Abstract

This study investigates the interplay of stylistic patterns, code-switching, and metaphorical pragmatics in shaping cultural identity in contemporary Indonesian poetry, adopting a qualitative empirical approach through the analysis of twenty poems published between 2020 and 2025. Utilizing purposive sampling, the corpus encompasses works from both emerging and established poets, reflecting diverse regional, social, and generational perspectives. Data collection combined textual compilation with contextual metadata, while analysis employed a coding schema integrating stylistic, morphological, and pragmatic features, validated through expert review and inter-coder reliability. Findings reveal that code-switching and code-mixing are strategically deployed to negotiate hybrid identities, signaling local heritage, cosmopolitan sensibilities, and generational positioning, whereas metaphorical devices serve pragmatic functions that embed ethical, social, and historical meanings. Morphological innovations and phonostylistic features enhance semantic density and aesthetic impact, highlighting the deliberate orchestration of linguistic resources. The study demonstrates that contemporary Indonesian poetry functions as a semiotically rich site for cultural expression, providing theoretical and methodological insights into the analysis of hybrid linguistic strategies and the dynamic construction of cultural identity in literary texts.

Abstract

This empirical qualitative study investigates the semiotic representation of local wisdom in Southeast Asian folk narratives across Malay, Bugis, and Thai communities, integrating textual, performative, and ritualized data to examine how ethical, ecological, and social knowledge is encoded and transmitted. Using purposive sampling, the research collected oral narratives, manuscripts, visual artifacts, and direct observations of storytelling and ritual performances, complemented by semi-structured interviews with community elders and knowledge holders. Data analysis employed thematic and semiotic content analysis grounded in Saussurean, Peircean, and ecosemiotic frameworks, coding indexes, icons, and symbols across multimodal contexts. Results demonstrate that multimodal semiotics—including gestures, costume motifs, vocal modulation, and symbolic repetition—function as pedagogical and ethical devices that reinforce comprehension and memory among participants. Comparative analysis highlights both functional universality and cultural specificity, with symbolic motifs conveying ecological stewardship, moral responsibility, and social norms consistently across communities. The study further shows that digital and performative adaptations preserve semiotic density while expanding interpretive reach. The findings contribute to theoretical frameworks of semiotics, cultural pedagogy, and knowledge transmission, offering methodological guidance for future empirical research on folk narratives.

Abstract

This study investigates language shift and youth slang within digital communication, examining how adolescents and young adults (aged 15–24) utilize social media platforms Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter to produce, disseminate, and negotiate semiotic meaning. Employing an empirical mixed-methods design, data were collected through naturalistic observation of 2,500 social media posts, content scraping of slang expressions, and 40 semi-structured online interviews, enabling triangulation of textual, visual, and conversational semiotic elements. Quantitative analysis revealed differential frequency and platform-specific distribution of slang categories, while qualitative findings highlighted multifunctional deployment of humor, intimacy, rebellion, and topical innovation as core semiotic roles. Influential factors driving adoption included peer endorsement, platform affordances, algorithmic exposure, cognitive engagement, and socio-cultural context, with temporal dynamics and network centrality accelerating lexical innovation. Findings underscore that language shift in digital environments is an emergent, socially regulated, and contextually mediated process, reflecting both identity negotiation and cultural adaptation. This research contributes a robust framework for understanding digital language evolution, offering insights into youth sociolinguistics, semiotic function, and the interplay of social, technological, and cognitive determinants in contemporary communication.

Abstract

This research examines cultural memory and postcolonial perspectives in modern Indonesian novels through a non-empirical qualitative research design grounded in close reading and thematic-interpretive analysis. Drawing on cultural memory studies and postcolonial theory, the study investigates how Indonesian fiction constructs remembrance as a contested narrative process shaped by trauma, ecological imaginaries, diasporic displacement, and institutional heritage politics. The findings indicate that novels function as mnemonic spaces where colonial violence persists through fragmented temporalities, familial transmission of trauma, and symbolic struggles over monuments, museums, and cultural routes. Literary representations complicate civic and state-centered historiographies by foregrounding silenced indigenous voices and ethical tensions surrounding the narration of historical suffering. The analysis further demonstrates that cultural memory circulates not only through institutional infrastructures but also through vernacular practices such as ritual continuity and food heritage, expanding the scope of postcolonial remembrance beyond official commemoration. By positioning Indonesian novels as counter-archives of colonial afterlives, this study contributes theoretically to debates on collective memory and methodologically to interpretive approaches in postcolonial literary criticism.

Abstract

This study investigates politeness strategies in multicultural urban communities through an empirical qualitative pragmatic design based on naturally occurring conversational data and ethnographic observation. The analysis demonstrates that urban speakers employ indirect requests, mitigated refusals, layered apologies, humor, and collective framing as adaptive facework resources in contexts marked by cultural heterogeneity and interactional uncertainty. Findings indicate that indirectness functions as pragmatic caution, enabling relational alignment without presuming shared normative expectations, while humor operates as an affiliative tool that simultaneously carries intercultural risk. Institutional environments such as workplaces, service encounters, faith-based spaces, and digital platforms further shape politeness realization by imposing hierarchical constraints and medium-specific pressures. Quantitative distributions of coded strategies confirm the centrality of mitigation and preparatory moves in high-imposition speech acts. The study advances politeness theory by emphasizing the emergence of hybrid urban norms generated through contact, mediation, and symbolic sensitivity. Methodologically, it contributes a discourse-pragmatic framework that captures politeness as a negotiated civic practice sustaining multicultural coexistence.

Abstract

This study examines the history and development of Islamic organizations in Banyumas, Central Java, with particular focus on Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) from the colonial period to the contemporary era. The research aims to analyze the historical foundations, organizational transformation, and socio-religious contributions of these organizations in shaping local Islamic dynamics. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach integrating historical and sociological perspectives. Data were collected through literature review, document analysis, organizational archives, and interviews with local religious leaders and organizational figures. The findings reveal that the emergence of Muhammadiyah and NU in Banyumas was closely linked to the region’s Islamization process and the evolving socio-religious landscape of the early twentieth century. Over time, both organizations developed distinct institutional characteristics while maintaining significant influence in education, religious outreach, social welfare, and community empowerment. Their sustained presence demonstrates a strong capacity to adapt to changing social, political, and cultural conditions. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah and NU function not only as religious institutions but also as important actors in the construction of Islamic civil society and local social transformation in Banyumas.

Abstract

This study analyzes the existence of Saung Angklung Udjo from a macro perspective and its role in strengthening Sundanese culture amid the challenges of modernization. The growing influence of globalization has created pressures on the sustainability of local cultural identities, making adaptive preservation strategies increasingly important. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature review design based on scholarly publications related to Sundanese culture, angklung, cultural preservation, tourism, and globalization. The findings indicate that Saung Angklung Udjo functions as a cultural preservation center, an educational institution, a cultural tourism destination, and a medium of cultural diplomacy. Its contribution to strengthening Sundanese culture is reflected in the transmission of local values through artistic regeneration, participatory cultural education, and the promotion of the principles of silih asah, silih asih, and silih asuh. The institution has also maintained its relevance through performance innovation, digital engagement, educational tourism, and international collaboration. These strategies demonstrate that Saung Angklung Udjo serves as an adaptive and sustainable model for preserving local culture while responding to contemporary social change.

Abstract

Cirendeu Traditional Village in Leuwigajah Subdistrict, Cimahi City, represents a distinctive indigenous community situated within the rapidly urbanizing Bandung Metropolitan Area. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of socioeconomic change in Cirendeu and examine how Pasundan cultural resilience functions as an adaptive framework for responding to modernization. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with an ethnographic design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary analysis. The findings indicate a transition from a subsistence-based agrarian economy toward diversified economic activities, including cassava-based creative industries, cultural tourism, entrepreneurship, and digital economic practices. Despite these transformations, the community continues to preserve Sundanese values, customary institutions, local ecological knowledge, and the principles of Sunda Wiwitan. Cultural resilience operates through selective adaptation, enabling community members to engage with technological innovation, formal education, and market expansion while maintaining cultural continuity. The concept of Melek Zaman, Bergerak Mapan reflects an adaptive form of modernity in which economic progress, social mobility, and cultural preservation coexist. The study highlights the strategic role of cultural resources in supporting sustainable community development amid accelerating urban and socioeconomic change.

Abstract

This article develops a theoretical framework of digital folklore as vernacular ecology, social validation system, and platform-mediated behavioral structure within contemporary participatory media environments. The study employs a non-empirical qualitative design based on systematic literature synthesis from folklore studies, media communication theory, and digital culture scholarship. Findings indicate that digital folklore emerges through ecological configurations of vernacular practices shaped by distributed participation, algorithmic mediation, and infrastructural constraints that reorganize cultural expression beyond territorial boundaries. Social validation operates as a ritualized mechanism in which engagement metrics such as likes, shares, and comments function as contemporary forms of communal recognition, reinforcing repetitive cultural patterns and stabilizing meaning across networks. Platform behavior further structures folkloric production through algorithmic ranking, interface design, and recommendation systems that selectively amplify certain expressive forms while marginalizing others. The study concludes that digital folklore is not merely a transformation of traditional folklore into digital media, but an emergent cultural system generated through the interaction of users, platforms, and computational logics. The proposed framework integrates repetition, variation, and validation as core analytical principles for understanding vernacular culture in digital ecosystems and contributes to methodological refinement in digital humanities and folklore studies.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Kepasundan values into the historical heritage of the Monument of the Struggle of the West Java People and evaluates its implications for regional macroeconomic development. Employing an empirical qualitative case study design supported by secondary socioeconomic data from 2015 to 2023, the research analyzes historical documents, tourism statistics, economic reports, and cultural heritage records through thematic and interpretive content analysis. The findings reveal that Kepasundan values are embedded within the monument through historical narratives, collective memory construction, and cultural representation that strengthen local identity and heritage significance. The study further demonstrates that the cultural value of MONJU has been transformed into economic value through heritage tourism development, creative economic activities, and cultural consumption practices. Evidence indicates continuous growth in tourist visits, creative business formation, and tourism related revenue associated with the monument. At the macroeconomic level, heritage preservation contributes to regional income generation, employment expansion, and creative economy growth while supporting inclusive development objectives. The study concludes that Kepasundan based heritage preservation functions as both a cultural asset and a strategic development resource that promotes sustainable regional development in West Java.
