Abstract

Passing ability is a fundamental motor skill that plays a crucial role in basketball performance. However, preliminary observations indicated that the passing ability of students at the Leviathan Basketball Club was relatively low. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of problem-based learning in improving students’ basketball passing skills. A quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants consisted of 21 students who received problem-based learning instruction focused on basketball passing skills over 12 sessions. The data collection instrument was a basketball passing skill test developed based on indicators of fundamental passing techniques and administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using a Paired Sample T-Test with the assistance of SPSS software. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ passing ability following the implementation of problem-based learning, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that problem-based learning is effective in enhancing basketball passing skills. This study contributes to the understanding of instructional models in physical education and sports, particularly in improving fundamental motor skills. Further research is recommended to explore the application of problem-based learning to other sports skills and broader participant groups.

Abstract

Endurance is a key physical component influencing performance in basketball, particularly in school-based competitive contexts. This study aimed to examine the aerobic and anaerobic endurance profiles of junior high school basketball players as a basis for training program development. A descriptive survey design was employed involving ten male basketball players (aged 14–16 years) from Santa Maria Junior High School, Kediri. Aerobic endurance was assessed using the 20-m multistage fitness test to estimate VO₂max, while anaerobic endurance was measured using the Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and categorized based on normative standards. The results showed that aerobic endurance (VO₂max) was predominantly in the fair category, with 40% of athletes classified as poor and only 20% classified as very good. In contrast, anaerobic endurance was generally high, with 80% of athletes classified as very good. These findings indicate an imbalance between aerobic and anaerobic endurance capacities. The study highlights the need for greater emphasis on aerobic conditioning within school basketball training programs to support recovery and sustain performance during competition.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major nutritional challenge affecting children in many developing countries, including Indonesia. The Free Nutritious Food Program (MBG) implemented at SDN 042 Tarakan aims to address this issue by providing nutrient-dense meals to lower-grade students (grades 1–3). This qualitative study seeks to examine the effectiveness of the MBG program in improving students’ nutritional status and reducing stunting cases. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), participatory observations, and document analysis involving six homeroom teachers, the school principal, the MBG coordinator, and parents. The findings reveal notable improvements in students’ weight and height after participating in the program. Most students developed healthier eating habits, although challenges remain concerning the consistency of these habits at home. The study also highlights logistical and budgetary constraints that hinder optimal program implementation. Despite these limitations, the MBG program demonstrates strong potential in enhancing students’ health and overall well-being. Further research using quantitative methods is recommended to assess the long-term impact of MBG and its scalability to other schools facing similar nutritional issues

Abstract

This study aims to examine the healthy lifestyle patterns of Physical Education students and to identify the dimensions requiring priority attention. A quantitative descriptive survey design was employed, involving 38 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire covering four dimensions of healthy lifestyle behavior based on the World Health Organization framework: physical activity, nutrition, sleep patterns, and general health practices. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics to obtain mean scores, percentages, and categorical classifications based on the Healthy Lifestyle Assessment Toolkit. The results showed that 52.63% of students were categorized as having a good healthy lifestyle, with a mean score of 101.47 (69.98% of the maximum score). However, analysis across dimensions revealed that sleep patterns had the lowest level of achievement (65.49%), indicating an imbalance in lifestyle implementation. These findings suggest that although awareness of healthy lifestyle behaviors exists among students, their consistent application across all dimensions remains limited. Therefore, improving sleep quality and implementing integrated, campus-based health promotion programs are essential to achieving a more balanced and sustainable healthy lifestyle among Physical Education students.

Abstract

Modern pentathlon is a multidisciplinary sport that combines physical endurance, technical skills, and psychological readiness within a single competitive setting. At the regional level, provincial championships play a strategic role in evaluating athlete development, identifying participation patterns, and assessing the effectiveness of coaching systems. This study aimed to describe athlete participation and performance at the 2025 Indonesian Modern Pentathlon Provincial Championship (Madiun Mayor’s Cup) using official competition data. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design with a retrospective approach. Secondary data were obtained from the official championship results book, covering all registered athletes who participated in the competition. The subjects included male and female athletes from U-9 to senior age categories, competing in biathle, triathle, and laser run events across individual, relay, and mixed relay formats. Data analysis was conducted descriptively using frequency and percentage calculations to examine participation by age group, gender, event, and region of origin, as well as performance indicators including athlete rankings, podium distribution, and regional dominance. The results showed that athlete participation was highest in the U-9 to U-15 age groups, indicating a strong foundation of early-stage development in modern pentathlon. However, a noticeable decline in participation occurred at the junior and senior levels, suggesting challenges in sustaining athlete progression to higher competitive stages. Performance analysis revealed that podium achievements were distributed across several regions, with Madiun City, Surabaya City, Pasuruan Regency, Kediri City, and Malang Regency demonstrating the most consistent dominance. Differences in performance between events and age groups reflected variations in training quality, competition experience, and athlete readiness. In conclusion, the 2025 Madiun Mayor’s Cup Provincial Championship functioned not only as a competitive event but also as an effective evaluation platform for regional modern pentathlon development. The findings emphasize the importance of data-driven coaching strategies and sustainable long-term athlete development pathways to enhance competitive performance

Abstract

Physical education in practice is still heavily influenced by a competitive and performance-oriented paradigm, which often neglects the philosophical and humanitarian dimensions of the learning process. This situation has the potential to cause physical and psychological stress for students, thus suboptimally achieving the goal of physical education as a means of developing a holistic human being. Based on these issues, this study aims to analyze the relevance of the Wu Wei principle in Taoist philosophy as an alternative philosophical foundation for physical education in a modern pedagogical context. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research design, which examines classic Taoist texts, particularly the Tao Te Ching, as well as various academic literature discussing the philosophy of education, physical education, and contemporary sports pedagogy. Data are analyzed through content analysis and a philosophical hermeneutic approach to interpret the meaning of Wu Wei and its implications for physical education learning practices. The results of the study indicate that the dominance of the competitive paradigm in physical education is correlated with the emergence of burnout phenomena, decreased motivation, and neglected mental well-being of students. Conversely, a learning approach that emphasizes movement awareness, balance, and non-competitive activities in line with the Wu Wei principle has the potential to strengthen humanistic values, improve psychological well-being, and create a more meaningful learning experience. This study concludes that the integration of Wu Wei principles can serve as an alternative philosophical framework for developing a more humanistic, balanced physical education that is oriented toward character building and harmony between body, mind, and environment.

Abstract

Evaluation of learning is generally focused on the achievement of predetermined objectives, which may overlook various impacts that emerge naturally during the learning process, particularly in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK), which is holistic in nature. This study aims to reveal the unexpected outcomes of PJOK learning using the Goal-Free Evaluation (GFE) approach. This study employed a qualitative evaluative case study design involving six student leaders from grades VII–IX, selected purposively. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings identified five major unexpected outcomes of PJOK learning. Discipline and responsibility emerged as the most dominant theme, reported by all participants, while leadership, social interaction, and negative emotional experiences were identified by the majority of informants. Problem-solving skills also emerged as an additional outcome, although less frequently reported. These results indicate that PJOK learning produces a wide range of affective, social, and cognitive impacts beyond formal learning objectives. This study highlights the importance of using a Goal-Free Evaluation approach to capture both positive and negative learning outcomes more comprehensively. The findings contribute to strengthening the evaluation paradigm in PJOK by emphasizing authentic learning impacts that are often overlooked in goal-based evaluations.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of philosophy of science as a basis for the formation of values and morals in physical education practices. The research background is based on the increasingly visible moral crisis phenomenon in educational environments, including in physical education learning, which tends to be solely oriented towards physical aspects. This study uses a qualitative approach with the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method for seven national and international journal articles published between 2021 and 2025 and obtained through Google Scholar. The review process was carried out systematically, referring to the PRISMA stages. The results of the study indicate that the philosophy of science through its ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions provides a conceptual foundation that confirms that physical education not only functions to develop physical abilities, but also plays an important role in the formation of students' values and morals, such as discipline, sportsmanship, honesty, responsibility, and cooperation. The findings also indicate that the weak application of philosophical foundations in physical education learning contributes to the decline in the internalization of students' moral values. This study concludes that the integration of the philosophy of science in physical education practices is an essential need to strengthen the formation of values and morals and support the achievement of educational goals holistically.
