Abstract

The increasing frequency of LGBT individuals expressing themselves in the midst of stigma and discrimination against LGBT raises questions about how LGBT individuals use social media as a platform to express themselves, manage privacy, describe the experience of expressing themselves online, feedback and its impact on their behaviour in real life. This will be examined using the concepts of Self-disclosure, Communication Privacy Management and Stigma Theory. This research is a qualitative study using Interpretive Phenomenology Analysis (IPA) with in-depth interview techniques. The researcher found that the characteristics of social media platforms (anonymity and LGBT-friendly of Twitter, Instagram's interesting pictures and videos, and Tiktok as a youth social media with a wide range) become criteria in choosing and managing self-disclosure on social media. Friending action through the block, hide, close friend, implicit caption features is an effort to manage boundaries. Forms of self-disclosure include sexual orientation (coming out, romance, sexual life, coming out in RL, roles in relationships) and campaigns/advocacy (Self-acceptance', 'Stop bullying', 'Gender and Sexual Diversity', 'Human rights' and LGBT Culture). LGBT individuals choose to focus on positive responses only. Then there is the negotiation of LGBT identity with religion related to internalised stigma after self-disclosure. There is a good feeling of being famous. Furthermore, turbulence in the management of private information on social media makes informants review and make new rules in expressing themselves. Researchers suggest that LGBT individuals use the features provided by social media to the fullest to achieve commonality of meaning and reduce the possibility of being stigmatised due to the lack of commonality of meaning. Researchers suggest studying the management of private information of LGBT individuals on social media with various levels of popularity in future research.

Abstract

Fashion is one of the most searched and purchased categories by consumers in Tokopedia. Unfortunately, in the first quarter of 2023, Tokopedia got a very significant decrease in the number of visitors compared to the second quarter of 2022. This research aims to find out the relationship between exposure to product information and exposure to sales promotions and the decision to repurchase fashion at Tokopedia. The theory used cognitive process theory and behavioral learning theory. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a total sample of 100 respondents. The analytical technique used Kendall Tau-b. The results of this research found that there was a positive and significant relationship between product information exposure (X1) and sales promotion exposure (X2) with the repurchase decision (Y) of fashion at Tokopedia with a weak correlation coefficient. The results of the research descriptively show that the intentional level of consumers in seeking about content and the usefulness is high. Unfortunately the level of consumer involvement in interacting with uploaded content is low. Tokopedia can change its social media marketing strategy which has a higher level of correlation coefficient. If Tokopedia still continue to use this strategy, they should make content which can increase consumer interaction.

Abstract

Nowadays people are increasingly paying attention to body care. Based on consumer needs, the development of the body care business is growing rapidly, including hand and body lotion products. Marina carried out various strategies, namely social media marketing and instilling a positive image to compete with other brands as proven by Marina always being included in the Top Brand Award since 2015. In 2021, Marina experienced a decrease in consumer loyalty for hand and body lotion, while Marina's competitors experienced an increase in loyalty. This study aims to determine the relationship between exposure to social media marketing and brand image with consumer loyalty Marina hand and body lotion. This research is quantitative research with the type of explanatory research and using a non-probability sampling technique with a total of 100 respondents. The statistical test used is Kendall's Tau B. The theory used is Social Customer Relationship Management. The results of hypothesis testing using Kendall's Tau B test analysis show that exposure to social media marketing and consumer loyalty Marina hand and body lotion has a very significant relationship with a significance value of 0.003 <0.01 and a correlation coefficient of 0.273. Brand image variable has a very significant relationship with consumer loyalty Marina hand and body lotion with a significance value of 0.000 <0.01 and a correlation coefficient of 0.473.

Abstract

This research is anchored in the discourse of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), which advocates for the enactment of the Criminal Code that entails the criminalization of LGBT+ groups within the virtual public space of Twitter. The primary objective of this study is to elucidate how populist discourse is strategically employed in the Twitter virtual text disseminated via the @PKSejahtera account, as well as the responses of users who engage with these tweets. Critical discourse analysis is employed as the analytical framework to scrutinize the tweets, with the research corpus consisting exclusively of @PKSejahtera tweets that discuss the Criminal Code and LGBT+ issues during the period between May and December 2022. The author relies on the critical discourse analysis methodology developed by Christian Fuchs, which specifically examines discourse texts within the Twitter platform. The research findings unveil the utilization of populist ideology by the Prosperous Justice Party, accompanied by additional discourses such as legal and political discourse, social discourse, and religious discourse, all aimed at promoting the ratification of the Criminal Code through the cultivation of negative sentiments towards the LGBT+ community, underpinned by discourses that advocate for punitive measures against them. Among these three discourses, the Prosperous Justice Party primarily relies on legal and political discourse to advocate for the adoption of the Criminal Code that encompasses penalties for LGBT+ individuals. Meanwhile, religious discourse is predominantly utilized in interactive exchanges, all of which support the discourse propagated by the Prosperous Justice Party. The conflicting discourses that emerge primarily originate from legal and political discourse. Furthermore, the interactivity of these tweets reveals the existence of several contradictory discourses that stand in opposition to the discourse propagated by the PKS. Nevertheless, the prevailing trend within this interactivity is the dominance of discourses aligned with the majority ideology that harmonize with the PKS's agenda to pass the Criminal Code, which includes provisions pertaining to the punishment of LGBT+ individuals.

Abstract

Women's empowerment is a process whereby women who previously did not have the ability to make choices and decisions in life, eventually gain this ability. This film offers an alternative idea by conveying the message of feminism, namely women empowerment in the form of a female striptease dancer character who is brave, strong, and able to make decisions in life, amongst the dominant understanding of striptease dancers being looked down upon, ignored, and ostracized. This research aims to describe the depiction of the reality of the life of striptease dancers, dominant ideology, and the representation of women empowerment through the female striptease dancer characters featured in the Hustlers film. This research uses representation theory, standpoint theory, and performance theory, and uses John Fiske's semiotic analysis method, which will analyze at the reality, representation, and ideology level. The research resulting women have strategies to improve the economic situation by putting aside stereotypes of striptease dancers, their willingness to learn more, broaden skills, and raise public awareness about women's equality. New ideological findings were also found in the form of transformative gender equality, women’s participation, women’s democratization, women’s language, and women’s subordination in men’s opression.

Abstract

The improvement of technology provides easy access to establish relationships, one of which is the emergence of online dating applications such as Tinder. There are various reasons to use this application, it starts from expanding relationships to get into romantical partners, that makes 210 million people active as users in this application. However, the increasing cases of violence such as sexting, cyber harassment to fraud committed by certain individuals who use online dating applications cause anxiety for the users. Therefore, researchers examined further to find out how the dialectic occurs and the strategies used by couples who meet through the online application Tinder in dealing with the dialectic that occurs. In this study, researchers conducted data analysis using phenomenological methods and in-depth interview analysis techniques. Then, the theories used in this study are the Theory of Relational Dialectics by Lexlie Baxter and Barbera M. Montgomery, the Theory of Self Disclosure by West and Turner, and the Theory of Social Information Processing by Joseph B. Walther. The results of this study showed that the informants used the dating application Tinder for several reasons such as curiosity, finding new friends to life partners. Couples formed through these dating apps go through a series of stages that shape the dynamics of the dialectic experience as a couple in a romantic relationship. Where it is also related to the concepts from internal relational dialectics such as connectedness and separatedness, certainty and uncertainty, and also the openness and closedness. Furthermore, to deal with various dilemmas in establishing romantic relationships through this dating application, researchers found several responses and strategies used by informants, namely by balancing dialectical tension, carrying out temporary separation strategies, and separation of segments in life. By using these strategies, informants can relieve relationship tensions that arise and tend to accept and use the opportunity to increase understanding between partners and also strengthen the closeness of the relationship.

Abstract

Prank content is currently still a trend using controversial ideas marked by pranks targeting parents on Nino Kuya's YouTube channel which is watched and liked by many viewers. This study aims to describe the audience's interpretation of prank content targeting parents on Nino Kuya's YouTube channel. This study uses a constructivist paradigm with reception theory and active audience theory. John Fiske's semiotic analysis method is used to analyze preferred reading and Stuart Hall's reception analysis method is used to determine the interpretive position of the audience of teenagers and parents. The dominant meaning in this content is (1) children may prank their parents, (2) educational and entertaining prank messages, (3) reasonable parental reactions to get angry and forgive children's pranks, (4) parents are allowed to control dominant child, and (5) healthy and normal parent-child relationship. The results of the study show the similarity in meaning that pranks target parents tend to be negotiated. Meanwhile, the diversity of meanings arises when the informant interprets the elements of parental reactions and parental communication patterns where the child informants tend to reject parental dominant control. Meanwhile, parent informants accept the dominant meaning offered. Furthermore, half of the informants tended to be dominant, a few negotiated, and the others rejected the healthy and normal relationship between parents and children in the prank content. Overall, it was found that meaning tended to be in a negotiating position regarding the dominant meaning offered because of the variant informants in the form of children and parents as well as differences in the culture of the informant's family and Nino Kuya's family.

Abstract

The discrimination experienced by women gave influenced to a various movement of resistance. The feminism movement is a form of women's action in demanding equality between women and men, especially towards the role of women as a social human being. Gender inequality is still a matter social issue that we are still facing through nowadays. This study aims to see the representation of women’s Role in the music video of ‘Positions’ by Ariana Grande. The concept of a video clip itself is uniquely packaged but has a hidden message related to the existence of feminism. This study aims to reveal the semiotic meaning of the video clip. The researcher uses the semiotic theory of John Fiske to see that behind the video clip has a representation towards 3 levels according to John Fiske's Semiotics, which is the level of reality, representation and ideology. The conclusion of this study shows the meaning of the signs that lead to Post Modern Feminism, which has the aim of inviting other women to dare to have a role in public or domestic portion with confidence and freedom. Abstract

The phenomenon of buying virtual products for online games is happening among elementary school children in Indonesia. This is inseparable from the influence of external push factors such as the gaming content they watch and also their peers. Virtual buying can be seen as a good aspect from a sales and marketing perspective. However, children are understood as passive consumers in the market because their understanding of consuming goods is still immature until they reach their teenage years. Elementary school children who are immature in mind and mentally should not over-purchase virtual product. Nowadays, many game companies use YouTube influencers to promote their products. In addition, with a group of peers who have the same gaming hobby, this encourages children's attitudes in developing themselves as consumers in the market. Along with the wider children's environment, there is a need for children to find a place in the age group they want to reach. This study aims to explain the effect of the intensity of accessing gaming content on YouTube and peer group communication on spontaneous purchases of virtual products for online games among elementary school children. This study uses a quantitative approach. The theory used in this study is the theory of Consumer Socialization, with a sampling technique in the form of convenient sampling. The results of hypothesis testing with multiple linear regression tests show that the intensity of accessing game content on YouTube and peer group communication has no influence on impulse buying of virtual products for online games among elementary school children

Abstract

The development of media in Indonesia is so rapid as marked by the increasing number of online media. However, this is not followed by an increase in the quality of reporting. There are still violations committed by the media which have resulted in complaints to the Press Council because online media prioritizes speed and virality. In addition, news content also still features negative reporting which can have a negative impact on the psychology of society. This can lead to a decrease in public trust in the mass media. One way to minimize the negative impact on psychology and increase public trust in the media is to apply constructive journalism. One theory that is relevant to constructive journalism is the social responsibility theory of the press. Theoretical studies and constructive journalism are analyzed in this study which focuses on how to implement constructive journalism at JEO Kompas.com using the quantitative content analysis method. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of constructive journalism in JEO Kompas.com news. This study shows that most of the news is hard news (76.7%). Kompas.com JEO news is also dominated by socio-cultural topics as much as 39.5%. Furthermore, most of the news (53.5%) includes the event rubric type. Through descriptive reports and cross-tabulation results, the results of the study show that JEO Kompas.com news tends to implement some elements of constructive journalism with a percentage of 75.2%. News that implemented all elements was found to be less (10.8%) than news that did not implement any elements at all (13.9%). The most implemented elements are all Future Orientation elements (46.5%). Meanwhile, the elements that are mostly implemented are Co-Creation elements. There is not a single piece of news that implements all the elements of Empower People or Co-Creation. Apart from that, the implementation of constructive journalism is also determined by the news format, topic, and type of rubric. Therefore, it is hoped that journalists and the media can prioritize the implementation of constructive journalism in journalistic work so as to increase public trust and at the same time improve the quality of people's lives.
