This research focuses on the theory of translation shifts and accuracy of translation. The data were analyzed through the theory of translationby Catford  (1965), namely unit shifts, structural shifts, intra-system shifts, class shifts, and level shifts from English (SL) to Indonesian (TL). The problems discussed in this research are the types of translation shifts used in translating the novel “Percy Jackson and Olympians: The Lightning Thief”as well as how accurate the translation is. To solve the problem, a qualitative descriptive method was applied in this research. The data is taken from the novel “Percy Jackson and Olympians: The Lightning Thief”written in English and translated into Indonesian. The result of data analysis found that there were as many as 107 data. The most dominant data found in the novel is unit shift with 50 data, structure shift with 36 data,  intra-system shift with 8 data, class shift with 8 data, and  level shift with 4 data. In addition, the researcher also found 104 data were considered accurate translations, 3 data were considered less accurate translations, and none were inaccurate. Keywords: Translation, translation shift, translation accuracy

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive research analyzes the speech acts in automotive advertisements aired on Indonesian television from 2021 to 2022 and explores their functions. The study focuses on the types of speech acts prevalent in automotive advertisements and their roles in persuading consumers and achieving sales goals. Data were collected from automotive advertisements on television programs in Indonesia and classified into assertive, directive, expressive, and commissive speech acts. The functions of these speech act in Indonesian automotive advertisements were identified as demonstrating products with a positive image, persuading consumers to make purchases, developing emotional and entertaining appeals, and building trust among potential consumers. By employing appropriate speech acts, advertisers can effectively convey the benefits and attractiveness of their products to consumers, potentially increasing sales and achieving marketing success. The research findings reveal that commissive speech acts were the most frequently used in motorcycle advertisements, aiming to motivate immediate purchases by promising benefits or additional advantages. On the contrary, assertive speech acts were the least utilized in automotive advertisements on television because this type of  speech acts focuses more on conveying information or facts so it is less on persuading or influencing the behavior of the audience. This study sheds light on the dominance of commissive speech acts in Indonesian automotive advertisements and their significant role in influencing consumers by emphasizing the advantages and benefits of the promoted automotive products. Understanding and employing appropriate speech acts can greatly enhance marketing efforts in the automotive industry.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies and functions of request speech acts used in the movie entitled The Man From Toronto. A request speech act is a directive speech act whose purpose is to instruct the listener to do something. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. All data in this study were taken from conversations between characters that contained speech acts in the form of requests and transcribed into text form. Then, the collected data is classified based on the request strategy  and functions. Based on the results of the study, there were seven out of eight request strategies in this study. The performative request strategy was not found in this study. The seven strategies found in this research are hints (26 data), abilities/willingness/permissions (6 data), suggestory formulae (5 data), wishes (4 data), desires/needs (6 data), obligation statements (4 data), and imperatives (25 data). The most dominant strategy of request is hints strategy. Hints are needed because there are differences in social status including power and distance among the characters in the movie. The lack of use of the wishes strategy and statement of obligation is caused by the requester who prefers to use the imperative strategy where it is considered very easy and the request will be more easily understood by the listener. The four functions of request found in this research are request for information, request for action, request for goods, and request for permissions. The most dominant function is the request for action that is conducted by the characters whose social status is higher than the addressee.  Keywords: Speech act, Request, Request Strategies, Request Functions, Movie
