Journal of Linguistics and Social Sciences
Journal of Linguistics and Social Sciences (JLSS) is an open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes original research, conceptual papers, and reviews addressing the intersection between language studies and social sciences. The journal aims to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and scholarly exchange among linguists, educators, sociologists, anthropologists, communication specialists, and other researchers interested in the role of language in society. The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to, the following areas: Theoretical and Applied Linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, and language teaching and learning. Language and Society: language policy and planning, language and identity, multilingualism, language and culture, language and gender, and language variation and change. Language and Education: curriculum design, language assessment, teacher professional development, and language pedagogy in multilingual and multicultural contexts. Translation and Interpreting Studies: translation theory and practice, cultural translation, and translation technology. Social Sciences Perspectives: communication studies, cultural studies, social psychology, education, sociology of language, and anthropology of communication. Interdisciplinary Research: studies combining linguistic analysis with social, cultural, or technological dimensions in addressing contemporary issues. JLSS welcomes submissions from researchers, practitioners, and academicians that contribute to the advancement of linguistic and social science scholarship, with both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

<![CDATA[ In this scholarly exploration, we delve into the distinguished Kurdish scholar Mala Abdulkarim Mudarris, known as "Nami," and his unique contribution to Kurdish literature. Despite his significant poetic accomplishments, Nami never compiled a dedicated collection of his works, making his extensive contributions particularly noteworthy. As the first Kurdish scholar to author a poetry book titled 'Bade w Arwzi Al Zaman,' Nami holds a prominent place in literary history. His multifaceted prowess as a writer and poet is evident in his dedication to both his sacred faith and the nuanced interpretation of the Quran. This discourse unfolds in two chapters, first introducing Mudarris and Nami's exegesis, and then exploring the intricate interplay of poetry within Nami's commentary. Through this endeavor, the study enriches Kurdish literature, enhances Quranic understanding, and establishes a profound link between Islamic faith and the cultural tapestry of Kurdistan.]]>

<![CDATA[This study entitled (The Game of Time in Atai Nahai's Novel (The Bet of Halala's Luck) in which the genre of time is the center of the study. At the same time, the concept of time, and time as a prominent and influential genre of the novel, and then the relationship between time and the novel, has a great impact on the novel, to the extent that the author can not give up time in writing the novel. The presentation of techniques that lead to playing with parts of time creates a kind of breakdown in time, which creates aesthetics in the novel text that attracts the reader's attention. The study followed the descriptive analytical approach, and the necessary examples are presented for this purpose.]]>

<![CDATA[All Gender is one of the factors that can influence the way a people used a language. Gender is a characteristic of men and women that influences their social environments. people have various styles of language when communicating with people with different social classes in society. Therefore, the researcher chose to analyze the women’s language used by Erin, an English teacher who tried to change his students' point of view in the movie entitled The Freedom Writers. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research design it investigates the utterances of women’s language feature used by Erin as the main character in Freedom writers movie by using human as the instrument. In content analysis, the researcher watch and read to understand the movie, listing the utterances by Erin as the main character in Freedom Writers movie. Then the researcher analyzed by identifying the data which were categorized as type of women’s language feature. Analyzing the data based on Lakoff’s theory: lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, ‘empty’ adjectives, precise color terms, intensifiers, ‘hypercorrect’ grammar, ‘superpolite’ forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. From the data analysis, the result of this study showed that: (1) there are eight type of women’s language feature used by Erin as the main character in freedom writers movie consisted lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, ‘empty’ adjectives, intensifiers, ‘hypercorrect’ grammar, ‘superpolite’ forms and avoidance of strong swear words. (2) the dominant type used by Erin in freedom writer movie is “hypercorrect” Grammar.]]>

<![CDATA[The most widely utilized educational tool across all grade levels is the textbook. Visual images are just one of the many crucial elements in a textbook. Textbook images serve a crucial purpose to improve students' learning and comprehension as they aid in the implementation and visualization of abstract or difficult ideas. Understanding multimodality is necessary in order to understand the meaning of an image. Thus, multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) is the most suitable approach for this research because it will evaluate parts of visual image elements in full detail. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of certain English textbooks are most dominant and how visual pictures might be represented using multimodal discourse. The framework for this qualitative study is multimodal discourse analysis. visual data was taken from the question sheets from chapters 1 through 6 of the English Work In Progress textbook for the tenth grade Merdeka curriculum. Kress and Van Leeuwen used visual grammar analysis to analyze visual data. The analysis conducted by the research found that every image on the question sheet matched the text provided, either as an instruction or a question. The images were made in a style that is typically used by high school students and were highly detailed. and provide information to help students develop critical and creative thinking. To help students in understanding the questions, the majority of the images are placed below the informative text. According to Kress and Van Leeuwen's theory of visual grammar analysis, in the representational mode the most dominant is the male subject or human image which accounts for 50% of the images in the textbook. In the interactive mode, the most dominant is medium shot and full color saturation with 19% and the last most dominant compositional mode is informative with 39%.]]>

<![CDATA[Media of teaching applied in the classroom gives an effect on the class atmosphere and the writing result. Comic strips can be used as media in teaching learning process of writing. It is a sequence of history that usually contains, almost all the elements: character, plot, dialogues, conflict and climax. It has a story line which has a conclusion or at times a punch. It also can be used to teach writing for all grade students. This paper aims to promote comic strips as media to teach writing and to present the activities using comic strips. The teaching media, Comic strips and the activities of using comic strips as media in teaching writing will be presented. These sorts of activities are adaptable to students of various levels, but within this paper specific levels are targeted. This paper is expected to be useful in order to give a contribution to the development of educational world especially to the process of teaching writing.]]>

<![CDATA[This study investigates the preferences of fifth-semester students at UIN Raden Intan Lampung regarding the use of online translators in academic writing. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from 180 students via a six-item questionnaire focusing on general usage and the impacts on academic writing. The findings indicate that online translators are widely utilized, with the majority of students using them daily or weekly. Google Translate emerged as the most preferred tool due to its ease of use and comprehensive language support. Students primarily use online translators to translate words or phrases, understand foreign texts, and check grammar and sentence structure. The impact on academic writing is generally positive, with many students finding these tools effective in improving their writing quality and efficiency. However, challenges such as over-reliance on translators, misinterpretation of context, and lack of technical vocabulary were also noted]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to analyze the teachers' use of figurative language in their classrooms. Figurative language plays a crucial role in enhancing communication and fostering a conducive learning environment. The objectives of the research were to describe the kinds of figurative language on English Teachers' on teaching process in classroom at eight grade, the meaning of Figurative Language on English Teachers' on Teaching Process in Classroom at Eight grade at SMP N 3 Bandar Lampung. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The research design involved observational methods to capture and analyze instances of figurative language used by teachers. The subject of the research was the teacher and students at eight grade of SMP N 3 Bandar Lampung. Data was collected through direct observation and recording. The analysis found that from eight figurative languages in the classroom, only two types which included in the learning. They consisted of 2 similes and 15 metaphors. Therefore, irony, personification, hyperbole, allusion, metonymy, and symbol were not found in this research. The findings of this study contributed to understanding the impact of figurative language on classroom dynamics and student engagement, offering valuable implications for educational practices]]>

<![CDATA[The parks are significant pillars of the city that fulfill various goals with clear objectives to engage. People can experience nature, engage in physical activity, and relax in parks. The research was based on a case study methodology to examine the reality of the park’s situation in residential neighborhoods through observations, in-person interviews, and a questionnaire. The study was conducted in neighborhoods and community parks within the city of Erbil (Sami Abdulrahman, Shanadar1, Peshmerga, Manar, Runaki, Kanyaw, Shanadar 2, Shanader 3, Gilkand, and Khanzad). The most significant conclusions from the study are: The research area's parks and gardens did not meet the requirements. In addition to lacking the majority of recreational amenities like sports fields and playgrounds, most parks offer areas for resting, strolling, and sitting down. According to the survey's findings, residents of Erbil's residential districts have a significant desire and curiosity to express their opinions in the city's parks. People of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds share this desire. Residents of the area make up the bulk of visitors to these parks and gardens (82%), and afternoons are the best times for them to visit., Additionally, only 8% of respondents think that these parks' playgrounds and exercise equipment satisfy their needs. Additionally, there is a great desire among visitors to add new recreational activities to these parks, such as sitting areas, family picnic areas, gathering areas for the elderly, play areas for kids, reading areas for school children, as well as walking corridors]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to determine the impact of using the Tic Tac Toe game on students' speaking abilities in the second grade at SMK N 7 Bandar Lampung during the academic year 2023/2024. The researcher wants to know how well the second graders at SMK N 7 Bandar Lampung master their language skills, mainly speaking skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of second-grade students from SMK N 7 Bandar Lampung. The total sample size was 64 students drawn from two classes, XI Accounting 1 (experimental class) and XI Accounting 2 (control class), using cluster random sampling. The experimental class played tic-tac-toe, while the control class played role-playing games. The data were gathered using pre-and post-tests. The instrument consisted of oral test instruction for the pre-test and post-test, with topics covering asking and giving opinions. To analyze the data, the independent t-test formula from the SPSS 26 version was used in statistical computations. The t-test results reveal a significant impact of the Tic Tac Toe game on students' speaking ability. The generated Sig. (2-tailed) of equal variances assumed is 0.000, which is less than Ha = 0.05, indicating Ha's acceptance. This suggests that the use of the Tic Tac Toe game can significantly enhance the speaking abilities of second-grade students at SMK N 7 Bandar Lampung. These findings have practical implications for language educators, providing a promising tool to improve students' speaking skills]]>

<![CDATA[Vocabulary is one of the components of mastering English as a foreign language. Before students study English skills, they should learn about vocabulary as the first step. Based on the preliminary research, showed that the students still faced difficulties in learning vocabulary namely not knowing the meaning of words, not knowing how to pronounce words, and the written words and how to pronounce the words are not the same. This research only focused on students' difficulties in learning vocabulary and factors that cause students' difficulties in learning vocabulary. Descriptive qualitative research design was employed in this research. Purposive sampling was used in this research. The eighth grade of E was taken as a sample because they had lower scores in vocabulary than other classes. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect the data. The questionnaire was used to find out students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary and the interview was used to find out the factors that cause students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary. The three major phases of data analysis are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. After analyzing the data, the results of the questionnaire showed that there were three difficulties for students in learning vocabulary. The difficulty faced by the students in learning vocabulary was the pronunciation, grammar, and meaning. Based on the students’ interviews, there are three difficulties factors in learning vocabulary. The difficulty factors faced by the students in learning vocabulary was students reluctant to open dictionaries, students less motivation, and students have difficulty concentrating]]>
