators for each client, with average reductions ranging from 57% to 75%. Social validation data further corroborated these gains, with clients reporting improved emotional regulation, spiritual calmness, and reduced somatic tension. These findings provide initial empirical support for MFT as a culturally responsive, brief, and structured trauma intervention suitable for Islamic counseling settings. Implications for Islamic psychotherapy, embodied counseling practice, and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract

Bullying in educational settings constitutes a serious psychosocial risk, with Indonesia reporting a rapid escalation in documented cases. Despite the availability of psychological intervention frameworks, secular counseling approaches have demonstrated limited cultural resonance in majority-Muslim contexts. This study systematically reviews the literature on bullying from an Islamic perspective, with the aim of synthesizing scholarly evidence on how Islamic values can be integrated into guidance and counseling services as a framework for bullying prevention. A thematic literature review was conducted using Google Scholar, DOAJ, Dimensions, and Crossref, with search strings combining ('bullying' OR 'school bullying' OR 'cyberbullying') AND ('Islam' OR 'Islamic values' OR 'Islamic counseling' OR 'maqasid sharia'). Seventy-one sources published between 2017 and 2024 were screened; 22 met the inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase framework yielded five major themes. Findings indicate that Islamic jurisprudence provides a comprehensive normative prohibition against bullying through Qur'anic injunctions (QS Al-Hujurat 49:11; QS Al-Humazah 104:1; QS Al-Ahzab 33:58) and prophetic traditions. The maqasid al-shari'ah framework identifies bullying as a direct threat to five protected interests: religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property. The values of rahmah (compassion), 'adl (justice), ukhuwah (brotherhood), tazkiyah (purification), and karamah (human dignity) map coherently onto established psychological constructs of empathy, fair treatment, social connectedness, self-regulation, and respect all demonstrated to reduce bullying propensity. The integration of Islamic values in school counseling is not merely a normative proposition; it offers a culturally grounded and empirically plausible framework that complements social-psychological theories. Schools in Muslim-majority contexts are encouraged to adopt integrative counseling models that embed these values into preventive and restorative interventions.

Abstract

his study examines how Islamic (sharia) values and local customary law (adat) have come together in the customary prohibition of single-organ (orgen tunggal) entertainment in Koto Petai Village, Kerinci Regency, Jambi. Orgen tunggal refers to solo electronic-keyboard performances that are inexpensive to stage and, in this community, are associated with late-night crowds, alcohol, and brawls. Customary leaders (ninik mamak) have enforced the ban since 2003. Rather than asking whether the prohibition is justified, the study asks how villagers understand, justify, comply with, and at times question it, and what the case reveals about the workings of communal customary law. The research used a qualitative case study with a phenomenological orientation. Data were generated through in-depth semi-structured interviews with purposively selected participants customary leaders, a religious leader, a village official, and ordinary villagers alongside non-participant observation and review of relevant local materials during 2024. Interview transcripts were analysed thematically with the support of NVivo 12, and trustworthiness was strengthened through source and method triangulation, member checking, and an audit trail. Five themes were constructed: a religious moral order as the ground of the ban; the fusion of sharia and adat into a single unwritten norm; customary social control through deliberation (musyawarah) and graduated sanctions; broad compliance accompanied by quieter negotiation and differing views; and communal customary law as a living, binding order. The case suggests that acculturation here is less a finished state of harmony than an ongoing negotiation in which religious and customary authority reinforce one another while still leaving room for differing community voices.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of spiritual reflection-based Islamic Religious Education (IRE) learning in strengthening students' religious well-being. Religious well-being, conceptualized through Ellison's (1983) multidimensional framework, encompasses an individual's perceived closeness to God, existential meaning, and spiritual connectedness, all of which profoundly influence psychological, social, and educational outcomes. Despite growing international scholarship on reflective pedagogy and spiritual education, empirical research integrating muhasabah-based reflective practices within quasi-experimental Islamic educational settings remains scarce in the Indonesian secondary education context. This study addresses this gap by employing a quantitative quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design involving 68 senior high school students (n = 34 experimental; n = 34 control) from a vocational high school in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Participants were aged 15–17 years (M = 16.2), with 52.9% female and 47.1% male. Data were collected using a validated Religious Well-Being Scale (30 items; α = .87), structured observations, in-depth interviews, and learning documentation across eight instructional sessions. Results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in religious well-being among the experimental group (M pretest = 68.42; M posttest = 86.75; N-Gain = 0.71, high category) compared to the control group (M pretest = 67.88; M posttest = 74.36; N-Gain = 0.29, low-to-moderate category). Independent samples t-test confirmed a significant between-group difference (t(66) = 7.84, p < .001, d = 1.90). Qualitative findings identified four dominant themes: spiritual awareness, gratitude enhancement, emotional regulation, and religious commitment. These findings provide empirical support for integrating spiritually transformative pedagogical approaches within Islamic Religious Education curricula, contributing to both educational theory and practice.

Abstract

Religious moderation has emerged as a critical framework for sustaining social harmony within Indonesia's increasingly diverse urban communities. This study explores the lived experiences of multicultural Muslim communities in Pekanbaru, Riau, in practicing religious moderation and cultivating social tolerance. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research engaged 20 key informants selected through purposive sampling from a population of approximately 300 multicultural Muslim residents in Pekanbaru. Informants represented diverse social roles including religious leaders, community figures, Muslim youth, university students, educators, and general public members. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and were analyzed using thematic analysis guided by the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Four major themes emerged from the analysis: (1) Islamic values as the foundation of social harmony, (2) lived experiences of religious moderation in multicultural settings, (3) practices of social tolerance and mutual respect, and (4) community resilience through collective moderation. Triangulation through source, method, and member checking confirmed the trustworthiness of findings. The study reveals that religious moderation in Pekanbaru is not merely a theological concept but a lived social practice rooted in Islamic teachings of brotherhood, compassion, and balanced conduct. These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of how Islamic moderation operates at the grassroots level and offer practical implications for community development, Islamic education, and multicultural policy in Indonesian urban contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

Digital culture now shapes how Generation Z communicates, studies, and manages everyday relationships, and concern about its psychological cost has grown alongside it. This study asks whether digital culture raises anxiety among Islamic Guidance and Counseling (BKI) students, and whether social media addiction accounts for part of that relationship. Working from Uses and Gratifications Theory, Media Dependency Theory, Social Comparison Theory, and a cognitive-behavioral perspective, we tested a mediation model with 220 BKI students (59.5% female; most aged 21 to 23) at Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau, Indonesia. Participants completed a 45-item Likert questionnaire (15 items per construct) delivered online over four weeks. Analysis used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS 4, and the indirect effect was estimated through bias-corrected bootstrapping with 5,000 subsamples. The measurement model met all reliability and validity criteria, and the structural model fit the data well (SRMR = 0.052). Digital culture predicted social media addiction (β = 0.650, 95% CI [0.556, 0.744], f² = 0.735) and anxiety (β = 0.298, CI [0.174, 0.422]). Social media addiction predicted anxiety (β = 0.462, CI [0.342, 0.582]) and partially mediated the digital culture–anxiety link (indirect β = 0.300, CI [0.212, 0.388]), carrying about half of the total effect (50.3%). The model explained 42.3% of the variance in social media addiction and 51.8% in anxiety. For Islamic counseling, the pattern argues for interventions that address the cultural pressures behind compulsive use, not symptoms alone, with the principle of wasatiyyah (moderation) offering a culturally grounded frame for that work.
