Abstract

This research aimed to analyse the linguistic form, types, meaning, and function of a language variation of register dealing with Covid-19 in The Jakarta Post online news published in 2020 - 2022. Register, especially related to the covid-19 case, became something interesting to be examined in The Jakarta Post online news due to the new term of a language variation during the pandemic of covid-19. This research was classified as qualitative descriptive research. The data were collected through interpretation and documentation, which contained various registers dealing with covid-19 in The Jakarta Post online news. Then, the collected data were classified based on the types of registers and the linguistics form of register. After that, the function and the meaning with contextual meaning based on the types of the register are analysed. Based on the result, seven types of registers dealing with covid-19 are found in this research. The seven types of registers dealing with covid-19 were the types of virus, types of vaccine, types of syndrome, types of test, types of countermeasure, types of carrier, and types of zone.Keywords: Register, covid-19, language variation, online news.

Abstract

A noun phrase is a phrase that may occur within one single word or phrase with a noun as a head. A noun phrase can act as the subject, object, or complement of a clause or as a prepositional complement. This research focused on finding out the translation shift of level shift in noun phrase translation that occurs in “Raya and the Last Dragon,” to reveal thetranslation techniques applied in the translation of noun phrases and to assess the translation accuracy of noun phrase translation from the SL to the TL. The theories used in this research were Catford’s theory of translation shift, Molina and Albir’s theory of translation technique, and Nababan’s theory of translation accuracy. This research was descriptive qualitative research. This research showed that 115 noun phrases were found in the data and their translation into Indonesian. The analysis showed that there were six kinds of translation shift of level shift in translating the data. There were 14 translation techniques. In terms of accuracy, 104 data (90.4%) were accurate, 6 data (5.3%) were less accurate, and 5 data (4.3%) were inaccurate.Keywords: noun phrase, translation shift of level shift, translation technique, translation accuracy

Abstract

The research is titled “Directives Speech Act in The Hunger Games Movie” The research aimed to find out and classify the types of directive speech acts used in The Hunger Games Movie and explain the linguistic form of each type of directive speech act based on the contexts. The method applied was the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were in the form of words and sentences that contain directive speech acts. The technique of collecting data was conducted by collecting the data from The Hunger Games movie, classifying types of directive speech act, and describing the form of each type of directive speech act. Furthermore, the technique of data analysis was based on Kreidler's (1998) classification of directive speech acts. The types are commands, requests, and suggestions. The next step was explaining the form of each type of directive speech acts based on the pragmatic contexts. The findings of this study showed that request interrogative is the most dominant type of directive used with a total number 117 utterances or 32,47% in percentage.Keywords: Pragmatic, Speech Act, Directive speech act

Abstract

A punch line is an unexpected and humorous conclusion to any show, situation, or story. This is the most crucial thing in humor. It must be retained in the translation. Therefore, the choice of translation technique must be more careful. This research was aimed at analyzing the type of translation techniques on each punch line in the Werewolves Within movie. In this research, the researcher applied Molina & Albir’s (2002) theory of translation techniques. This research was classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data collection technique is document analysis, namely by analyzing the movie subtitle entitled The Werewolves Within. The data analysis technique was ethnographic, namely by differentiating the data and non-data, taxonomizing them, analyzing their components, and analyzing their dominant findings. The results showed that ten out of twenty-four types of translation techniques were used in this research. The dominant type of translation technique was established equivalence, and the least one was addition, adaptation, implicitation, concision, particularization, modulation, and compensation. Abstract

The aim of the research is to know the types of directive utterances of Cinderella Movie 2015. Besides, the researcher wanted to know the functions of directive utterances in the Cinderella Movie 2015. This research used Kreidler’s theory to analyze those utterances in the Cinderella Movie 2015. The researcher used a qualitative approach as a research design. The data of this research were utterances which were taken from the Cinderella movie 2015 released on March 13, 2015. Then, the researcher classified the collected data based on the types of directives. After that, the researcher analyzed based on the function of directive utterances. The researcher analyzed the utterances in the movie which focused on the types of directive utterances. The research result was found about 35 directive utterances in Cinderella Movie 2015. The directive utterances in the movie were divided into three types: command, request, and suggestion. The command consisted of demand, direct, order and forbid. The request consisted of direct, order and forbid. Besides, the suggestion consists of advice and recommend. Based on the research, it was found seventeen (48,5%) while the request was found nine utterances (25,7%). Abstract

The research aimed to find out and classify the types of commissive speech acts used by the characters in Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie. The study explained the functions of each type of commissive speech act based on the contexts as well. The method applied was the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that contain commissive speech acts. Hereafter, the technique of data analysis was based on Kreidler's (1998) classification of commissive speech acts. The next step was explaining the functions of each type of commissive speech acts based on the pragmatic contexts. The research found seven types of commissive speech acts used by the characters in the movie of Kung Fu Panda 2, such as promises, pledges, agrees, refuses, volunteers, offers, and threats. The most dominant type of commissive speech act used by the characters was the act of agreeing. Abstract

The purposes of this study were to describe the types of commissive speech acts, and to describe how commissive speech acts used in the movie. This study was a descriptive-qualitative research. This research focused on commissive speech act expressed by the characters found in the movie. The step to get the data is collecting the data from the script of Cinderella movie which contain commissive speech act, reading the dialogue, and classifying the data based on the types of commissive speech act based on Searle and Vanderveken (1985) categories. The next step is classifying non verbal communication. Then, the use of commissive speech act was analyzed within the pragmatics framework. The types of commissive speech act found in Cinderella movie are refuse, threaten, promise, accept, offer, bet, commit, consent, and assure.  Keywords: Speech Acts; Commissive; Pragmatics

Abstract

Frightening expressions are the ones causing fear. Fear in any narrative story is very important. Accordingly, this research was aimed at analyzing the type of translation techniques and translation ideology on frightening expressions in Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories. This research applied Molina & Albir’s (2002) theory of translation technique. The theories of translation ideology by Venutti (2000) and Hoed’s (2003) were employed in this research as well. This research was qualitative descriptive. The data collection technique was document analysis. It is conducted by analyzing the frightening expressions in two original short stories entitled The Black Cat and The Fall of The House of Usher and their Indonesian translation entitled Kucing Hitam and Misteri Rumah Keluarga Usher. The result was that there were fourteen out of twenty-four types of translation techniques. This included Discursive Creation, Established Equivalence, Deletion, Generalization, Modulation, Addition, Explicitation, Paraphrase, Particularization, Adaptation, Concision, Description, Transposition, and Compensation. The dominant type of translation technique is Establish Equivalence. The most dominant translation techniques in The Black Cat were established equivalence while the most dominant techniques in The Fall of the House of Usher were discursive creation. Both the translations of frightening expressions in The Black Cat and The Fall of the House of Usher grasped domestication ideology.

Abstract

The aims of the study are: 1) to know whether there is a certain meaning of slang words used by young people. 2) to figure out the advantages will be gained from the analysis of the slang words used by Indonesian Young Peole by using the theory of dialectology and sociolinguistics. The objects or the data used in the study are slang words used by Indonesian Young People from some sources. This study was finished in State Polytechnic of Madiun. The method that is used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The data used in this research is slang words used by Indonesia People from some sources. The result of the research shown that some of slang words used by Indonesian Young People can be used to express a secret language, a f friendly language, an informal language, and for sexual languae. The young people as the user of it face the new experience with word creation, unconsciously they enrich the language.This research has so many list of datas related to slang words as the new vocabularies in their speech. It can be used to develop the method and the concept used in learning language, culture, and social life.
