Abstract

The problems of water quality and its management are a global issue that must be resolved. Technology of membrane filtration shows the good potential of water treatment to improve water quality, eliminate harmful contaminants and efficiently restore nutrients. This article aims to give a comprehensive review of membrane filtration, consists of membrane filtration performance to remove contaminants, energy consumption, cost aspects and strategies of antifouling. Technologies in membrane filtration are microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and (reverse osmosis) RO. The results of this study indicate that, MF/UF system can effectively remove bacteria and be used as a pre-treatment before the NF/RO process. NF/RO system can remove contaminants higher than MF/UF. It can remove almost all contaminants, ions, heavy metals, viruses and pharmaceutical compounds (PhAC). However, the system is more susceptible to membrane fouling, but these problems can be solved with adequate pre-treatment. Water treatment with NF and RO offers a good alternative because its operation makes it possible to use lower energy consumption compared to conventional water treatment. Based on the cost aspect, if the virus and ion contamination are not the main target in the filtering and not for consumption, the MF/UF system is sufficient and will be more economical than using NF/RO. The finding of this study can provide insight into the effectiveness of membrane filtration technology in water treatment. Future research can develop membrane filtration technology so that it has good performance, low energy consumption and low cost.

Abstract

Although many studies have discussed the relationship between education and environmental awareness, there are still some research gaps that need attention. For example, there is no comprehensive mapping that illustrates global research trends on environmental awareness in education. The urgency of this research lies in the attempt to address the gaps in academic literature, especially the lack of studies that systematically map global research trends on environmental awareness in education. This study aims to analyse global trends in research on environmental awareness in education based on scientific publications during the period 2015-2025. This study uses a bibliometric approach. Research data is collected from the main database, namely Scopus. There are inclusion and exclusion criteria in this study. Environmental awareness in education is closely related to various aspects, including attitudes, behaviour, and sustainability policies. There are 5 main topics related to environmental awareness, namely Environmental Awareness and Environmental Education, Sustainability and Sustainable Development, Consumer Environmental Awareness and Pro-Environmental Behaviour, Environmental Attitudes and Environmental Performance, Environmental Sustainability in Education. Improving environmental education is very important to prepare future generations who are more concerned about the environment and are ready to face the challenges of sustainability. Recommendations that can be applied in the context of education in Indonesia are the integration of environmental education in the curriculum, an experience-based learning approach, encouraging pro-environmental behaviour in society, collaboration with global institutions and the use of digital technology in environmental education.

Abstract

Concept maps are an effective tool in the learning process, enabling students to organise and structure information into a unified whole. Although there has been much research on concept maps as a learning tool, there is still limited research specifically analysing the structural patterns of concept maps and relating them to students‘ conceptual understanding or abilities. This study aims to analyse students’ abilities in constructing concept maps. This study is a quantitative descriptive study. The sample of this study were 16 students who took the basic science education course. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, namely students who had received basic chemistry material. The concept maps that had been made were then analysed based on the structural pattern used (hierarchical, network, linear, mixed) using an assessment rubric. Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to see the distribution of the pattern of students' concept maps in the form of averages, frequencies, percentages and graphic visualisations for each aspect measured in the concept maps. Based on the results of data analysis in this study, it can be concluded that most students use a hierarchical pattern (38%), followed by a network pattern (31%), a mixed pattern (25%), and a linear pattern (6%). The majority of students (62.5%) had an understanding in the very good category, 6.25% in the good category, and 12.5% in the lacking category. No students were in the very lacking category.

Abstract

The project-based learning (PjBL) model, particularly when combined with HOTS-based interactive LKPD, is an effective method for improving critical thinking skills. This study investigates the problem of insufficient critical thinking abilities among students and assesses the impact of the PjBL model supported by HOTS- based interactive LKPD on these skills. Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design and basic random sampling, this quantitative research employed HOTS-based assessment tools and analysis techniques to evaluate critical thinking through essay questions. The analysis involved N-Gain tests and independent sample t-tests to measure the enhancement in students' critical thinking abilities. The N-Gain results indicated an improvement of 81.14% in the experimental class (deemed effective) compared to 24.50% in the control class (deemed ineffective). The independent sample t-test showed a significance value of <0.001, which is below 0.05, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Therefore, the study concludes that the PjBL model, enhanced by HOTS-based interactive LKPD, significantly improves students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the critical thinking skills of grade 5 students in science lessons before and after the implementation of project-based learning, describe the implementation of project-based science learning in grade 5, and identify the inhibiting and supporting factors in the learning process. The research method used is mixed methods with sequential explanatory design, which is the collection and analysis of quantitative data followed by qualitative data to strengthen the research results. The sample in this study amounted to 60 students divided into a control class of 30 students, and an experimental class of 30 students. The results showed that the average pretest score of the experimental class was 73.70, while the control class was 58.07. After treatment, namely the application of project-based learning in the experimental class, the average value of the experimental class posttest increased significantly to 84.10, while the average value of the control class posttest which was not given special treatment, increased to 67.83. The results showed that the application of project-based science learning had an influence in improving students' critical thinking skills. In addition, the results showed that the inhibiting factors of project-based learning are time constraints, limited resources, such as teaching materials, equipment and facilities, limited teacher knowledge and skills, and student resistance. While the supporting factors are the availability of resources, such as teaching materials, equipment, and facilities, teacher involvement, and collaboration between teachers and students.
