Established in 2019, it publishes research in English Literature, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, and Translation Studies, embracing both qualitative and quantitative approaches within the humanities and social sciences. Taking its name from Albion, the ancient poetic term for Britain, the journal reimagines the island as a symbol of movement, translation, and encounter, exploring how English and its cultural forms travel, transform, and take on new meanings across global archipelagos. It particularly encourages perspectives from Southeast Asian, transoceanic, and postcolonial contexts that rethink English in its global and local dimensions. Submissions, written in English and open to faculty, students, and community partners, undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process to ensure academic integrity and quality.

Abstract

The practice of living together without marriage is common in some communities. Marriage serves to legalize the relationship between men and women, allowing them to share a home legally. The term "cohabitation" refers to couples who live together without being married. However, cohabitation can lead to various issues, including infidelity, conflicts, and even dangerous situations. This study employs a descriptive analysis method, utilizing library research techniques grounded in Sigmund Freud's developmental theory (psychoanalysis). In the novel The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison, the consequences of cohabitation manifest as infidelity, disputes among characters, and the deterioration of friendships, ultimately leading to murder. Analyzing the novel through intrinsic and extrinsic approaches reveals that the events affecting the character Todd Gilbert directly result from cohabitation. This situation leads to the development of a new self-concept for Todd and significantly influences his attitude in addressing both internal and external conflicts.

Abstract

This research explores the role of long-term strategic management planning in sustaining the Selasar Sunaryo Art Space in the Indonesian artistic field. It looks at how an arts institution stays afloat for 25+ years despite ongoing funding struggles. Using the approach of qualitative research, the study relies on deep interviews with several key actors, participatory observation, and a literature study. It is based on Henry Mintzberg’s concepts of emergent and deliberate strategies concerning planned action and adaptability to change. It also involves Pierre Bourdieu’s artistic field theory, understood through the lenses of Michael Grenfell and Hans van Maneen, examining the conflict between autonomous and heteronomous forces of the artistic world. The report’s most notable conclusion is the need to create institutional structures with flexibility and resilience. The study concludes that long-term sustainability in the artistic field depends on a strategy that is both structured and flexible, balancing artistic ideals with real-world challenges.

Abstract

Slavery was an integral part of the history of the founding of the United States. This phenomenon gave rise to views of racism and classism that disregarded the essence and dignity of human beings who were not considered human. This study aims to uncover the practices of racism and classism depicted in the film Emancipation (2022). This article employs a descriptive qualitative method with a behavioral approach within a socio-political framework. Data collection techniques were conducted by watching and analyzing the film Emancipation (2022). The data obtained consisted of facts, descriptions, and information about the issues depicted in the film Emancipation (2022). The results of this study indicate that racism and classism during the era of slavery were complex phenomena that were interrelated. The physical violence and dehumanization depicted in the film align with the definition of slavery, which emphasizes the use of power and violence to maintain control and exploitation.

Abstract

This study analyses the elements of magical realism in The Midnight Library by Matt Haig using Wendy B. Faris’s five key characteristics of magical realism: the irreducible element, the phenomenal world, unsettling doubts, merging realms, and disruptions of time, space, and identity. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method to examine how magical experiences are portrayed through the protagonist Nora Seed as she navigates an in-between space between life and death. The findings show that Faris’s framework is applicable to this contemporary Western novel, expanding the use of magical realism theory beyond its Latin American roots. Moreover, the narrative technique of stream of consciousness is also identified as a key device that enhances the internalization of magical experiences. This research contributes to the broader discourse on magical realism in global literature and its relevance to psychological and existential themes.

Abstract

This research examines the depiction of key archetypal figures from Norse mythology in Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, utilizing Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology as the theoretical framework. The analysis focuses on three central characters: Odin, Thor, and Loki, interpreted as representations of the archetypes: The Wise Old Man, The Hero, and The Trickster. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method and interpretative content analysis. The findings indicate that the novel reconfigures their symbolic meanings within a narrative structure that reflects the psychological dynamics of contemporary individuals. Odin is presented as a contemplative spiritual leader, Thor as a hero who transforms failure through introspection, and Loki as the embodiment of creative chaos. Through this archetypal lens, the novel effectively conveys the structure of the human unconscious collective. This research concludes that Norse mythology serves as a bridge, linking the symbolic legacy of the past with modern narratives and contemporary existential exploration.

Abstract

This study investigates the forms and meanings of jargons used by casters during the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) 2021 Korea Grand Finals, focusing on how these specialized terms function within the esports speech community. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed three YouTube videos of the final match to identify and classify 39 jargon terms based on Yule’s (2020) theory of word formation. The findings revealed that the most dominant word formation process was compounding, accounting for 15 of the 39 terms, followed by borrowing, etymological adaptation, clipping, coinage, acronyms, and conversion. The meanings of these jargons were interpreted through semantic analysis and were supported by contextual usage and, where relevant, specialized gaming sources. The results demonstrate that jargon in the esports domain not only facilitates efficient communication among players, casters, and fans but also reinforces group identity and shared knowledge. This research highlights how language evolves in digital and competitive environments, emphasizing the creative and social functions of jargon in online gaming culture.

Abstract

This study analyzes Joshua’s speech, a member of the K-pop group SEVENTEEN, at the UNESCO Youth Forum 2023 using Teun A. Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The research investigates how discourse structures in public speeches convey messages of education and youth empowerment. A qualitative descriptive method was applied to examine macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The findings show that the macrostructure emphasizes education as a transformative force; the superstructure presents a well-organized format aligned with international speech conventions; and the microstructure employs semantic clarity, inclusive syntax, stylistic consistency, and rhetorical devices such as metaphors and hashtags to build emotional resonance with global youth. Audience reactions on YouTube were further analyzed through the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) theory, demonstrating pride, awareness, and affective engagement. The study concludes that Joshua’s speech successfully conveyed educational values and inspired global participation, affirming that popular culture figures can act as effective agents of social change through discourse.
